M : The mystical baker
"She was fourteen years old when they had first met, about thirty years his junior. Attracted by her beauty and by her knowledge of the Bible, the former baker and self-appointed prophet had lured her away from her parents with holy and beautiful words and told her that God had shown him great things and instructed him to leave is lawful wife and to take her as his spiritual sister and bride."

The ‘false prophet’ v the pope: Argentina faces clash of ideologies in election
In one corner of the ring stands #Javier #Milei, 52, self-described former tantric sex coach, outsider #anarcho-#capitalist and #frontrunner in Argentina’s upcoming presidential elections
In the other, his compatriot #Pope #Francis, 86, world champion of the poor, repeatedly derided by Argentina’s likely next president as “a fucking communist” and “the representative of the evil one on Earth” for promoting the doctrine of “#social #justice” to aid the underprivileged.
Milei, a political unknown until 2020, has pledged to wage a “cultural battle” to transform Argentina into a #libertarian paradise where capitalist efficiency replaces social assistance, taxes are reduced to a minimum and cash-strapped individuals are allowed to sell their body organs on the open market.
From Rome, Pope Francis has expressed grave concern about the rise of such callous policies in his home country. “The extreme right always reconstructs itself, it is the triumph of #selfishness over #communitarianism,” he said in a television interview in March when asked about #Argentina’s upcoming #elections

The Ascendents
Ancestry, Memory, Humanity, and the Upward Calling of the Living
Ascendent by kmlsWe have been taught to say that we are descended from those who came before us.
The word is not wrong. It is genealogically useful. It traces the stream from the spring, the branch from the trunk, the child from the parent, the living from the dead. It tells us that we are not self-made, not self-originating, not isolated sparks floating in the void. We come from somewhere. We are carried into being by names, bloodlines, migrations, accidents, loves, wounds, prayers, hungers, wars, fields, fires, and forgotten hands.
Yet the word troubles me.
For to say that we are descended may also suggest a downward motion, as though we have fallen from some ancestral height. It can feel as if the past stands above us in solemn judgment, and we, the living, are merely the lower remainder: diminished copies, scattered seed, thin-blooded heirs of stronger people.
We speak of descent as if we are always coming down.
Down from the fathers.
Down from the mothers.
Down from the old country.
Down from Eden.
Down from glory.
Down from the dead. But what if the truth is not only that we descend from them?
What if we ascend from them?
What if we are not the falling away of our ancestors, but their rising continuation?
What if we are the place where the buried become conscious, where the forgotten become remembered, where the unfinished become possible, where the dead are not merely behind us but beneath us — not as a weight dragging us downward, but as roots pressing life upward through the dark?
To be human is not simply to be descended.
To be human is to be ascendent.
Not ascendant in the arrogant sense. Not ascendant as empire is ascendant, not as a conqueror ascends a throne, not as a nation ascends by trampling another underfoot, not as wealth ascends by feeding upon the poor, not as the celebrated ascend by making the nameless disappear.
That is false ascendancy.
That is Babel.
That is the tower built upward by those who refuse to look downward at the bodies embedded in its bricks.
The ascendancy I mean is humbler, older, stranger, and holier. It is the rising of life from soil. It is the green blade through the graveyard. It is memory becoming mercy. It is grief becoming wisdom. It is ancestry becoming vocation.
We are not above our ancestors because we are better than they were.
We are above them because they are beneath us as foundation.
The child stands higher than the parent only because the parent has bent low.
The living stand higher than the dead only because the dead have become earth.
Every generation is lifted by those who are no longer visible.
This is the first doctrine of the Ascendents: we rise from what has been buried.
We rise from bodies and stories. We rise from names spoken and names erased. We rise from villages burned and fields planted. We rise from ships, cabins, kitchens, trenches, meetinghouses, reservations, prisons, refugee roads, hospital rooms, schoolhouses, barns, factories, cemeteries, and quiet beds where the dying whispered blessings no one wrote down.
We rise from all of it.
Not only from glory.
Not only from virtue.
Not only from noble sacrifice. We rise also from sin.
This is what makes ascent morally dangerous.
For our ancestors do not hand us only wisdom. They hand us wounds. They do not give us only courage. They give us cowardice disguised as prudence, prejudice disguised as tradition, violence disguised as necessity, greed disguised as providence, silence disguised as peace.
To be ascendent is not to romanticize the past.
It is to redeem it by telling the truth.
A person who worships their ancestors remains trapped beneath them. A person who despises their ancestors cuts themselves off from their own roots. But a person who honors their ancestors truthfully becomes capable of rising.
Honor is not flattery.
Honor is not nostalgia.
Honor is the severe mercy of remembrance.
To honor those before us is to receive what was good, repent of what was evil, grieve what was broken, and carry forward what was unfinished.
We are the living edge of their becoming.
We are their unresolved sentence.
We are their prayer still traveling.
We are their question still being answered.
This means that the past is not dead in the simple way we imagine. It is not gone merely because the bodies are gone. The past continues to move through us as habit, language, land, fear, blood pressure, lullaby, recipe, doctrine, posture, accent, suspicion, hope, inheritance, and unexamined reflex.
History does not stay in books.
History enters the nervous system.
