    “A Moment in Time” by Carolyn Babjak

    She ran through the terminal, heart pounding, as a flight number was being called.

    “TWA Flight 422, now boarding at Gate 7.”

    “That’s me!” she said out loud. “Please, can I get through? They’re boarding my flight.”

    She spotted her gate straight ahead. “Running late?” the guy in front of her asked over his sunglasses.

    “Yes! Should have known. Sepulveda Boulevard was a nightmare. An old Chevy broke down, and everything got backed up. I didn’t want to miss this flight.”

    “I’m teasing you! I should mind my own business.” He bowed his head with a sheepish smile. His hair was messy, and he was in dungarees and sunglasses — not dressed up at all.

    “Oh…that’s okay. I’m rambling.”

    She found her seat just as he slid into the window beside her.

    “Funny, we’re right next to each other. How about that?” She smiled, and he cleared his throat.

    “Yes, miss, that is funny.”

    He sat back, pulling out a paperback book. He swapped his sunglasses for regular glasses. As they rolled down the runway, she thought he looked so scholarly.

    Colleen closed her eyes for a moment. The last few days had been hectic. Letting her mind wander with the hum of the engines, she began reviewing the phone call. Her father’s voice was filled with worry.

    “You gotta git home, Colleen honey. Your mama is sick — in bad shape, they’re telling me. You need money? I can wire some.”

    Colleen knew someday this could happen.

    Deep inside, she wondered if she would ever be able to go back to Los Angeles. She pushed that thought to the back burner for now.

    “Excuse me, miss?” The guy tapped her arm lightly.

    “I didn’t want to startle you. But…but I thought you should know they’re almost here with our food.”

    She wiped the drool from her lips, hoping he wouldn’t notice, as the trays came down the aisle.

    “Guess I fell asleep. I’m Colleen, by the way.” She stuck out her hand to him. “We should know each other’s names!”

    He blushed, removed his glasses. “I’m Jimmy.”

    His hand was warm and soft. Averting his eyes, he sat up straight in his seat.

    “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Colleen.”

    The stewardess served the trays, and they quietly ate.

    Colleen couldn’t stand not talking. “Are you visiting or on business? Unless I’m being nosey.”

    “Well, I’m from there and going to visit my family. I work in LA.” He picked at the food on his tray.

    “Oh, funny me too!” Colleen was eating with vigor. “What are you reading, Jimmy?”

    “Oh yes. I love to disappear into a book. They take you to another place. How about you? Do you like to read?”

    “I knew it. You must be a scholar or something. With those glasses, you look so smart. I do like to read. My mom… she instilled a love of reading because she always said there was something to learn in every book.”

    “Oh, I’m no scholar. That’s for sure.” He ran his fingers through his hair. “Just a guy from Indiana.”

    They were quiet for a while. Jimmy went back to his book. Colleen closed her eyes again. The drone of the engines made her so drowsy, she couldn’t keep her eyes open. But she heard him say,

    “Hey, by the way. ‘Of Mice and Men.’”

    Colleen rubbed her eyes. “What? Sorry, Jimmy, I was dozing again. The sound of the engines always puts me to sleep. Kinda relaxing, I guess.”

    “You asked what I’m reading — ‘Of Mice and Men.’”  He turned the cover toward her, pointing to Steinbeck’s name.

    “Oh, yes. I read that one. It’s a good one. Sad though.”

    “Yes. It’s filled with sadness but strength.”

    “Steinbeck is good for that. I loved The Grapes of Wrath. Who knew about people like that in America?” Colleen shifted in her seat to face him.

    “I’m trying to read all the famous American authors. The ones that talk about how things are, or could be. Human stuff. Ya know?” Jimmy looked to Colleen earnestly, wanting her to understand. “My dad doesn’t get why I like this stuff. He likes detective stories.”

    “Well,” Colleen added. “Detective stories can be fun, but I like different things. My mom loved mysteries — Agatha Christie.”

    “You okay? You said loved. Does that mean…?” Jimmy leaned in, lightly touching her arm.

    “My mom is sick. That’s why I’m going home. My dad called me. She’s in the hospital. So…I guess I’m worried.” Colleen’s voice quivered.

    “Oh, man. That’s so hard. Especially since you want to get there quickly.” Jimmy kept quiet for a few minutes.

    “I’m praying she’ll be fine.”

    “Yes, she will….she’ll read Miss Christie’s newest book sooner than you think!”

    Colleen reclined back in her seat.

    Jimmy turned his attention back to Steinbeck.

    Colleen handed off both trays to the young woman, grateful for the distraction. If she started to cry, she might not stop — not in front of Jimmy, not in front of all these people.

    “My mom was very sick when I was young. I didn’t understand. Not sure I understand now. It’s so hard. You love them so much.” Jimmy’s book rested in his lap.

    “You got that right, Jimmy. She means so much to me. I didn’t realize it until my dad said she was sick and in the hospital. How is your mom now?”

    Jimmy looked down. She could see him swallowing, holding back.

    “Jimmy? I’m sorry.” Colleen whispered.

    “She died when I was nine. But that doesn’t mean that will happen to you. It was a long time ago. I don’t talk about it much. It’s too sad. She was just twenty-nine.”

    Colleen’s breath caught. “Oh, Jimmy. I’m so sorry. I bet she was beautiful inside and out. You miss her— I can see that.”

    The speaker crackled overhead, startling them both. The captain announced they’d be landing in twenty minutes.

    “Colleen, it was so nice talking to you. And, I hope your mom is okay.” Jimmy smiled as he buckled his seatbelt.

    “Yes, Jimmy. It was a nice flight with you. Enjoy your visit.”

    The plane touched down, and soon the passengers departed, going their separate ways. Colleen lost sight of Jimmy as he rushed through the terminal.

    ~~~
    “Mom, here’s the morning paper. The boy just delivered it.”
    Colleen’s mother sat in her favorite chair. The doctor sent her home with strict orders to take it easy after her heart attack. Since it was minor, they felt she would make a full recovery. Taking it slow, she’d get her strength back soon.
    Colleen glanced at the front page.
    “Oh, my dear Lord!” She gasped, hand to her mouth. “Jimmy.”
    “What? What, Colleen?” her mother asked.
    “I know this guy. James Dean… I didn’t know he was famous. I sat next to him on the plane here. Mom, he was so nice. A really sweet guy. I guess he was a famous actor or something.”
    “Oh, my word. What a coincidence. It is a small world,” She let out a relieved breath.
    Colleen sat on the couch reading the article about James Dean. Colleen whispered, “He loved Steinbeck.”
    If you know anything about Tommy Wiseau you know that his "You are tearing me apart, Lisa" line in The Room was directly inspired by the 1955 Nicholas Ray film Rebel Without a Cause starring James Dean. In which Dean actually pulls this line off.
