  11. are Japanese people online writing プンオー instead of オープン now?

(writing “open” (as in a store’s grand opening) with the syallables reversed, like “peno”.)

if i don’t stay on top of this, the language is gonna turn into cockney rhyming slang while i’m not looking.

In my final quarter at Georgia Tech, I shared a room with a visiting student from Japan. We shared food, stories, and found connection.

  13. I've picked up Susumu Kuno's The Structure of the Japanese Language, a 1976 book full of geeky goodness about Japanese grammar and why it be like that. I'm a n00b at Japanese but it's still wicked enjoyable. #japaneselanguage #languagelearning #mitpress #currentstudiesinlinguistics

I was trying to revise my #Kanji with #Wanikani, but I've ended up #YakShaving and have actually spent more time recently thinking about #Romaji, reading up on #JapaneseLanguage entry methods, and filing documentation bug reports on alternative keyboard layouts and a Linux IME that I don't even use (yet?)

  15. Wow!!! It is a major miracle - got the #EncyclopediaOfJapaneseHistory to compile with #Xelatex after only two minor errors!

Made the mistake of switching from #TexLaTeX to #OpenOffice back in like 2005, in hopes of including more actual #JapaneseLanguage. Sure, that was easier, it was just everything else that was much harder.

I do NOT recommend word processors for documents over ~100 pages or so. Certainly not those with cross-references, appendices, an index, and a bibliography.

  20. 🇯🇵The #JapaneseLanguage is renowned for its unique linguistic and cultural heritage. Its complex grammar and writing system 📚🖋️, combining #kanji, #hiragana, and #katakana, reflect #Japan's rich history and diverse influences. While its origins are debated, theories suggest links to #AustroTai, #Altaic, and other families. This post explores the origins, development, and distinctive features of Japanese and its writing system:

  22. Learning Japanese the Right Way

After reading about Irina’s experiences of not learning Japanese, some people wonder how I learned Japanese correctly. While I can relate to a few experiences. Things such as picking up word immersion and some I can agree with, such as a language learning partner.
However, I disagree with some methods. Yep, it’s Duolingo, as it’s very […]

  23. Now that the short story has been published in a new translation by Ted Goossen, as "Mole" in 川上弘美 Hiromi Kawakami's new collection Dragon Palace, I thought I should finally finish the Japanese version (called 鼴鼠) that I've been reading (or more accurately, been trying to read) for the last 6 months - it's no more than about 25 pages long 😂.

There's a great sentence and a great new (to me) word I just read:
東京の空いっぱいを覆いつくす、猛々しい夕焼け。(A raging sunset that occupies the entire sky over Tokyo.)

猛々しい (たけだけしい) means raging or furious, and I love how it repeats the 猛 kanji, which by itself already means fierce, furious or wild, so 猛々しい is like rage or fury doubled 😁

  24. I'm following this IG account translating words/expression from English to #Japanese and #Korean.

The reason why I find Japanese intimidating and I decided to focus on Korean first is well illustrated by the word #Monday.

In Japanese it requires 3 #kanjis. Kanjis are #Chinese characters not linked to a sound. To know how to read them, #hiragana are placed above them at the beginning.

In Korean, you just need to learn how to read #hangul.

  26. "want" can be expressed as something that sounds like hochu in Ukrainian (and Russian) and hoshii in Japanese. I don't think there's any connection, but I like these sort of synchronicities #language #JapaneseLanguage #UkrainianLanguage

  27. Another one I'm getting for Chinese is 撒娇 (sajiao), which is a 'playing the coquette' sort of attitude. It can be very annoying and cloying, but also cutesy. It also suggests 萌え (Moe) in Japanese. I need to start making a list for my department :)

  29. Has anyone in #langtoot #langtwt @languagelovers #languagelearning had good experiences/suggestions on how to find tutors on Preply? I'm just starting in Japanese and am upfront to the possible tutor that I'm a beginner but I'm getting lots of pushback and expectation of a level of conversation - even before a trial lesson. #languages #preply #japaneselanguage