A war may end, yet its tremor continues in the children of the children of those who survived it. A displacement may be recorded as an event, yet the hunger for home may live for centuries. A massacre may be omitted from the official monument, yet the ground remembers. A church may repent in words while its architecture still faces the wrong direction. A family may never speak of grief, yet every child learns how to lower the voice around sorrow.
The dead are not silent.
They speak in us.
The question is whether we will listen.
The Ascendent is one who listens downward in order to live upward.
This is not ancestor worship. It is ancestor responsibility.
Nor is it progressivism in its shallow form. Progress, as commonly preached, often imagines time as a ladder on which the present naturally stands above the past. It assumes that because we come later, we must be wiser. This is foolishness. Chronology is not sanctification. The future can be more brutal than the past. Technology can amplify barbarism. A people may move forward in time while moving backward in soul.
No, ascent is not automatic.
Humanity does not rise merely by surviving.
We rise only when remembrance becomes transformation.
We rise when the grief of one generation becomes the compassion of the next.
We rise when the violence of one generation becomes the refusal of the next.
We rise when the silence of one generation becomes the testimony of the next.
We rise when the buried cries of the forgotten become the moral hearing of the living.
“The blood of your brother cries out from the ground.”
That ancient sentence is the foundation of all history.
The ground is not mute. The earth is not neutral. Soil is archive. Dust is witness. Every field has its dead. Every town has its omitted chapter. Every nation has its sanctified lie. Every family has its locked room. Every monument has a shadow. Every victory has a graveyard of the unnamed.
The Ascendent does not merely ask, “Who were my ancestors?”
The Ascendent asks, “Whose blood is beneath my feet?”
Not because guilt is the final word.
Guilt alone can paralyze. Shame alone can distort. Accusation alone can become another form of vanity, where the living make themselves dramatic by endlessly displaying the wounds of the dead.
The purpose of remembering is not to become impressive in our sorrow.
The purpose of remembering is to become faithful in our living.
To be ascendent is to understand that I am not an isolated self. I am a crossing point. I am a confluence. I am made of many streams, some clear, some polluted, some holy, some poisoned, all meeting in the temporary river of my life.
My task is not to pretend the waters are pure.
My task is to help them run cleaner through me.
This may be the deepest meaning of repentance: not self-hatred, but generational purification. Not the rejection of one’s people, but the healing of what one has received from them. Not a descent into despair, but an ascent into truth.
Repentance is how ancestry becomes possibility.
Without repentance, inheritance becomes repetition.
Without remembrance, repentance becomes vague.
Without love, remembrance becomes accusation.
Without courage, love becomes sentiment.
The Ascendent must hold all four together: remembrance, repentance, love, and courage.
Only then can the past become seed rather than chain.
There is also a personal meaning here.
Each of us carries within ourselves earlier selves. The child, the adolescent, the wounded one, the ambitious one, the ashamed one, the hopeful one, the foolish one, the frightened one, the one who failed, the one who survived. We often speak as if we have descended from those selves into disappointment. We look back and say, “I was once more alive. I was once more promising. I was once closer to what I might have been.”
But perhaps we also ascend from our former selves.
Perhaps every earlier self, even the embarrassed and broken ones, is part of the root system.
I rise from the child who dreamed.
I rise from the young person who misunderstood.
I rise from the failure that humbled me.
I rise from the wound that opened me.
I rise from the grief that deepened me.
I rise from the fear that taught me how much I needed grace.
Nothing is wasted if it can be transfigured.
This does not mean everything was good. Some things were evil. Some things should not have happened. Some wounds are not secret blessings. Some suffering does not ennoble; it damages. Some losses remain losses.
But even what cannot be justified may still be gathered.
Even what cannot be called good may still be refused the final word.
The Ascendent does not say, “All things were good.”
The Ascendent says, “Even here, I will rise.”
Not by denial.
By truth.
Not by domination.
By integration.
Not by forgetting.
By carrying.
This is why ascent is not escape. It is not floating away from the earth into disembodied purity. True ascent is rooted ascent. The tree rises because it goes down. The mountain ascends because it is grounded. The resurrected body still bears scars.
Any spirituality that rises by abandoning the wounded is not ascent but evasion.
Any politics that rises by erasing the poor is not ascent but conquest.
Any theology that rises by despising the body is not ascent but contempt.
Any family story that rises by silencing the inconvenient dead is not ascent but propaganda.
The true Ascendent rises with scars visible.
This is where humanity stands.
We are a species that has learned to fly but not yet learned to kneel. We have ascended into the air, into orbit, into code, into machines of astonishing power, yet our moral imagination often remains tribal, fearful, acquisitive, and easily bewitched by idols. We can split the atom and still cannot share bread. We can map the genome and still cannot honor the stranger. We can remember data forever and forget the dead almost instantly.
So the question is not whether humanity is technologically ascendant.
The question is whether humanity is morally ascendent.
Will we rise from our ancestors or merely repeat them with better tools?
Will we carry forward their wisdom or only refine their weapons?
Will we remember the forgotten or continue to build monuments to the victorious?
Will we become more human, or only more powerful?
The Ascendents are not those who dominate history.
They are those who redeem memory.
