  3. You'd think that working with some ..... "not very-competent people" ..... on a cross company project would help my imposter syndrome, but on the contrary..... it kicks it into overdrive.

If they can get jobs like this, I might not actually be better either, seeing as I'm only in this job.

On the plus side, it kicks up my paranoia against making mistakes like they do, so I've increased my tests usage tremendously to try and be sure I don't mess up.

Client is (very) happy with me though, and not them, so that helps a bit I guess. :D

  6. @fediforum

I’ve been to every #FediForum since the first one and I’ve loved every one of them.

At first I had #ImposterSyndrome, but everyone was so welcoming, that feeling soon passed once the conversations started to flow and I learned so much.

At #FediForum I first saw @_elena’s brilliant video about the #Fediverse and I’ve met such interesting people who I look forward to seeing again at this #FediForum.

Huge thanks to all the organisers, especially @j12t for creating the #FediForum 👏👏👏

  13. Life as a Contracted Author: Imposter Syndrome is REAL

    Hey, everyone!

Between all the book tours and guest posts and whatnot lately, I haven’t actually written all that many of the posts for the blog, and I realized I’ve taken very few opportunities to talk about life lately, especially since I was contracted with Ashberry Lane Publishing.

So… here I am, and here we go!

It’s been about two and a half months since I signed with the Ashberry Lane imprint of WhiteFire Publishing, and many thoughts have flown in and out in the time since. So… here are some things I’ve been realizing.

    It still doesn’t feel real.

Every once in a while, I sit back and say out loud, “I got a three-book contract with a Christian publisher,” and experience the feels all over again, because honestly… I’m kind of still in denial?

Yes, I signed the contract. Yes, I have the document with ALL the deadlines for all three books. Yes, I am in the process of writing book 2. Yes, I have a form half-filled-out for the cover designer.

And yes, I still haven’t fully embraced the fact that I’m going to hold a book with my name on it in my hands in a little over a year.

I don’t know when it will feel real. I hear imposter syndrome never really goes away… and I can see why. I always thought that getting a contract with a publisher would be the thing. Y’know? This has been my dream for so long, and I’ve worked toward it tirelessly, writing book after book, blog post after blog post, and Instagram carousels and reels. And it HAPPENED! But I feel like some little fake author wearing the label when it’s not really true.

    It’s a very strange complex.

Deadlines are simultaneously exciting and terrifying.

It’s very strange going from writing whenever I want to, setting my own deadlines, and just living my life to having actual deadlines by which my book needs to be semi-coherent. The weirdest thing is that I can already kind of map out when I need to be doing what… for the next couple years.

This year, the goal is to get Book 2 written in time for my editorial letter to come back for Book 1. Then I’ll do revisions for book 1, and hopefully afterward have time to edit Book 2 and *maybe* get beta reader feedback and make more changes before my June deadline arrives. The line edit for Book 1 falls in that span, too, though.

Next summer, I’ll write Book 3, and then in the fall of my senior year of college, Book 1 will release (yes, all three books will be written before the first releases). Book 2 will release my first year as a teacher and I’ll be editing while navigating the craziness of teaching, so that will be… probably a bit stressful. Book 3 will release in the fall of my second year teaching… and then I’ll be done and free to start something completely different.

It’s kind of crazy to think about.

The nice thing is that I only need to worry about one deadline at a time.

I have so much to learn.

Honestly, the scariest thing about all of it is how much is unknown still. I hope that, once I’ve gone through the editing process with Shadows Over Broad Street, I’ll have a better idea of what to expect for the rest of the books. But until then… I have so many questions. I don’t really know what an editorial letter will be like. I don’t know how long edits will take me. I don’t even know what I want my book’s cover to look like, which is honestly insane given how long I’ve been dreaming of this.

How do book releases work? How hard is it to arrange a book signing at a local bookstore or library? Who should I ask to endorse my book?

There are just so many things I don’t know or understand yet. And I know, with time, I’ll get there… but it’s just a little nervewracking in the meantime.

Writing a sequel is a daunting task.

I’ve written sequels before for unpublished books. It’s a little bit different when I have a deadline and an ISBN and a release date for said book that is still only half-baked.

In my head, I’ve hyped Shadows Over Broad Street up so much. It’s the best thing I’ve ever written, clearly: it got me a publishing deal. I love the characters. I love the story. It’s so beautiful. It’s my baby.

And honestly, it feels like a bar I can’t measure up to with Book 2.

The problem is… the first draft of Book 2 couldn’t possibly be as good as Book 1 that has been combed over by me, my mom, and a team of 15 beta readers.

