An undergraduate student here at #LincolnUniversityNZ, Shuizetinglan, was interested in exploring tide pools so we suggested he visit Inainatu/Pile Bay in Lyttelton Harbour. It has an extensive rocky platform that's exposed at low tide where various intertidal creatures can be found.
Shuizetinglan visited there on the weekend and found several interesting things, like the 5th observation on #iNaturalist from Banks Peninsula of a dwarf brittle seastar, the 1st observation on iNaturalist from Banks Peninsula of a Jewel Anemone, and this, the 1st observation on iNaturalist from Banks Peninsula of a sea spider.
When it comes to local intertidal biodiversity, there's a lot still to document.

When I first saw this prawn (Palaemon sp.) in the rockpools last year, I though I’d stumbled on a new species! But alas no. This poor chap is infected with a fungus Inodosporus octosporus, which has caused his insides to turn a milky white. The common name of this infection is, in fact, milk disease!

The velvet swimming crab aka devils crab (Necora puber) has a bit of a rep. I don’t think the devil bit in the name helps! Admittedly, they do seem a little aggressive when you come across them! I’m always impressed with their ‘I’m bigger than you!’ attitude 😍

A common brittlestar (Ophiothrix fragile). Unlike starfish, a brittlestar’s arms don’t have organs in them, and are primarily used for locomotion. To be a total hypocrite, I wouldn’t recommend handling brittlestars as their arms break very easily. These were held briefly for identification and a video for my records and then gently placed back.

Starfish can regenerate their arms, like this one is doing. And it’s not just the odd arm here and there, oh no! It is thought that they can pretty much regenerate a whole body, just as long as the central disc is intact! This is no mean feat, considering that starfish’s arms contain a water vascular system for moving hundreds of tube feet, their reproductive organs, their digestive system, and their eyes!!

Some nature finds from my beach clean this morning. Clockwise from top left - common whelk (Buccinum undatum) eggs; hydroid Amphisbetia operculata (edited) with worm tubes and a itty bitty sea squirt living on it; the smallest razor clam shell I’ve ever seen; bryozoan Electra pilosa growing on plastic rubbish. Everything was left on the beach, apart from the plastic.