They are the ones who refuse to let the common dead remain common in the sense of disposable. They remember the foot soldier beside the general, the farmer beside the statesman, the Indigenous village beneath the colonial map, the mother beneath the family name, the enslaved beneath the plantation ledger, the child beneath the statistic, the refugee beneath the border argument, the prisoner beneath the ideology, the enemy beneath the uniform.
They understand that every human being is an ancestor of the future.
This is a terrifying thought.
How will the future ascend from us?
What soil are we becoming?
Will our lives be root or rubble?
Will those who come after us have to heal from us, or will they be strengthened by us?
Surely both.
We too will hand down contradiction. We too are mixed. We too are capable of tenderness and harm, courage and cowardice, insight and blindness. The Ascendent is not pure. The Ascendent is accountable.
Perhaps that is the most we can ask of any generation: not purity, but accountability; not perfection, but faithful transformation; not innocence, but the courage to become better ancestors.
To be an Ascendent, then, is to live with one’s face turned in two directions.
One face turns downward toward the dead and says:
I remember you.
I receive you.
I grieve you.
I forgive what can be forgiven.
I name what must be named.
I will not pretend you were gods.
I will not pretend you were monsters only.
I will carry what was holy.
I will heal what was harmed.
I will not let your suffering vanish.
I will not let your sins rule me.The other face turns upward toward the unborn and says:
I am trying.
I am unfinished.
I am clearing what I can.
I am planting what I may never see.
I am refusing some inheritance so you need not bear it.
I am preserving some inheritance so you may be nourished by it.
I am becoming soil for your rising. This is the holy middle place of the living.
We are between the buried and the unborn.
We are the narrow bridge of breath between memory and hope.
We are the Ascendents.
Not because we have arrived.
Because we are called upward.
Not upward away from the world, but upward into fuller humanity.
Upward into mercy.
Upward into truth.
Upward into responsibility.
Upward into reconciliation.
Upward into the difficult radiance of becoming worthy of the dead.
And perhaps this is why the dead haunt us.
They do not haunt us merely because they are restless.
They haunt us because we are.
They haunt us because something in them remains unfinished in us. They haunt us because the lie has not yet been confessed, the grave has not yet been marked, the name has not yet been spoken, the wound has not yet become wisdom, the inheritance has not yet become blessing.
The haunting is not only terror.
It is vocation.
The dead rise in us so that we may rise from them.
And if we listen closely enough, beneath every field, beneath every town, beneath every family tree, beneath every national myth, beneath every human triumph, there is a murmuring from the ground. It is not only accusation. It is not only lament. It is also invitation.
Remember us.
Tell the truth.
Rise better.
Become what we could not.
Carry us toward the light.
So let us no longer say only that we are descended.
Let us say also that we are ascended from.
Ascended from dust.
Ascended from grief.
Ascended from labor.
Ascended from women whose names were not recorded.
Ascended from men who did not know how to speak their sorrow.
Ascended from children who died too soon.
Ascended from migrants, prisoners, farmers, singers, sinners, saints, cowards, prophets, fools, and friends.
Ascended from the blood that cried out.
Ascended from the prayers that rose before us.
Ascended from the earth that holds us all.And let us become, for those who follow, not a ceiling but a root.
Not a burden but a blessing.
Not a curse but a calling.
Not the final height, but one more living terrace on the long climb of mercy.
For humanity is not yet finished.
We are still rising.
We are still being judged by the dead.
We are still being summoned by the unborn.
We are still becoming the answer to our ancestors’ unanswered prayers.
We are The Ascendents.

The Hemorrh Age
We live now
in the Hemorrh Age,not the age of honest wounds
tended by trembling hands,
not the age of scars
that speak of healing,
but the age of the open vein,
the praised rupture,
the sanctified split.Everything is torn
and taught to remain torn. The old ligaments of neighborliness,
frayed.
The sinews of patience,
snapped.
The small capillaries of mercy
burst one by one
beneath the pressure
of opinion, spectacle, grievance, noise. We are leaking.
Trust runs into the street.
Language pools beneath the door.
Truth is carried away
on a thousand little red channels
no one bothers to close. And everywhere
the merchants of division
move among us
with clean white gloves,
smiling,
holding their polished instruments,
whispering that this incision
is necessary,
that this cut is clarity,
that this tearing apart
is what it means
to be awake. They call hemorrhage conviction.
They call hatred discernment.
They call contempt wisdom.
They call cruelty a kind
of courage.And we, half-dizzy,
half-devout,
watching our common life
soak through the bandages,
mistake the spreading stain
for a flag.Even the holy things
are not spared.Altars become platforms.
Prayer becomes signal.
Prophets are drafted
into factions.
The wounds of the world
are trimmed and displayed
for effect.
Compassion is made to perform
beneath bright lights
until it no longer knows
how to touch a body
without first finding a camera. How strange,
that a people can perish
not by a single blow
but by endless bleeding.
Not by invasion
but by laceration from within.
Not by silence
but by the shriek
of everyone opening
everyone else.We have become
students of severing.
Apprentices of fracture.
Curators of the unsutured.Every difference
a knife.
Every slight
a blade returned.
Every memory
reopened.
Every sorrow
milked for more.No one asks now
how to heal a wound.
Only how to name it,
frame it,
share it,
weaponize it,
keep it wet.And still—
still somewhere beneath
this failing body,
beneath the fevered rhetoric,
beneath the hot blush
of tribal wrath,
some quiet stubborn tissue
tries to knit.A hand reaches.