And yet, still I find myself comparing the two. Which results in me feeling like a total failure of a writer and wondering why I ever wanted to write a whole trilogy instead of just signing Shadows Over Broad Street as a standalone.

In reality, I think Book 2 will be great… once I’ve given it time to fully develop. Right now, it’s a mess, and that’s how it should be. Creating a good story and deep characters takes time and effort, and it can’t be accomplished in a single draft. So I trust the process and pray God will give me the confidence I need to get the story on paper.

    There’s a lot that doesn’t change.

I thought things would feel remarkably different, but really… they don’t.

I still second-guess whether I have any idea what I’m doing.

I still feel like my first draft is a total disaster.

I still have to lean on God for inspiration and determination.

I’m still just a girl trying to figure this out.

And that’s perfect, because heaven knows the last thing I need is to become arrogant. Writing definitely keeps me humble.

    In Conclusion…

Signing a contract doesn’t magically change everything. You’re still going to feel like you have no clue what you’re doing. You’re still going to struggle. But it’s still such an exciting step, and I can’t wait to hold my books in my hands!

Did any of these thoughts surprise you? Have you experienced imposter syndrome? What scares you the most about the prospect of publication?

  15. For those who've seen at least season 2 of Good Omens, sometimes I worry that I'm like Muriel. Enthusiastic and supremely well-intentioned, but so utterly clueless I'm blissfully unaware of just how clueless I am. So far out of my depth that I'm unable to comprehend, even if someone explained slowly, with diagrams, just how far out of it I am.

Also, if anything goes wrong or someone is unhappy, I seem to assume that's my fault until proven otherwise.

  16. Imposter!

Daily writing prompt Do you think we’re shaped more by our experiences or by who we are? View all responses

Do be honest, I don’t really think about that at all. It’s not that I don’t care, but what’s the point? I was just going to type “When I was younger…” and an image of an old skin and bones guy with a scraggly white beard wearing a red flannel shirt and suspenders sitting in a rocking chair with a gaggle of children sitting in a semi-circle in front of him popped into my mind. And while looking down at those children he leans forward, and with one hand on his knee and the other waving his pipe around in the air he says, “Why when I was your age children…”

When I was going to school the prompt question was phrased as nature vs. nurture and I can say I didn’t care much about back then either.

Why when I was your age children I didn’t care much about anything.

Unless you’re a psychologist, or a behavioral psychologist or whatever, why does it matter?

Now on to the important stuff. Today Rojie asks: Write about a time when you felt like you had imposter syndrome. Well, to continue being honest, I don’t really know. I frequently have bouts of self-doubt and I can often see successes in life as luck or just having been in the right place at the right time. That’s how I frequently think about my writing and I haven’t really thought about it, but it’s probably the reason I write stuff and file it away and never submit anything for publication. I dismiss any compliments I might receive as the person offering them just trying to be kind. If grade school was good for anything, it was honesty. Because while getting picked last in gym class for whatever unpleasant thing we might have had to do that day was painful, it was at least honest. No false sincerity there, no jock pranks there, just what I knew to be true there. So this, blogging – yesterday, tomorrow, right now – would be one of those times I feel like I had imposter syndrome.

I just watched the movie Us the other day which was all about imposters. It was a good movie for what it was, but I hated the ending. Endings like that can ruin the entire movie for me and I think the only reason they’re done is to generate buzz. I’m wondering now if it’s not done because of a sense of imposter syndrome by the writer or director? Maybe they don’t think the movie is good enough as it stands so they add something to get people talking? In this case the ending really contradicted the plot of the movie so it brought the whole movie into question.

  17. Remedy to Imposter Syndrome

The feedback loop from self-doubt to action has oddly given me more confidence. It allows me to build the muscle of execution, which bleeds into all of the other skills I have.

  18. * Prepare a lecture on a topic you are familiar with, but not a specialist in.
    * Suddenly realise the way you are formulating it is different from the way the textbook formulate it.
    * Start doubting yourself and double-check on three other books.
    * Find that all books you can find approach the problem in exactly the same way, and this way is seemingly incompatible with how you understand the problem.
    * Imposter syndrome kicks in. Clearly your understanding is flawed at a fundamental level and you are not qualified to teach this.
    * Spend 3 days frantically reading everything you can find on the topic, hoping to learn where you went wrong.
    * Finally realise that the whole thing boils down to a minor nomenclature issue. What you were doing is 100% correct. You just need to add a small qualifier to the name of a quantity to avoid confusion.
    * Imposter syndrome subdue. For a short while you can relax. Until next time.
