I love how the Easter Vigil liturgy specifically calls out bees. In the short version, the Easter candle is referred to as "the work of bees and of your servants' hands," while the long version refers to the flames shared from the Easter candle by the congregation's candles as "fed by melting wax, drawn out by mother bees to build a torch so precious."

Saint Elizabeth of the Trinity
Letter 266 to her mother, 15 April 1906 (excerpt)
Note: After a severe crisis on Palm Sunday, when she lost consciousness and the sisters believed death was near, Elizabeth unexpectedly revived before the priest arrived. In the days that followed—leading into Holy Saturday—her condition stabilized enough to suggest a brief possibility of recovery. This letter, dictated on Easter Day, 15 April 1906, follows that brief improvement on Holy Saturday and is written immediately out of that moment.

Today is #holysaturday. Unfortunately, the meaning of this day has gotten lost in much of contemporary #christianity.
Today isn’t a remembrance about Jesus passively waiting in the tomb for the resurrection. In fact our Lord was at work on Holy Saturday! As the Apostle’s Creed says: “he descended to hell.” This is known as the harrowing of hell, the day when Jesus descended to hell to proclaim his victory over death and hell, and to liberate the righteous souls who had been waiting there.
The teaching comes directly from Scripture, 1 Peter 3:18-20, which tells us that “Christ also died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit; in which he went and preached to the spirits in prison, who formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water.”
So today is about remembering the full extent of Jesus’ redemptive work. Today we remember that the power of hell has been definitively destroyed! What a precious mystery we remember this day!
Holy Saturday Lauds (Morning Prayer)
Today, the Church asks us to do something that is almost impossible for we modern people to do, and that is to be silent. Today, we continue to keep the Paschal Fast until the end of the Easter Vigil. That means we eat less, speak less, do less – all to keep the silence of this time. This is the time that has Jesus in the tomb. This is the time where Jesus descends into hell.
We don’t rush the resurrection, because we need to sit in the uncertainty and wait for the working out of our salvation. It’s not unlike the uncertainty we experience when we are awaiting test results for a serious illness. Or when one job ends and a new opportunity has yet to open up. Or when a relationship breaks and we have to wait our way through the healing. The uncertainty, the meanwhile, requires us to sit in the silence and await salvation.
There is a lot going on in the meanwhile, even though we don’t see it. There was on that first Holy Saturday. An ancient homily for this day puts it this way:
Something strange is happening—there is a great silence on earth today, a great silence and stillness. The whole earth keeps silence because the King is asleep. The earth trembled and is still because God has fallen asleep in the flesh and he has raised up all who have slept ever since the world began. God has died in the flesh and hell trembles with fear.
He has gone to search for our first parent, as for a lost sheep. Greatly desiring to visit those who live in darkness and in the shadow of death, he has gone to free from sorrow the captives Adam and Eve, he who is both God and the son of Eve. The Lord approached them bearing the cross, the weapon that had won him the victory. At the sight of him Adam, the first man he had created, struck his breast in terror and cried out to everyone: “My Lord be with you all.” Christ answered him: “And with your spirit.” He took him by the hand and raised him up, saying: “Awake, O sleeper, and rise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.”
Tonight our Elect are to be baptized into Christ. Tonight we will hear the stories of salvation and keep vigil for our Risen Lord. That’s tonight. For now, we fast and pray and keep silence, letting the significance of this moment sink in, waiting for the working out of our salvation.
And maybe we join our waiting to the wisdom of Saint Joseph, whose silence throughout the Gospel allowed the salvation of all the world to be worked out.
The “place of unknowing” is how the Rt. Rev. Deon Johnson (Bishop of Missouri) describes #HolySaturday in his #TheDisciplesWay reflection. I’ve never heard it put quite that way, however, I know the feeling very well. The place of unknowing or of uncertainty is the shoreline we walk when things feel the darkest—where earth & sea & sky are indistinguishable— & we feel as if we are alone in the universe. We struggle to get our bearings, to know which way to go. The silence is deafening & we struggle to hear anything else. Sometimes the wind steals our breath & pushes us around while the sea crashes, the sky threatens, & the ground beneath our feet is soft & sinks beneath us. This is a night of loneliness like the one the disciples faced after the crucifixion or Jesus’ felt in the garden of Gethsemane when he asked for this cup to pass from him. Yet, when we wake on Easter morning, he is risen & we look back on this night we see #Footprints in the sand where he carried us to new life.
