  29. Prepping for a new year

Once again, I find myself back here at my blog. It’s been ten months since I last posted. I’ve been working on other things, but this is always here, and I keep finding my way back. If nothing else, this is a great way to look back at my writing and teaching history.

I’ve been mostly relaxing this summer, but I’ve also been prepping for the upcoming school year.

The next class is one that has been a rough experience for the past two grades. From what we’ve been told, some of that is behavior, and some is sheer neediness. One of the encore teachers said this group needs the same routine instructions repeated every single day. For the past two years, the grade-level teachers have celebrated at the end of the year because it’s over. I’ve been there before, and I can relate to that feeling.

So, I’ve been spending time trying to plan ahead to be sure this is a successful year for the kids and for me.

I have a high bar for the worst year ever. In my last year in my last district, we had switched to trimesters and had students for only two of the three. This meant we had to teach the entire year’s curriculum in 2/3 the time. This also meant I didn’t necessarily have the same kids for both trimesters. Because of the scheduling, I ended up with my partner’s students, and she ended up with some of mine. So each trimester was starting over with community/classbuilding. We also had to adjust our actual curriculum. It was a rough go trying to convince kids that we were reading A Christmas Carol in October because it was a ghost story. I had been fortunate enough before to have only two preps, grade-level and challenge. Now I had two during 1st trimester and 2 last trimester, but the second trimester could be 3-4 as I could have grade-level and challenge of both A and B sections, and my partner wasn’t necessarily teaching the same sections so planning together became a challenge as well.

First trimester went okay, and I thought the second would be better…

    Yeah, no.

I wound up with a class in the middle of the day that was the worst I’ve ever had behavior-wise. I was emailing parents daily. I rarely write referrals; normally, I can deal with behavior in class, with or without the support of parents. That one class during that one trimester (12 weeks) ended up with more referrals than I had written in the entire previous five years. Kids would be sent to ISS just for my class for days. The assistant principal came in one day, just visiting classrooms, took a look around, apologized, and said she should have reviewed the roster before they finalized. One day, I was struggling so much that I called the office and asked them to send someone up so I could get out for a minute. I needed a break. The principal came up, I stepped out, and I could hear the kids. Their behavior changed not one iota with the principal in the room.

That’s my bar. So while I’m bracing myself for this next year, I also have to compare it to that year.

Since this group has been said to have the memories of goldfish, we’re starting there. The common story of goldfish having anywhere from a 3-30 second memory has been proven false more than once. I’m leaning hard into that.

The kids will start the year learning that goldfish have at least a six-month memory. I’m going to ask them to figure out what percentage of a goldfish’s life that is, yeah, math in language arts that will go over well, 😉 Then the question will be “Are you smarter than a goldfish?”

I’m going to ask them to write the directions for all routines in their notebooks, along with directions for each new assignment. Next to the directions, they’ll draw a fish. When they come to ask me what they’re supposed to do, I’ll ask them to “ask the goldfish”. We’ll have a goldfish that will keep the directions for absent students so they can also “ask the goldfish” for their notes. I will then review those notes with them. I have round Post-its and large see backgrounds with fish. A few times a week, their exit ticket will be to “feed the fish” with something they learned that day.

My goal is to help these kids be self-sufficient and limit their questions to ones they truly can’t answer on their own by reviewing directions by the time they leave me and head to high school.

    Fingers and fins crossed.