A voice lowers.
A stranger refuses
the sweet narcotic
of contempt.
Someone binds what they did not tear.
Someone stays near
what others abandoned.
Someone chooses
not victory,
but mending.Perhaps that is how
an age survives itself. Not by denying blood.
Not by pretending
there was never injury.
But by kneeling at last
beside the opened body
and saying:Enough.
Let the wound close.
Let the pressure ease.
Let mercy return
to the smallest vessels.
Let the torn muscle remember
its first design.
Let us become again
something more than our bleeding. For if this is
the Hemorrh Age,
then let there also rise
against it
the tender and stubborn saints
of suturing,the keepers of bandages,

that a body
still can heal. -
The Decisive Revolution
“Jesus is risen. The decisive revolution in world history has happened – a revolution of all-conquering love. If people would fully receive this revealed love into their own existence, into the reality of the ‘now’, then the logic of insanity could no longer continue.”
There are some lines that feel less like commentary and more like a struck bell. Rudi Dutschke’s Easter words are like that. They do not merely describe resurrection; they announce it as a historical detonation, a rupture in the order of things. They refuse to let Easter remain tucked away in pious sentiment, safe sanctuary ritual, or abstract doctrine. Instead, they cast resurrection as revolution. Not one revolution among many, but the decisive revolution in world history.
That is a breathtaking claim.

Resistance, Remembrance, and Comunidad: Cinco de Mayo, Mount Pleasant, and the Rebuilding That Erases
Cinco de Mayo is often misunderstood in the United States. It is reduced to a marketing holiday, a day of beer specials, paper flags, mariachi clichés, and the shallow consumption of Mexican culture without the burden of remembering Mexican history. But the heart of Cinco de Mayo is not consumption. It is resistance.
The day remembers the Battle of Puebla, May 5, 1862, when Mexican forces defeated the French army, then one of the most powerful military forces in the world. It was not Mexican Independence Day. It was not the founding of Mexico. It was a day when a people under pressure from empire stood their ground. It was a day when the powerful were resisted by those who were supposed to lose. It was, at its deepest level, a day about memory, dignity, land, sovereignty, and the refusal to be swallowed by imperial appetite. (MySA)
That is why, for me, Cinco de Mayo cannot be separated from another May 5: May 5, 1991, in Washington, D.C.
I was there.

Lesley Manville on the “Slightly Prophetic Nature” of ‘Grotesquerie’ After Major Season Finale Cliffhanger
#TV #TVFeatures #Grotesquerie #LesleyManville #RyanMurphy -

The Worst Kind of Freedom
Dediticii of the State, Paroikoi of the Kingdom:
On Christian Nationalism, False Freedom, and the Pilgrim Church
There is a freedom that sings loudly and yet is already in chains.
#AmericanChristianity #captiveChurch #chains #ChristianNationalism #ChurchAndState #CivilReligion #crossAndFlag #dediticii #empireAndGospel #falseFreedom #Idolatry #kingdomOfGod #nationalismAndFaith #paroikoi #pilgrimChurch #politicalReligion #propheticArt #propheticWitness #religiousSymbolism #spiritualBondage #symbolicPhotography
There is a freedom that waves a flag, quotes a verse, demands a prayer in the public square, and calls itself holy. There is a freedom that speaks the name of Jesus with one breath and the language of domination with the next. There is a freedom that insists it is under threat whenever the neighbor is also allowed to breathe, speak, worship, live, vote, belong, or flourish. And that freedom is no freedom at all. It is fear dressed in patriotic robes. It is anxiety holding a Bible. It is the oldest lie of empire baptized in civil religion.
Christian nationalism is built upon that lie.
It says, “We must take the nation back.”
It says, “We must restore Christian order.”
It says, “We must defend our way of life.”
But underneath all of its grand language is a smaller and sadder confession: we do not trust the way of Jesus to be enough unless Caesar kneels beside him. And once the church begins to think that way, it has already bent the knee to another throne.
That is why the old Roman word dediticii has such prophetic force here. In Roman usage, deditio was surrender, and dediticii were those marked by that surrender, those living under the terms of a conquering power; in later Roman legal usage the term could also refer to people whose liberty was degraded, curtailed, a kind of freedom beneath full belonging. What a terrible phrase that is for the church to deserve: not merely conquered, but living in the illusion of liberty while shaped by the chains of empire.
And that is the tragedy of Christian nationalism. It imagines itself strong, but it is surrendered. It imagines itself sovereign, but it is already owned. It imagines itself defending the faith, but it has accepted the terms of a lesser kingdom. It seeks power in the way Rome seeks power, order in the way empires seek order, peace in the way fearful nations seek peace: through threat, hierarchy, exclusion, privilege, and force. It calls this righteousness. It calls this prudence. It calls this realism. But the gospel calls it what it is: temptation.
For every freedom built on another person’s diminishment is already a form of bondage.
If I can only feel secure when someone else is excluded, then I am not secure.
If I can only feel righteous when someone else is silenced, then I am not righteous.
If I can only feel free when someone else is less free, then I am not free.
I am merely protected by a cage large enough to mistake for a kingdom.
