For our #TatrasTrainTrip this September (which was pretty much trouble free) we flew out to Vienna which made me feel really guilty, but it was the only option given our time constraints for the rail journey back home from Bratislava to central England. -

Good morning.
Sleeping in your own bed is so much more restful than any so-called luxurious hotel bed.
Except - the hotels tend not to have a black cat that is repeatedly checking that, yes, you really have come back!The case is unpacked, the washing machine has started earning its keep.
And it's definitely Autumn in middle England.The post has been opened, the recycling bin has been fed with the votive offerings.
And it's home sweet home with all it's messy untidyness.The first part of the wrap-up blog has been written, ready to publish once the other section is complete.
And I'm so tired I can hardly think.But life must settle into its rhythm once again.
I've got the remaining after effects of the viral infection to beat into submission, so although I'm going to get to the coop for supplies, I'm crying off the Pétanque club, and will leave the allotment check until tomorrow.Have a restful Saturday.

Unfortunately it wasn't a restful night's sleep on the ferry - I just couldn't settle. I couldn't get my temperature right either - which is probably still that virus.
We got on the train despite Stena's best endeavours at confusing disembarkation.
And we're now comfortably zipping through the Essex countryside.The plan is still to change at Stratford & Farringdon to get the booked EMR train from St Pancras.
You know you're home when you hear 'seeyit, sayit shortit' on the PA. 🙄

Today's hurriedly written #TatrasTrainTrip #blog post - where we move from Germany into the Netherlands and home is not too far away.

We're in our cabin on the boat.
The tea is brewing.
The sun is setting (it's more than a bit cloudy though).I've got snack food for tea. Sacha still doesn't want food.
I think we set off in about an hour and a half.
Here's hoping for a restful night.
No Internet (that I'm prepared to fork out for) once we set sail - so I'll see y'all on the other side.

I suppose I could expect nothing less from Deutsch Bahn.
My food order from the ICE portal didn't arrive - so I went to the bordrestaurant and enquired - it seems that if you order on the English language page it accepts the order, but if you order in German it tells you that the portal isn't working.
The portal isn't working!Never mind, I've eaten my currywurst and fries and got a decent cup of coffee.

We're on the train!
It arrived slightly early, and departed on the dot of the planned time - is this really a DB service?It's an ICE Neo3 - the first time I have been on one - and very lovely it is too, grey and wood panels. Very classy! (Shame about a couple of the other passengers - but it's an international service 🙄
I've ordered food and drinks.
Sacha thinks she might be starting a chest infection 😩🤮🤒
It's a good thing that we'll be in England this time tomorrow. -
Today's adventure with DB will be a straightforward trip from Köln to Utrecht.
Then we'll be taking a short journey to Rotterdam with NS. Then, based on our previous good experience, we'll get the metro from Rotterdam Alex rather than Centraal.
The metro will deliver us to the ferry terminal at Hook of Holland.
So it's a couple of easy changes with no great time pressures. 🤞We're intending to get a bit of lunch on the ICE before we get to Utrecht, so we can be relaxed about food on the ferry.

That was a much better night's sleep.
The noise from Cologne's main railway station across the road was far less than the traffic noise.
The police went home to bed, along with their sirens, about 11pm (and haven't got up yet).
Only two coughing fits and one attack of cramp in my lower leg.
It's looking good for the rest of the day!

Drinking excellent milky coffee overlooking the Rhine in Remagen.
We've stopped off here to recharge our souls on our way to Cologne.
The river is a short walk from the station and there seems to be frequent services.
It's a nice town. -
Great location for this hotel with a terrace overlooking the Rhine in Koblenz.
Shame about everything else.
No plugs for the sinks, microwave, kettle and fridge but no cutlery or crockery. Several of the wall sockets don't deliver any electricity. Seriously steep steps to get into the place.Never mind - we're off to Cologne later, taking the slow train.

