  1. Lot of interesting sources on NDL online collections are embedded in scanned US occupation period files. Example: the 日満支 工業年鑑 for 昭和15 is only available as part of evidence for war crimes trials here: dl.ndl.go.jp/pid/12922208/1/4 while elsewhere only up to 昭和13 (dl.ndl.go.jp/ja/pid/1115528) #japan #primarysources #asianists

  11. Some students in my China Revolutions honours module are studying Chinese. I thought I would give them some flashcards of useful terms related to the history covered by the module (late Qing to 1989) which I put here on Frog in a Well:

    froginawell.net/games/terms/

Are there any important terms/slogans etc. I have left out that you think I should include (mostly Maoist China)?

  13. Stumbled across journalist Jacques Marcuse's 1967 "Peking Papers" memoir. Suffers from the typical issues with more snarky westerners in Maoist China, but Ch 30 overview Lei Feng campaign is quite funny, especially on Lei Feng's "reincarnations" like Wang Jie 王杰. archive.org/details/pekingpape #china #asianists #histodons

  15. Made an interactive practice map of China with modern provinces, provincial capitals and a few other cities important in modern Chinese history for use in my China's Revolutions module. This is for students to help practice for their map quiz (required but no grade for credit). They'll be asked to label a printed blank version of the map and draw their best attempt at the (modern) course of the Yellow and Yangzi rivers.

  17. Put together a little timeline flashcard engine with an LLM for my China's Revolutions module (focuses on 1850s to 1989) for my students to review a basic timeline and one of the supplemental timelines on a period they want to focus on. Supplemental timelines don't repeat the main events in the first timeline required for study. Would welcome feedback on events you think ought to be included or dates/details I've gotten wrong.

  21. Sept, 1940, international settlement of Shanghai, as Japanese forces occupy most of rest of the city: the Japanese Modern Science Library shows a film outdoors to an audience of allegedly 800 or mostly Chinese people. Next door Hamilton House complains about the noise, eggs are thrown, a cleaner is hit with a flying medicine bottle.

These bizarre scenes and so much more in this folder of the Shanghai Municipal Police records:

  27. I'm been working on a new wiki for the amazing collection of documents my students make great use of:

Records Of The Shanghai Municipal Police 1894-1949

    prosopa.org/smpa

I've been converting the national archive index of the documents to searchable tables, with links to copies of the files on the Internet Archive. In turn that will be the starting point for more pages dedicated to individual files of interest.

  31. Made lots of updates to this growing guide to open access primary sources on modern Shanghai for students (with an emphasis on things in English for them, but definitely not limited to that). Now hooked up the dynamic OA book list at the bottom, and lots of films:

What am I missing? Would really appreciate some suggestions for things to add. I'm definitely no Shanghai expert.

  35. Hello #asianists I am slapping together an open access primary source resource page on modern Shanghai, mostly for students who can only work with English sources. I really love Virtual Shanghai materials but my students feel a bit lost there so thought I would deep link some of the materials there plus lots of other resources.

Just getting started, but would love your suggestions of great (mostly English language, but anything) sources I should add here:

  39. City or country guy? In Ōsaka with Chisato, and at the temple Ishiyamadera (石山寺) in Shiga Prefecture, over the mountains from Kyōto. The idea of town and country refers to the surfing culture I was involved with in Hawaii, where town refers to Honolulu, Waikiki Beach, and the South Shore of Oahu, where waves are pretty good in the summer, whereas country refers to the North Shore of huge, wild waves that are mostly in the winter. So am I a town or country guy? Did I say wild? 😉

Ishiyamadera is a Shingon Buddhist temple associated with Lady Murasaki writing the Tale of Genji (源氏物語), and other rich lore, with a national treasure pagoda and main hall. The temple name Stone Mountain refers to the huge volcanic boulders there from an ancient eruption.

  41. Deeper and deeper into #Japanese #culture and people, I went into the #Kyoto Imperial Palace for a special performance of #Gagaku (雅楽), imperial court #music and #dances of #Asian mainland origin that have been performed there since the Heian Period over a thousand years ago. An acquaintance who is a Shintō priestess (see photo) from Nara played two types of traditional flutes that sustain an eerie or higher-worldly atmosphere. The relatively slow and deliberate movements of the mostly male dancers in many-layered gorgeous contumes stand in contrast with the frenetic tempo of modern #entertainment. We experience #time as the pace of transformation, and that brief time transfixed with the Gagaku performance was but an interlude from an ancient era in a workday preparing for university classes and a keynote address. Photos will have to suffice to evoke the special atmosphere.

  43. Prof. Yang was overheard in the faculty lounge complaining that the new history job they just announced is once again going to have a 19-21st century focus.
