RE: https://mastodon.social/@jcoglan/116334229654969479
To every programmer with impostor syndrome:
If you ever had thoughts like the following—especially in your more junior years:
"Man, I work at this unknown small-town shop. I would be so much more respected and make a hell of a lot more money, if only I could work at a Silicon Valley company."
Or, after browsing LinkedIn, learning that your idiotic/arrogant former classmate with whom you graduated, landed a job at one of the big Silicon Valley companies and you wonder how he did that because you work at a company in the middle of nowhere …
—the leaking of the source code of Claude Code should give you a huge boost of confidence.
These people working at Anthropic and the likes are SUCH BAD CODERS. They literally don't know how anything works. You and every colleague you ever liked is much better at programming than these idiots working at the big-name company.
Working at a small-town shop on something ethical gets you much more respect from the people that count, than working at the big-name companies. As proven by the increasing calls to auto-ban from open-source projects everyone employed at certain companies.

@Mepurfield I have written 2.5 novels, I care for my disabled spouse and father, and I go out every day to grease the wheels of capitalism with my own blood, sweat, and tears, and I still feel like a lumpo who doesn't contribute to society. I totally get this feeling. #impostorsyndrome

@retroadventurers.bsky.social I had a lot of fun coming up with this conceit, playing the OLDEST and the YOUNGEST editions of #Zork 1 to come from the MIT/#Infocom core teams. This is a slightly short episode (as playing the same game twice is a bit cheeky given our format), but both these versions of the game are a must-see for completists in the genre.
I mention in passing that I always had a bit of #ImpostorSyndrome around Zork, as I have held the domain `zork.net` since the mid/late 90s. I always felt like I was simultaneously dodging #Activision's lawyers and feeling awkward around the die-hard fans who played until they got every last point. Now that #Microsoft has released everything under an open licence, I should probably put a free build up on my site in #Parchment to celebrate!
The Zork-285 game is interesting in that it did not call itself "Zork"! You'll have to listen to the latest #RetroAdventurers episode to find out what it says. #InteractiveFiction

Thank you for this!!! This is the kind of thing I really appreciate learning, and helps me feel like I've actually learned something, rather than just learning how to do something with something.
I think the latter is the cause of a lot of a lot of #ImpostorSyndrome in the tech community, for people are lacking the kind of deeper theoretical basis for their craft.

A reflection on a post Ph.D. mindset.
Looking back, it took me at least 3 years, if not 6 years for my #ImpostorSyndrome to fade away. Tonight I was reading my own #PhD thesis (dated 2019) and I was thoroughly impressed by the depth and the quality of the writing.
On the other hand, I clearly recall during the months closest to my PhD defense, where I was nearly convinced that what I had done was a "piece of cake" that any grad student could have done themselves. How I was wrong.
To all PhD students out there, don't let the impostor in you to discourage you. Give yourself a pat in the back and believe in your peers and friends when they say you have done well! 🥇

Ooof, that is very frustrating.
Long before the current trend of AI crap, I was already frustrated by the heavily example-based and "google how to do X" method of #pedagogy in the technical world.
I honestly think it was the cause of so much #ImpostorSyndrome: learning things piecemeal and reactively, rather than foundationally and methodically.

