Three books that had an impact on me: Persepolis, Animal Farm and Farenheit 451

These aren’t just any books; they’ve shaped my thoughts, opened my eyes and even changed the way I see the world and made me think about certain subjects. Let’s jump right in!

The complete Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi

I was gifted this from a friend last year, my first graphic novel which completely transformed my reading experience. It’s an autobiographical graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi, recounting her childhood in Iran during and after the Islamic revolution. What struck me the most was the raw honesty with which Satrapi tells her story. Her illustrations are simple yet powerful, capturing the innocence of childhood alongside the harsh realities of political upheaval.

Reading Persepolis felt like stepping into someone else’s shoes, someone whose life was vastly different from mine, yet so relatable in its human experiences. it made me reflect on the privileges I often take for granted and the resilience people show in the face of oppression. Satrapi’s journey from a rebellious child to a thoughtful adult is inspiring and a poignant reminder of the strength and adaptability of the human spirit.

Animal Farm by George Orwell

Animal Farm is one of those books that linger long after you’ve turned the last page. I first read it in high school, but its significance didn’t fully hit me until I revisited it as an adult. On the surface, it’s a simple story about a group of farm animals who overthrow their human farmer, hoping to create a society where they can be equal, free and happy. however, as the pigs gradually assume more power, it becomes clear that they’re no better than the humans they replaced.

Orwell’s sharp critique of totalitarian regimes and the corruption of ideals resonated deeply with me. it’s a powerful reminder of how easily power can corrupt and how vigilance is necessary to maintain justice and equality. The allegorical nature of the story makes it accessible yet profound, encouraging readers to question authority and stay aware of the political dynamics around them.

Fahrenheit 451

Fahrenheit 451 is a more recent addition to my list, and it’s one that has sparked a lot of reflection. Ray Bradbury’s dystopian novel about a future where books are banned and “firemen” burn any that are found is a chilling exploration of censorship, conformity and the power of knowledge.

What hit me the hardest was the portrayal of a society that willingly gives up its freedom for the sake of comfort and ignorance. It’s a stark warning about the dangers of letting entertainment and superficial pleasures overshadow critical thinking and intellectual curiosity. Montag’s journey from a compliant fireman to a seeker of truth is both heart-wrenching and inspiring, making me ponder the value of conflict and the courage it takes to seek and speak the truth.
