  1. #Language

    I'm a 3rd gen #AmericanBornChinese (#ABC).

Grew up hearing #Cantonese, which is my native #ChineseLanguage, spoken all around me when I was growing up but I was never required to speak Cantonese with others.

So, while I can speak a few words & phrases, I cannot carry on a conversation in Cantonese.

I've dabbled with learning how to speak Cantonese well enough to carry on a normal conversation for some time using books & tapes, which always resulted in failure. in the past.🤷‍♂️

I'm at it again, this time using #GoogleTranslate to help me in the process, which I'm using to learn new words & how words should be pronounced & structured to carry on a conversation.

Hoping to keep at to to gradually build up some fluency that I can practice w/my ABC GF, who knows how to speak a bit more Cantonese than I do.

    Wish me luck! 🙏

  2. Learning #ChineseLanguage is quite fun. Especially once I started recognizing some words spoken and written in a few Chinese anime series we watch (#LinkClick, #ToBeHeroX and #LordOfTheMysteries). :blobfoxaww:
I think I'm still below A1, but it might be even more fun than when I picked up #Yiddish.

  3. Here's the recent post on Mapping Mandarin™ at Substack. This is a short story I wrote about an experience living with Mongol herders in a yurt. It's difficult, but should be interesting for native speakers or high level learners.

  5. Interesting that the Chinese expression for reconsideration – "think twice" in English – is "三思"/"think thrice".
