The Guardian: *Wild chimpanzees recorded waging ‘civil war’ with coordinated attacks between two groups*

"New study describes what may be the first case of a unified community of chimps, in Uganda, turning on itself"

"On a June day in 2015, primatologist Aaron Sandel was quietly observing a small cluster of the Ngogo chimpanzee group in Uganda’s Kibale national park when he noticed something strange. As other members of the chimpanzees’ wider group moved closer through the forest, the chimpanzees in front of him began to display nervous behaviour. They grimaced and touched each other for reassurance, acting more like they were about to meet strangers than close companions.

In hindsight, Sandel said, that moment was the first sign of what would become a years-long bloody conflict between a once close-knit group of chimps. …"

  4. World’s Largest Group of #Chimps Waging Deadly ‘Civil War,’ Scientists Discover
At least 24 #chimpanzees have been killed in a war that has split the Ngogo group of wild chimpanzees in two, turning former kin into enemies.
Though #JaneGoodal observed one example—Gombe #Chimpanzee War of 1970s, which resulted in 7 deaths—it’s estimated that these violent episodes occur only once every 500 years, based on genetic analyses of chimpanzee lineages.

  8. #Chimps, #Humans and #Macaques All Love a Little Drama
“These findings demonstrate that #social information is important, rewarding and valuable for humans and other #primate #species,” Lewis says. “It suggests that social information was also important for our shared primate ancestors who lived around 25 million years ago and that for millions of years it has been adaptive for primates to gain social information about those around them.”

  9. #JaneGoodall left this #life

After the first glance at the cover of her #book I began to read it as a kid

Her discoveries & her #love & #respect for the life around her deeply impressed me

First I wanted to follow her, learn from her

But than I realised that, whenever human conflict would touch that area, I'd be helpless, unable to protect #chimps or other animals

    So I chose another way

    To save this beautiful world

    (Small) bit by bit

    Together with others

    Because its worth it.

  10. #Chimps consume #alcohol equivalent of nearly 2 drinks a day
A new paper published in the journal Science Advances reporting the first measurements of the #ethanol content of #fruits favored by chimps in Ivory Coast and Uganda, finding that the chimps are consuming 14 grams of alcohol every day, the equivalent of a standard alcoholic drink in the US. After adjusting for the chimps' lower body mass, the authors concluded the chimps are consuming nearly two drinks per day. arstechnica.com/science/2025/0

And yet, somehow, the true discovery is that the article was blocked by the universe's own 400 error – a metaphor for the futility of it all. 📚🚫