This is the bitterest irony of all: those who would limit the freedom of others in the name of preserving their own eventually discover that they, too, have become servants of limitation. They must constantly patrol the borders. They must always be on the lookout for enemies. They must keep watch over books, bodies, ballots, classrooms, pulpits, prayers, and pronouns. They must nourish grievance. They must cultivate suspicion. They must remain forever agitated because domination cannot rest. The soul that clings to supremacy must live in permanent alarm. And so the one who promised freedom becomes the custodian of fear.
That is why this is not merely a political error. It is a spiritual deformation.
Christian nationalism is not simply bad analysis. It is bad discipleship. It is the church forgetting what kind of people it is. It is the church forgetting that Jesus did not seize Rome; Rome seized Jesus. It is the church forgetting that salvation did not come through occupying the governor’s palace, but through faithfulness unto death. It is the church forgetting that Pentecost did not create a purified nation but a multilingual people. It is the church forgetting that the Lord’s Table is not bordered by tribe, race, party, passport, or patriotic myth. It is the church forgetting that Christ rules from a cross before he is confessed in glory.
And when the church forgets these things, it becomes available for conscription.
It can still sing.
It can still preach.
It can still quote scripture.
It can still say “Lord, Lord.”
But it begins to sound less like the Beatitudes and more like a millstone. Less like the prophets and more like the court. Less like the crucified and more like Pilate washing his hands while the machinery of death carries on.
Against all this, the New Testament gives the church another word, a better word: paroikoi. The term carries the sense of strangers, sojourners, resident aliens, people dwelling near but not fully at home in the order around them. In 1 Peter 2:11, believers are addressed in precisely that way, as “foreigners and exiles,” those whose lives in the world are real but not reducible to the world’s claims. And Paul, in Philippians 3:20, gives the church its political center of gravity: “our citizenship is in heaven.”
There is the contrast.
Dediticii are defined by surrender to imperial terms.
Paroikoi are defined by faithful dwelling without ultimate belonging.
Dediticii live under the dictates of the conqueror.
Paroikoi live under the promise of God.
Dediticii accept diminished freedom as though it were normal.
Paroikoi know that their life comes from another commonwealth.
Dediticii are shaped by subjection.
Paroikoi are shaped by pilgrimage.
The church is called to be paroikoi, not dediticii.
The church is called to dwell in the world, bless the world, serve the world, weep with the world, labor for justice in the world, and seek the welfare of the city; but it is never called to worship the city, confuse the city with the kingdom, or surrender its conscience to the rulers of the age. It is called to be near without being possessed. Present without being absorbed. Public without becoming idolatrous. Loving without becoming captive. The church does not need to dominate in order to be faithful. The church needs to remember who it is.
And who is it?
It is a baptized people, not a blood-and-soil people.
It is a Eucharistic people, not a nationalist people.
It is a Pentecost people, not a monocultural people.
It is a cruciform people, not a triumphalist people.
It is a resurrection people, not a fear-governed people.
That is why Christian nationalism is so dangerous. It does not merely propose a flawed strategy. It offers the church a false identity. It tells Christians they are landowners of a sacred nation rather than pilgrims of a holy kingdom. It tells them they are guardians of civilization rather than witnesses to Christ. It tells them their task is to possess the machinery of rule rather than embody the mercy of God. It tells them the neighbor’s difference is a threat rather than an occasion for love. It tells them anxiety is wisdom. It tells them domination is stewardship. It tells them privilege is providence.
And many believe it because it flatters the flesh.
It flatters the longing to be secure without sacrifice.
It flatters the longing to be righteous without repentance.
It flatters the longing to be powerful without being crucified.
It flatters the longing to call coercion conviction and call fear discernment.
But Christ does not flatter the flesh. Christ calls the church to die.
To die to supremacy.
To die to tribal vanity.
To die to the dream of holy violence.
To die to the seduction of being chaplain to empire.
To die to every flag that asks for what belongs only to God.
The church must hear this plainly: when it reaches for power by limiting the lives of others, it does not become more itself. It becomes less. When it seeks freedom through exclusion, it does not enlarge liberty. It redistributes bondage. When it blesses structures that narrow the humanity of the neighbor, it nails its own soul to those same structures. That is the judgment hidden inside the word dediticii: those who think they have secured their place have, in truth, surrendered themselves to a power that can only give them the worst kind of freedom.
But the gospel still offers another way.
Be paroikoi.
Be pilgrims.
Be resident aliens of grace.
Be people whose identity papers are issued in heaven.
Be people who do not need Caesar to certify the lordship of Christ.
Be people free enough to bless without ruling, to serve without controlling, to witness without seizing, to love without fearing.
For our citizenship is in heaven.
And because our citizenship is in heaven, we are finally free on earth: free to tell the truth, free to defend the vulnerable, free to refuse idols, free to reject every gospel of blood and soil, free to stand with those whose liberty is threatened, free to be neither conquerors nor cowards.
The church does not need a Christian nation.
The church needs Christian faithfulness.
The church does not need the illusion of greatness.
The church needs the courage of holiness.
The church does not need to become the soul of the state.
The church must become again the body of Christ.
So let the nations rage. Let the parties boast. Let the demagogues preach their frightened liturgies of invasion, purity, and control. The church must not join their choir. The church must remember its name.
Not dediticii of the state.
But paroikoi of the kingdom.
