I struggle to give any credibility to a #linkedin article that uses the bizarre American spelling of "impostor". To me it's just a red line spelling error.

You know that #impostor syndrome that happens when you stray to the edge of your comfort zone?
When your confidence crumbles and you question: can I really have anything to contribute here?
Fortunately, as a middle-aged white English-speaking privately-educated European cishet man who is nearly 2 metres tall I don’t get that.

I think about this a lot. I’ve been making my living in #bioinformatics for almost twenty years (!) with a #PhD for ten: if I’m not “good at it” by now, I’m doing something seriously wrong. But #impostor #syndrome never stops whispering in the back of my head. Probably that’s true of most competent people in most fields.
The problem is that while self-doubt may be necessary for competence, it’s not sufficient. So you never really know.

Today in #Impostor Syndrome: I've spent much of the weekend trying to stand up a self-hosted #Bitwarden instance on a slightly old Mac (running Big Sur,) which requires a way to run Docker-compatible containers.
I’ve been running Macs for 30+ years. I work with containers at $DAYJOB. Can’t get any of the recommended means of doing this on a Mac working.
May need to resort to Rocky on VMWare Fusion as the host… Troubleshooting via podman or colima is a bitch. -

Especially when I remember the that a scheduling conflict in high school led to me picking computer science and physics over biology and computer science.

Situation: I'm working on a proposal where, from a 10kft view, one of the things I want to address and improve on is (e.g.) "reusable components" or "better abstractions" for some class of functionality in a software system where there already exist a handful of commonly-used options. As a result, I'm reviewing recent related work (presentations, papers, tutorial materials), and the developers of those materials claim that their option embodies those features (e.g. "reusable and good abstractions").
I'm having a hard time reconciling my intuitive understanding of perceived inefficiencies with the authors' claims, and I'm skeptical of both 1) dismissing their claims on the basis of my intuition being somehow more valid and 2) dismissing my intuition on account of being naive and less experienced than the authors.
...Ok, having written this out I'm feeling like the actual problem is that I haven't defined my problem well enough. But since we're here I'll at least ask, is there a name for this kind of thought pattern? #phd #impostor #gradstudent