Better Company Than Caesar
What is this urge that makes us want to be seen as something we aren’t. Take this blog, for example. I am in no way a writer. Barely even a proper blogger. My professional life has very little of this kind of writing. Scientific and investor communication, sure; but not this. Why do I have — and always have had — this urge to be, and be seen, as creative? Is this some kind of performative, effortless polymathism?
Orangutan (Orangoetan) (1914) print in high resolution by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita.Perhaps the desire is to be a modern Renaissance man. In of Montaigne’s essays is the following passage:
“They would rather talk at length about other people’s trade, instead of their own, and so hope to be seen as accomplished in yet another field. Like when Archidamus faulted Periander for abandoning his reputation as a good doctor to acquire one as a bad poet.
See how Caesar goes out of his way to make us understand his ingenuity in building bridges and siege weapons. And, conversely, how much he refrains from talking about the responsibilities of his profession, his courage, and how he led his troops. His deeds prove he was an excellent officer. He wants to be known as an excellent engineer, an entirely different occupation!
Dionysus the Elder was a great military leader, as fortune would have him. But he did everything he could to be known mainly through poetry, although he knew little of it.”
Montaigne, if not a “Renaissance man”, is a man of the Renaissance. Yet he quotes even older examples of this urge. We have leaders who are CEOs or investors and want to be known or seen as being accomplished engineers or physicists. Fields they are rather bad at. Perhaps there is a common kind of mania here. Maybe it takes hold in the minds of the mover and shakers of history. But what of us not of a geologic character?
I don’t think this applies to us regular folks. Hobbies and deep interests do provide something critical however. Happiness. I don’t really care much about being seen as an expert in writing, making pretty plots, or even performing some AI-for-biology contortion. I would like to know how to do it and how to do it well. I am led by the pleasures of intense curiosity. That is better company than Caesar, I assure you.
Maria Popova writes in one of her wonderful essays on Bertrand Russell:
‘In my darkest hours, what has saved me again and again is some action of unselfing — some instinctive wakefulness to an aspect of the world other than myself: a helping hand extended to someone else’s struggle, the dazzling galaxy just discovered millions of lightyears away, the cardinal trembling in the tree outside my window. We know this by its mirror-image — to contact happiness of any kind is “to be dissolved into something complete and great,” something beyond the bruising boundaries of the ego.’
By the end of 2023, I was in proper burnout.*1 It wasn’t until I was able to focus my mind on reading new things that recovery felt possible. Earlier this year I joined the Contraptions book club and that complete focusing of attention has buoyed my mental state even higher. Enough to write regularly and to be ever more creative at my day job.
So, I guess, the Nobel-winning philosopher and mathematician did know a thing or two when he decided to write a book with the title in The Conquest of Happiness.
“The secret of happiness is this: let your interests be as wide as possible, and let your reactions to the things and persons that interest you be as far as possible friendly rather than hostile.”- Sidenote: I suspect Montaigne, who was about my age when he started to write also went through a midlife crisis. This sidenote is somewhere between projection and basking in reflected glory. ↩︎

For the longest time I rejected having impostor syndrome. But during holidays I recognize it.
The thoughts rise up from the little things. For example, as I watch my Mastodon instance that has almost 1000 users or look at other achievements I've made, I ask myself: what if that sucks, how can this be good, why do they like this, what the...?
It's impossible for my brain to understand that I can succeed and do great things. I wonder why that is... those years in therapy were clearly not enough. I'm still on a journey.

I want to get back to coding, but when I'm about to, something gets in the way and I end up procrastinating around it. Or doing something else. Every goddamn time. Needless to say, I feel bad about it afterwards (read : all the time).
But from Friday, I'll be freed from most of the usual excuses for five straight weeks. I'm hoping to break the vicious cycle this time, and hopefully get back to being productive, somehow. At last.

Fortunate to be in Udupi, occupying the same areas as some of the best scholars in logic, philosophy, language, literature, scriptures, and such. Just today, I sat in on a hour-long lecture by a "shataavadhani" (someone who can do 100 concurrent tasks) and had 30-minute one-one with the Swamiji of one of the original eight Udupi mathas (~monasteries).
This on top of interacting with the two paryaaya Swamijis (those now responsible for the Krishna temple) and getting a closeup viewing of Krishna. Not to mention eating heavenly food.
I mean, I'd feel blessed to experience any one of those for a few minutes of my entire life, but I'm experiencing it all day, every day. It all feels like a dream, one I fear I'll wake from and realize none of this is real. 😰
Needles to say, heavy impostor syndrome. 😳

So last night I was cutting a live music show with 8 cameras. This is not my usual gig, but something I had done a few times in the past with fewer cameras. It was pretty stressful and I thought I did a barely adequate job given my experience level. At least nothing went horribly wrong.
At the end, my client tells me it's the best they’ve ever seen for their event. /shrug
