I have also helped several people start and settle into veganism and I never shy away from pointing directly at the harm and calling out hypocrisy, self-serving rationalizations, logical fallacies etc. Am I being shitty by being direct? By calling people non-human animal abusers and murderers when those same conversations have led to them becoming committed vegans themselves?

I believe that you have had more "success" with convincing people to eat a plant based diet for their own sake, but then why would they stop buying honey or "animal-tested" products or supporting non-human racing or zoos/aquariums or just leather and fur products like just off the top of my head a badger hair shaving brush what is the benefit to the individual to avoid these things

You can't combat a poisoned well by toning down your advocacy that's exactly what the flesh propagandists want they want you to quiet down and stop taking extreme actions that might hurt their profits. "Injustice is never abolished by appealing to the sensibilities of the oppressor" At this moment we need more extremists not more liberal vegans and plant based dieters, the movement will continue to grow with or without you based on outreach strategy you have briefly outlined, but the radical flank of veganism is extremely small and can use all the help it can get.

Fundamentally veganism is a rights issue the focus should never ever be on how veganism can benefit humans, its ok to talk about it but to center vegan activism entirely around humans is literally de-centering the victim and plays right into speciesist narratives about how humans are the first priority and other animals exist for our benefit, except in this veganified version those animals exist to support the biosphere we live in rather than as a source of materials

    2)
see 1) d. , by not presenting the abuse of non-human animals in the foreground it gives implicit license to the abuse by implying that veganism is something that is for humans or even for the benefit of the individual framing veganism as an amoral position or a lifestyle choice. In much the same way that you don't get someone to stop physical abuse to humans by trying to convince them that it would be good for their mental health to be less violent. The problem in both human and non-human cases is either outright supremacism or disinterestedly profiting from others suffering while actively ignoring the harm so they can sleep at night

  6. From @joannechocolat

Jeanne Villepreux-Power (1794 – 1871), was a pioneering #French marine biologist, described by English biologist Richard Owen as the "Mother of Aquariophily."

In 1832 she was the first person to invent and create aquaria for experimenting with aquatic organisms.

Personal note: She created the first offshore research stations — a system of immense cages she anchored off the coast of #Sicily, complete with observation windows through which she could study #argonauts * undisturbed. 🐙

(* an octopus known as paper #nautilus for the thin, intricately corrugated shell of its females and the sail-like membranes protruding from it like a pair of bunny ears)

Every day, she prepared food for them, rowed her boat to the cages in her long skirts (👀 !!), and knelt at the platform, observing for hours on end.

As one can imagine, that got old fast (!!) so, in order to transfer her observations and experiments ashore, she pioneered the #aquarium.

  10. #KnowledgeBit: The #Zebrafish, a popular #Aquarium fish, is an important and widely used vertebrate #Model #Organism in scientific research, for example in drug development, in particular pre-clinical development.

It is also notable for its regenerative abilities, and has been modified by researchers to produce many #Transgenic (genetically modified organisms) strains.

  11. Testing the water and finding perfect parameters and happy, healthy fish never gets old 😁

Just set up a quarantine tank since we're going to add some new plants and some Amano shrimp soon. My wife's students have been begging for them and I need to make sure to do things right.

  17. Shaan and Kiran’s Aquarium

The gravel is pale and clean, each piece settled into place. Bright plastic plants stand tall—red to the left, green through the centre, peach off to the right. A few platys drift near the surface, orange and black tails flicking gently in the current. It’s Monday, 7th December 2009. Shaan is ten, Kiran is nine.…
