The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Daily writing prompt What’s a movie or book that inspired you to travel? View all responses“The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” is a book and a movie. I’ve never read the book, but I saw the movie with my family right before Christmas, 2013. Some movies inspire me, while others change my life. This movie changed my life!
I connected right away to Walter Mitty, a mild-mannered office worker who has never done anything noteworthy or mentionable. Yet, he daydreams of traveling to exotic places and doing heroic things. A missing photo thrusts him out of his comfort zone to travel across the globe, where he experiences the courage and beauty of living in the moment. He works for LIFE magazine and unexpectedly fulfills the magazine’s motto: “To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls, draw closer, to find each other, and to feel…that is the purpose of LIFE.” The uplifting music and cinematography were also amazing!
Before seeing this movie, I had never traveled internationally. In fact, the times that I traveled outside of my state were mainly to visit the beach, approximately 350 miles away. Since seeing this movie, I have traveled to South Africa, Ireland, and Italy. To be fair, the movie was not the only inspiration. My daughters started traveling the world in their teen years as missionaries. They inspired us to come visit them halfway around the world in South Africa. Now, my husband and I travel to new places in the US as well. We are planning to travel somewhere we’ve never been next June for our 40th wedding anniversary. If I could give you advice, I’d say, “Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and experience something new. It’s worth it!”

Pack up the car
Daily writing prompt What’s a movie or book that inspired you to travel? View all responsesNone really. I’m not much of a traveler so no book or movie has inspired me to travel. In fact, the first movie I thought of this morning inspired me not to travel and that’s The Wizard of Oz. When Dorothy wakes up in her bed and tells us if she ever goes looking for her heart’s desire again she won’t look any further than her own back yard because if it’s not there, it was never lost to begin with, it made sense to me. Stay home, stay safe. Kind of a sheltered existence, but it works. About the best a book has ever done for me is inspire me to want to travel. Travels With Charley, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. On the Road. I suppose The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and the Hobbit books might have to be somewhere on that list too. Maybe, in a way, metaphorically?, the Book of Exodus? If I think about it more I’m guessing more titles will come to mind so I’ll stop thinking about it now.

I Wasn’t Inspired by a Movie or a Book. I Just Decided to Go.
“I didn’t travel because someone inspired me. I traveled because one day, I decided my world could be bigger than my comfort zone.” 🌍💖Whenever people ask me what inspired me to travel, they often expect me to mention a famous movie or a bestselling book.
Maybe Eat, Pray, Love. Maybe The Alchemist. Maybe a travel documentary that changed my perspective.
But my answer is always the same.
None.
No movie convinced me to pack my bags. No book whispered that I should chase sunsets in foreign lands.
One ordinary day, I simply woke up and said to myself, “I’m going to travel the world.”
It wasn’t a carefully crafted plan. I didn’t have a bucket list. I wasn’t trying to escape my life. I just wanted to experience it more fully.
Looking back, that quiet decision became one of the most important choices I’ve ever made.
Travel has introduced me to places I had only seen on maps, but more importantly, it has introduced me to versions of myself I never knew existed.
So I’ll keep walking.
One country at a time.
One lesson at a time.
One beautiful story at a time.
Because I wasn’t inspired by someone else’s adventure.
I decided to create my own.I’ve learned that getting lost isn’t always a bad thing. Sometimes it leads you to the best café hidden in a quiet alley. Sometimes it leads you to a conversation with a stranger who leaves a lasting impression. Sometimes it simply reminds you that the world is full of people living lives completely different from yours, yet hoping for many of the same things.
Travel has taught me patience when flights were delayed, gratitude when kindness appeared unexpectedly, courage when I found myself alone in unfamiliar places, and humility when I realized how much there still is to learn.
People often think traveling is about collecting passport stamps.
For me, it’s about collecting stories.
Every city has given me a lesson. Every journey has left a memory. Every return home has made me appreciate both the places I’ve visited and the life I’ve built.
The beautiful part is that my story is still being written.
There are still countries I dream of visiting, cultures I long to understand, foods I’ve never tasted, and roads I’ve never walked. Each trip adds another chapter to a life that became richer the moment I chose curiosity over comfort.
I wasn’t inspired by someone else’s story.
I simply decided it was time to create my own.
And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this:
Sometimes the greatest adventure doesn’t begin with a movie, a book, or a perfect plan. Sometimes it begins with one quiet decision to say “yes” to the world.
The world is too beautiful to remain a stranger. So while I can, I’ll keep exploring… one journey, one story, and one unforgettable moment at a time.

I’d Visit the Shire Tomorrow. Mordor Can Keep Its Property Values.
What’s a movie or book that inspired you to travel? When people ask what movie made me want to travel, the answer is easy. It’s The Lord of the Rings. Not because I want to dodge Orcs, get stabbed by Ringwraiths, or

Neither a Movie nor a book
Daily writing promptWhat’s a movie or book that inspired you to travel?View all responses I love to travel but I hardly travel. My purpose for travel entwines with work. I live in the present. I don't miss the sunrise and sunset in this dusty city of Delhi. I keep chuckling to myself thinking of the mountainous heap of waste dump. At first I thought it was a hill but one day I saw a truck full of waste going uphill. People know how dirty the hill is but they are not bothered about its […]
