  1. Only the 2nd or 3rd time this has happened:
Somebody took my elevator, figured out they took it from me, and apologized before the doors closed!
This time, they were looking back and forth, at the "L" sign meaning "lobby" and then at me, who had gotten off on *their* floor when they got on. I finally said "I won't share" and they said "Oh, sorry" as the door closed.

  2. Understanding the Common Cold: Why Fighting Off Illness Leaves Us Feeling Poorly

At the heart of the body’s reaction to a cold is the immune response. When a virus, such as a rhinovirus, enters our system, our immune system springs into action. White blood cells, including macrophages and lymphocytes, recognize these invaders and initiate a complex defense process. They release signaling molecules known as cytokines, which play a crucial role in communication between cells during the immune response.

The release of cytokines triggers inflammation, particularly in the respiratory tract. This inflammation results in symptoms like a sore throat, nasal congestion, and a persistent cough. Blood vessels become more permeable, allowing immune cells to reach the site of infection. While this response is vital for combating the virus, it often leads to the discomfort and malaise we associate with colds.

The release of cytokines triggers inflammation, particularly in the respiratory tract.

Additionally, the body demands more energy to mount a defense against the infection. This redirection of metabolic resources can leave individuals feeling weak and fatigued. Altered levels of neurotransmitters in the brain during this immune response can also contribute to feelings of lethargy and, at times, even mild depression.

The combination of mucus production, coughing, and general discomfort from inflammation results in symptoms like headaches and muscle aches. While these signs are indicative of the body’s work to eliminate the virus, they can make recovering from a cold a challenging experience.

In summary, the discomfort experienced during a cold is a direct result of the body’s immune response and the inflammatory processes it triggers. Understanding these mechanisms not only demystifies the experience but also highlights the importance of allowing our bodies the time and care they need to recover.

  4. Some kind of infection seems to be tearing through the population in my general area. It's a sinus thing that comes with a very scratchy throat. It's not the flu and it doesn't seem to come with a fever, but it's annoying.

Guess I'll be living on hot chicken soup with a squirt of lemon juice and hot tea with honey for a while!

  6. That bug that I brought home for the office kept my immune system busy from Saturday on; Sunday and Monday sufficiently busy that I had to skip cycling. Today I felt much better but I decided to take it easy; 57km (35 miles) in a bit more than two hours. I came home a bit late, only to discover that my spouse now started an immune system workout. I really miss WFH, when not falling ill was so normal.

  8. Update on the cold virus (or whatever).
I woke up a bit after midnight and could feel that the fever had pretty much subsided.
A few hours later and I'm feeling a lot better than 12 hours ago - I've got an annoying cough and a headache, but I'll take those over the shakes!
Whatever I was doing - or whatever course nature took - I'm very grateful!

  10. I'm not feeling quite as dreadful as I was expecting to this morning.
I've definitely got a cold, and it's definitely determined to clobber me.

Many years ago a consultant (medical type) I worked with advised me to deal with colds by attempting to raise my body's core temperature - his cure-all was a bath as hot as one could stand.
This advice has stood me in good stead, even if the science is a bit rubbish!

With only a shower here, I did my best, and went to bed with regular doses of paracetamol and lots of fluid.
About 3am I put my pullover on, and I'm sweating like a good'un. (and probably stink).
But I don't feel too dreadful!

I don't know what we're doing for the day but it won't be a lot.

    Keep the germs away!

  15. #Perth #WesternAustralia has a nasty #Rhinovirus / #CommonCold going around.

Saw someone with it - they looked 15 years older - had poorly coordinated walking and were sweating on a mild evening.

Also heard they'd isolated an #AgedCareWard for a week due to this virus.

  21. Ugh I feel awful.
Was trapped for a few hours last Saturday on a delayed Eurostar platform with hundreds of people crammed together.
I've picked up something, no fever though so that's good at least, but oh my chest and sinuses.
Indoor cat for a while, until I can sleep properly again.

  26. Flying back today from a work trip. Husband and I wear #N95 masks indoors anywhere.

Everyone at the airport is sick. The wet coughs, the hacking, the sneezing… does everyone else just not hear it? Is everyone oblivious to the sickness?

We made it hear by masking and didn’t get sick on the flight in. Hoping it’s true on the return trip.

  28. Having a cold sucks.
Came down on Saturday morning, immediately killing my weekend (missed a #londonfurmeet and a friend's housewarming, as well as the nicest day of the year)
COVID has made me hyper aware of my sense of smell when sick though, definitely no impact on that front

  30. @augieray

If you are sick at all, stay home.

It's not just #COVID. If you have the #flu, stay home. If you have a #CommonCold, stay home.

It's a #morality statement. If you are sick, do not transmit that illness to the community. If you are sick, you will recover faster if you stay home and rest. Staying home is a win-win-win.

Of course, from that #morality statement, we need to create social structures that allow you to stay home when sick. (Sick leave is a win-win, better for both the individual and the community.)

  32. After recovering from a stubborn and lingering cold, I've been wondering, “Why do colds seem more stubborn this year for so many people?”

“As far as experts can tell, these [200 cold-related] viruses haven’t changed to become more severe. But one reason they could feel more intense now is because our bodies have forgotten how to fight them off, Dr. Bhadelia said.

“The precautions we all took to lower the transmission of Covid in the early days of the pandemic also slowed the spread of these other viruses, Dr. Bhadelia said.

“So when people began ditching their masks and mingling more, they were exposed to a variety of illnesses again.”

So far I’m staying healthy, and fingers crossed it stays that way. But cold and flu season has most definitely begun.