Not surrendered to empire.
But dwelling in hope.
Not the keepers of a lesser freedom.
But the witnesses of the all-encompassing liberation of Christ. -
I Visited The Western Wall Twice

Welcome back, readers and fellow followers of the Lord! This is the 11th chapter of my ongoing series of articles about the holy nation of Israel with recollections about the experiences and discoveries I had during the pilgrimage tour I joined with my local church (hosted by strategic partner Behold Israel) in 2023. To see my previous Israel tour articles, click here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here and here. No matter what happens in this unpredictable and chaotic world we live in, I will always stand with Israel and my faith in the Lord remains uncompromising!
In this latest edition of my Israel 2023 series, I share with you what I experienced when I visited Western Wall in the Old City of Jerusalem not once but twice. Also referred to as the Wailing Wall, the Western Wall is a very holy site and is one of the most definitive places to be in with regards to worshiping the Lord.
For starters, I share with you the very video I recorded about my first time ever to arrive at the Western Wall Plaza (note: I was with my pilgrimage tour group companions, our pastors and our hard-working local tour guide) as well as my first-ever approach (starts at 2:01 in the video) to the Western Wall itself. It’s a video of more than three minutes and it’s available for public viewing via YouTube. Watch the video below and pay attention to the details closely.
As you can see in the above video, I stopped recording before entering the perimeter to get closer to the Western Wall. What happened after was my personal discovery and my personal sensing of the Lord’s presence.
About The Western Wall
To put things in perspective, the Western Wall is a retaining wall which was part of the Temple Mount expansion that King Herod (Herod the Great) did in around 19 BC. It is one of the four supporting walls of the Temple Mount which remained intact after the destruction of the Second Jewish Temple many decades later. Above it is the Temple Mount already.
Historically, the First Jewish Temple was built on the top of Mount Moriah during the time of King Solomon. The temple was destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 BCE. In 19 BC, King Herod started rebuilding a new temple and this includes enlarging the Temple Mount platform a lot which made it 1,575 feet long and 985 feet wide. Herod had ten thousand men working and trained a thousand priests to work on the most sacred parts of the Second Jewish Temple.
The construction was done after several years but the decoration was completed in 64 AD. Six years after the Second Jewish Temple was fully completed, the Romans destroyed it but the western side of the Temple Mount survived. This happened in 70 AD, long after Lord Jesus conquered death and ascended to Heaven.
At the part of the Western Wall near the corner of the Southern Wall is this area that was massively damaged when the Romans destroyed the Second Jewish Temple. Several huge rocks that fell from above during the 70 AD destruction have remained. The Western Wall faces westward and it is the closest in proximity to the site of the Holy of Holies, the most sacred location in the Temple for the Jewish people. Be aware that Mount Moriah is the same exact mountain where Abraham almost sacrificed his son Isaac before God sent the angel to intervene and provided the ram as the sacrifice.
For centuries, the Western Wall became a great source of influence and inspiration. It became the focus of yearning and prayer for the Jewish people for countless generations. The open-air section of the Western Wall serves as a place of worshipping the Lord and it is officially a synagogue. Apart from worship, the Western Wall keeps the memory of the Jewish Temples alive and it has also been used by the State of Israel for formal ceremonies. For centuries, pilgrims from around world came to the wall to pray and leave written noted in its ancient stones.
Physically, the Western Wall is 488 meters long and the height of the exposed section reaches a height of 40 meters above the bedrock of the eastern hill of Jerusalem (Mount Moriah). The open-air section of the wall (visible to the Prayer Plaza) is comprised of 46 layers of stone and the very large stones (that many are able to touch) were put in place during the time of King Herod (Second Jewish Temple period).
My First Visit – February 13, 2023
The widest shot of the Western Wall I managed to take during my first-ever visit. After recording the video, I placed my smartphone into my pocket, entered the worship area and gradually made my way to the wall.
With my Holy Bible in my left hand, I touched the Western Wall with my right hand and started spending quality time with the Lord God, praying to Him. With all my heart, I expressed my thanks and dedication to Lord Jesus there at the wall. I also prayed in support of Israel and the peace of Jerusalem.
Each moment I had there, I truly felt God’s presence and I did not confuse it with the wall’s visual magnificence. As I prayed, I felt the unction from the Lord to open my eyes and look straight up at the blue sky above knowing that He is spiritual, and He is in Heaven. The Lord is not inside the stones of the wall but in His Kingdom. That said, I did not worship the stones (reminder: idolatry is foolish and unholy) as I directed my worship directly to the Lord knowing He is in Heaven.
Many people praying at the wall touching it. There were others who did the same while standing or seating on a chair. In the lower-left corner of the picture is Wilson’s Arch which leads into the indoor synagogue. Partly seen in the background is the fence that separates the men from the women. Above everyone at the right is the platform leading to Temple Mount. The men’s side on the left and women’s side on the right. More of the high platform leading to the Temple Mount.Because we only had fifteen minutes to spend as our tour group had a schedule to follow, I wisely spent time to praising and honoring the Lord. Let me remind you all that Lord Jesus will someday return and He will fulfill His promise. He will return in Israel and Jerusalem will be His destination.