Good morning everyone.
We're leaving Dresden today to begin our dash across Europe on our way home.
Today it's a change in Mainz to get to Koblenz (DB willing!)Tomorrow is a short, scenic day to Cologne, and the day after we head to Hoek van Holland for the night ferry back to Brexit island.
Sacha has started with my cold - she's sweating and off her food. It might be a taxi to the Hbf this morning.

Update on the cold virus (or whatever).
I woke up a bit after midnight and could feel that the fever had pretty much subsided.
A few hours later and I'm feeling a lot better than 12 hours ago - I've got an annoying cough and a headache, but I'll take those over the shakes!
Whatever I was doing - or whatever course nature took - I'm very grateful! -
I'm not feeling quite as dreadful as I was expecting to this morning.
I've definitely got a cold, and it's definitely determined to clobber me.Many years ago a consultant (medical type) I worked with advised me to deal with colds by attempting to raise my body's core temperature - his cure-all was a bath as hot as one could stand.
This advice has stood me in good stead, even if the science is a bit rubbish!With only a shower here, I did my best, and went to bed with regular doses of paracetamol and lots of fluid.
About 3am I put my pullover on, and I'm sweating like a good'un. (and probably stink).
But I don't feel too dreadful!I don't know what we're doing for the day but it won't be a lot.
Keep the germs away!

That wasn't on my Bingo card - I've developed a cold (sore throat, headache and so on).
That's what comes of visiting the Health and Hygiene Museum!
I'm having an early night with lots of pills.
My wife hasn't caught it (yet) 🤞

For us here in Dresden we're going to use, or misuse, the first day of our hop-on hop-off bus tour tickets to get to the Hygiene Museum

I'm unsure how accommodating they are to English speakers, but my phone translates pretty well, and with our backgrounds we should be OK. If not, there's a cafe!

Good morning everyone.
I slept so much better last night. I was exhausted physically and mentally, so much so that after having a shower I really didn't know what to do with myself other than to fall into bed
There was a lot of noise from the street as I fell asleep - traffic, trams and shouting.
My German language skills were tested yesterday and found to be just about adequate!
There's no rush to get up as the expensive breakfast is until 11 (although I hope the good stuff gets replenished regularly).
We're going to the Zwinger palace complex today - it's just over the road, so no travelling needed.
Whatever you are doing today, I hope your Saturday goes with a Zwing!

Here's the summary #blog of today's trip, which I'll sum up as Scheiße, although it did turn out OK in the end.

Yes! We've got our reserved seats -the nasty family left at Prague.
The people in the compartment are friendly Germans.
We've had a really nice affordable lunch in the dining car.
The train has picked up time and is now running only 55 minutes late.
It's stopped raining.
Can I ask for anything more?

FFS.
Our reserved seats were double booked.A very aggressive family of 4 set about the poor conductor trying to sort it out.
Understandably he backed down, and he's found us a couple of seats in second class.
The train is absolutely rammed, and it's now running an hour late.We might be able to get our original seats at Prague but thats almost 2 hours away.
We're about 5 hours from Dresden.Poor Sacha is in a right state because she's nearly fallen twice while it was being sorted out, and then having to walk half the length of the train.
I can't fault the on board staff, but something is rotten somewhere.

We're in the Brno ÄŒD passenger lounge - again it's very strange!
We're the only passengers in here (although a couple have left).
The coffee is better here than in the last one at Olomouc.It was hilarious watching three staff trying to get the departure display board to..... we'll, display anything. In the end one of the other earlier passengers fixed it by selecting the correct HDMI input!
It looks like our train is about half an hour delayed.

The Mendel's Museum in Brno is possibly the best scientific museum I've ever visited.
I've got a science background and I learnt stuff about genetics, but someone with zero knowledge could come away with a good grasp of the subject and having been entertained on the way.

I've found out how to get the hotel room windows open - and breath again.I can also hear the bells of various churches and the occasional smell from the market below is wafting up.
