"Forestry Corporation condemned after Greater Glider ‘den trees' found at planned logging site.

ExMP Debus calls on the government to halt imminent logging in a forest on the state's south coast, after citizen scientists recorded 102 trees that they say are home to endangered #GreaterGlider. They also accuse the NSW Forestry Corporation (#NSWFC) of being found in breach of its own regulations so frequently that the "practice is essentially part of its business model".

  6. Habitat destruction (Habitat 🌄)

Habitat destruction occurs when a natural habitat is no longer able to support its native species. The organisms once living there have either moved elsewhere, or are dead, leading to a decrease in biodiversity and species numbers. Habitat destruction is in fact the leading cause of biodiversity loss and species extinc...

  7. Will the 'koala tourist park' save the endangered species?

"Habitat loss and fragmentation is the number one threat to koalas. Others include climate change, bushfires, disease, vehicle strikes and dog attacks."

"The NSW government says logging must immediately cease in areas to be brought into the park’s boundary. However, logging pressures can remain, even after national parks are declared. Forestry activities must cease completely, and forever, if the park is to truly protect koalas."

"What’s more, recreational activities, if allowed in the national park, may negatively impact koalas. For example, cutting tracks or building tourist facilities may fragment koala habitat and disturb shy wildlife."

  10. Translocation experiment: Deaths of seven out of 13 koalas
More than half of koalas relocated to NSW forest died in failed government attempt at reintroduction

"Translocation and deaths of seven out of 13 koalas in April, with some showing signs of septicaemia, not made public by state government. An attempt by the New South Wales government to reintroduce koalas to a forest in the state’s far south has failed after more than half of the moved animals died, including two with signs of septicaemia, and the remaining marsupials were taken into care."

  11. On my way back from physio yesterday, I saw that this stretch of habitat along Shirley Avenue is now poisoned with pesticide. Waterloo is theoretically a bee city. Apparently, Kitchener is not. I hate that so much habitat destruction keeps happening. Last year, there were trees in this spot. They were removed all the way down to that walking trail this spring. This is an area where I used to go foraging. Now it's been intentionally poisoned.

This is part of the Haldimand Tract and is close to the Grand River, territory of the Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee. This flouts our treaties with them. beecitycanada.org/bee-cities/w @waterlooregion #HabitatDestruction #ecology #pollinators #LandBack #ProtectTheTract #pesticides

  12. @waterlooregion another area which was deforested within the past couple of years. This was old-growth forest which was home to lots of birds and mammals. It used to buffer a residential section from a gas plant. The wood wasn't even used for anything. All those huge trees were put through wood chippers. Now the area is super dusty and hotter than ever without the shade. #Deforestation #HabitatDestruction #LandBack #HaldimandTract #SaveTheTract

  13. Both of these areas were heavily treed until within the past month or so. Why is Kitchener condoning all this deforestation? Have the Haudenosaunee been consulted? This is all on the Haldimand Tract and is Indigenous treaty territory. #LandBack #Deforestation #HaldimandTract #SaveTheTract @waterlooregion #HabitatDestruction

  14. Quiet extinctions of invertebrates are largely unnoticed and unmourned

‘This is the way the world ends; not with a bang but a whimper’ TS Eliot, The Hollow Men

"Australian species have become extinct over this 236-year period...We predict that 39–148 species will become extinct in 2024. This is inconsistent with a recent pledge by the Australian government to prevent all extinction...Unless there is a major increase in investment and change in conservation priorities, and more effective control of threats, this rate of extinction will increase. We should not simply maintain the current conservation status quo and let these extinctions happen."

"So long as invertebrate extinctions remain nameless and invisible, this failure cannot be demonstrated, or readily overcome; and efforts will instead be directed towards the less imperilled, but better-known and iconic species."