After praying to Him, I spent the remaining minutes looking around and observing. I was surrounded by Ultra-Orthodox Jews, National Religious Jews, rabbis, tourists and Christians. I witnessed the religious rituals and practices of the Jewish people and I know deep inside that the ties between Jews and Christians are biblical.
As I walked out to rejoin my pilgrimage tour group, I took shot of the women’s area of the Western Wall. The whole area is indeed sacred and that means visitors should be respectful and should practice decency near the Western Wall. People praying to God are to be respected and when there are many others praying while touching the wall, you will really have to wait for your turn. Be mindful that the Lord is always watching you as there is simply no reason to cause disrespect, playing around and causing trouble at the Western Wall.
When my fifteen minutes ran out, I went to the exit to rejoin my tour group.
My Second Visit – February 15, 2023
I took this shot of the Western Wall after making my way through from the Temple Mount. Two days later, it was our tour group’s one and only rest day. After having a really early breakfast at our hotel, I marched to the Old City of Jerusalem and visited the Temple Mount for the first time ever. After spending time up there, I took the exit and made my way down to return to the Western Wall.
Once again I took time touching the wall and praying to the Lord and expressing my thanks to Him with a lot of heart. After several minutes, I took a seat to pray to Him while resting my legs. Then I noticed a North American man (who looked so much like Hillsong Church’s Phil Dooley) with the Holy Bible at one end of the fence (separating the men and the women) by the wall facing at the other direction (his back on the wall). He preached the Word of God and asked the Lord to save everyone. What he said reminded me that God has a plan for everyone, including the Jews (His chosen people) and there is still time for the lost and unsaved to realize Jesus as the Lord and the Savior of all.
My hand touching the Western Wall. I spent much more time praying to the Lord during my 2nd visit there. After I was done praying by the wall, I decided to visit Wilson’s Arch as I was so curious why a lot of people had been entering and exiting it. It turned out to be Western Wall tunnel (with an arch area) and inside was a synagogue where there lots of Jews read the Old Testament, the Torah and pray. At the entrance/exit, a Jewish rabbi invited me in and assured me that foreigners and non-Jews were welcome. So I went in and he showed some parts of the indoor synagogue.
As it was a place of worship by the Jews, I was cautious moving inside and spending time observing. Carefully I only took a few photos for this feature article and it was astonishing to see more of the Western Wall indoors. Not only that, it was impressive to see the arches – including those huge stones above our heads – and it turns out they were constructed during Herod’s time and without any cement at all. There were also lots of shelves of books on both sides.
I took this shot during my short visit inside the Western Wall tunnel. See those huge stones above everyone? Those were put into place during the time of King Herod and no cement was ever used. It is amazing to see as it was constructed without any of the modern construction technologies of today. The Western Wall tunnel synagogue is one of the holiest synagogues in Israel due to its proximity to where the First Jewish Temple was wherein the Holy of Holies resided. The indoor synagogue is one of the holiest synagogues in Israel due to its proximity to where the original Jewish Temple was wherein the Holy of Holies resided. Since it was my plan to revisit the Upper Room and visit both King David’s Tomb and Oskar Schindler’s grave, I eventually left the Western Wall tunnel. Before tracing my way back to the Jewish Quarter (where we visited two days prior), I took one last look back at the Western Wall. I intend to revisit it and spend quality time with the Lord there again in the future.
Biblical Significance
While it is a fact that the Western Wall was not explicitly mentioned in the Holy Bible, it has always been part of the Temple Mount since Herod’s time. To put things in perspective, we need to go back to the time when King Solomon dedicated the First Temple asking God to hear the prayers made toward it. Learn from the holy scriptures below.
that Your eyes may be open toward this temple night and day, toward the place of which You said, ‘My name shall be there,’ that You may hear the prayer which Your servant makes toward this place. And may You hear the supplication of Your servant and of Your people Israel, when they pray toward this place. Hear in heaven Your dwelling place; and when You hear, forgive.
1 Kings 8:29-30 (NKJV)
“Moreover, concerning a foreigner, who is not of Your people Israel, but has come from a far country for Your name’s sake (for they will hear of Your great name and Your strong hand and Your outstretched arm), when he comes and prays toward this temple, hear in heaven Your dwelling place, and do according to all for which the foreigner calls to You, that all peoples of the earth may know Your name and fear You, as do Your people Israel, and that they may know that this temple which I have built is called by Your name.
1 Kings 8:41-43 (NKJV)
The First Jewish Temple eventually got destroyed by the Babylonians. Centuries later, Herod executed the massive rebuilding of the Temple (Second Jewish Temple) in Jerusalem as well as the expansion of the Temple Mount itself. What was achieved drew reactions from many people who saw it and there were references of such reactions in the New Testament. For insight, read the scriptures below.
Then as He went out of the temple, one of His disciples said to Him, “Teacher, see what manner of stones and what buildings are here!”
Mark 13:1 (NKJV)
Then the Jews replied, It took forty-six years to build this temple (sanctuary), and will You raise it up in three days?
John 2:20 (AMPC)
To be clear, the forty-six years mentioned in John 2:20 refers to the massive renovation and the expansion of the Second Jewish Temple.
Long before the Second Temple got destroyed, Lord Jesus prophesied its destruction. By the time Lord Jesus made the prophesy, He was already rejected by the religious Jews. Those people refused to accept Him as their Messiah and they had disobeyed God as a result. Lord Jesus wept for Jerusalem knowing that suffering and destruction would come and it happened in 70 AD. Learn from the scriptures below.
Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, saying,
“If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”
Luke 19:41-44 (NKJV)
Then Jesus went out and departed from the temple, and His disciples came up to show Him the buildings of the temple. And Jesus said to them,
“Do you not see all these things? Assuredly, I say to you, not one stone shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown down.”
Matthew 24:1-2 (NKJV)
As it is very clear that God always has a plan for the faithful and His chosen people, it was prophesied that He would bring the Jews (scattered around the world) back to Israel in the last days. This prophecy was fulfilled in May 1948 when the modern State of Israel was formally established and a lot of Jews returned or settled in since then. Lord Jesus will return to us some time in the future and there is time for the Jews to accept Him as their Messiah, to repent and submit to Him. The other lost and unsaved people of the world still have opportunities to realize Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Very clearly, Lord Jesus is the hope of ALL nations! Learn from the scriptures below.
If any of you are driven out to the farthest parts under heaven, from there the Lord your God will gather you, and from there He will bring you. Then the Lord your God will bring you to the land which your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it. He will prosper you and multiply you more than your fathers.
Deuteronomy 30:4-5 (NKJV)
Jesus answered him,
“I assure you and most solemnly say to you, unless a person is born again [reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, sanctified], he cannot [ever] see and experience the kingdom of God.”
John 3:3 (AMP)
Beloved ones, let me repeat emphatically that the gospel entrusted to me was not given to me by any man. No one taught me this revelation, for it was given to me directly by the unveiling of Jesus Christ.
By now you have heard stories of how severely I harassed and persecuted Christians and how systematically I endeavored to destroy God’s church, all because of my radical devotion to the Jewish religion. My zeal and passion for the doctrines of Judaism distinguished me among my people, for I was far more advanced in my religious instruction than others my age.
But then God called me by his grace, and chose me from my birth to be his. He was pleased to unveil his Son in me so that I would proclaim him to the peoples of the world. After I had this encounter, I kept it a secret for some time, sharing it with no one. And I had no desire to run to Jerusalem and try to impress those who had become apostles before me. Instead, I withdrew into the Arabian Desert. Then I returned to Damascus, where I had first encountered Jesus.
Galatians 1:11-17 (TPT)
For He is [Himself] our peace (our bond of unity and harmony). He has made us both [Jew and Gentile] one [body], and has broken down (destroyed, abolished) the hostile dividing wall between us,
By abolishing in His [own crucified] flesh the enmity [caused by] the Law with its decrees and ordinances [which He annulled]; that He from the two might create in Himself one new man [one new quality of humanity out of the two], so making peace.
And [He designed] to reconcile to God both [Jew and Gentile, united] in a single body by means of His cross, thereby killing the mutual enmity and bringing the feud to an end.
And He came and preached the glad tidings of peace to you who were afar off and [peace] to those who were near.
For it is through Him that we both [whether far off or near] now have an introduction (access) by one [Holy] Spirit to the Father [so that we are able to approach Him].
Therefore you are no longer outsiders (exiles, migrants, and aliens, excluded from the rights of citizens), but you now share citizenship with the saints (God’s own people, consecrated and set apart for Himself); and you belong to God’s [own] household.
You are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets with Christ Jesus Himself the chief Cornerstone.
In Him the whole structure is joined (bound, welded) together harmoniously, and it continues to rise (grow, increase) into a holy temple in the Lord [a sanctuary dedicated, consecrated, and sacred to the presence of the Lord].
In Him [and in fellowship with one another] you yourselves also are being built up [into this structure] with the rest, to form a fixed abode (dwelling place) of God in (by, through) the Spirit.
Ephesians 2:14-22 (AMPC)
Conclusion
This was me during my first-ever Western Wall visit on February 13, 2023. I had The Passion Translation (TPT) Holy Bible with me. My thanks to the guy who took this picture for me.My two visits to the Western Wall were very significant to me personally. As seen above, each visit has been different, new discoveries happened and I spent quality time with Lord. The place is holy and it is a must-visit for anyone going to Israel. If I ever visit Israel again, I would return to the Western Wall to praise, thank and honor the Lord. If you are a person of faith who is about to visit Israel for the first time, I urge you to visit the Western Wall in Jerusalem. Learn from my experiences. I also encourage you all to stand united in support of Israel, learn to love and bless the Jewish people, help the lost and unsaved come to Lord Jesus and always pray for the peace of Jerusalem.
Pray for the peace of Jerusalem! May they prosper who love you [the Holy City]!
May peace be within your walls and prosperity within your palaces!
For my brethren and companions’ sake, I will now say, Peace be within you!
For the sake of the house of the Lord our God, I will seek, inquire for, and require your good.
Psalm 122:6-9 (AMPC)
Israel is the holiest place to visit in the whole world! Visit Israel with the Holy Bible! Pray to the Lord wholeheartedly and reveal to Him your heart’s desire to visit Israel to deepen your faith in Him. Always be the fearless and aggressive church of Lord Jesus! Follow the light of Lord Jesus, keep on praying to support Israel, learn to love and bless the Jewish people and pray for the peace of Jerusalem.

(ZDF, Neu)
