The day remembers the Battle of Puebla, May 5, 1862, when Mexican forces defeated the French army, then one of the most powerful military forces in the world. It was not Mexican Independence Day. It was not the founding of Mexico. It was a day when a people under pressure from empire stood their ground. It was a day when the powerful were resisted by those who were supposed to lose. "A tense, day-long standoff outside a South Burlington, Vermont house ended Wednesday night with federal immigration agents removing three people inside and a series of violent clashes between police and hundreds of #activists who tried to impede the apprehension.

"It marked the first major confrontation between protesters and federal immigration authorities in Vermont. Federal law enforcement deployed #TearGas and #flashbangs on a normally busy street in the state’s second largest city to disperse the activists who had surrounded their vehicles. Roughly 60 local and state law enforcement officers were also on scene, though the departments sought to distance themselves from ICE’s conduct.

"The incident began when a man fled Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents who had been surveilling a Dorset Street residence where he was staying.

"According to an ICE affidavit, the subject of the warrant was Deyvi Daniel Corona-Sanchez, a Mexico native who was removed from the United States in 2022, and later illegally reentered the country. In January, Corona-Sanchez was arrested by Middlebury police and charged with drunk driving, the affidavit says.

"Following a multi-vehicle crash, Corona-Sanchez escaped to a house on Dorset Street, authorities said.

"A growing number of protesters and police assembled outside throughout the day as immigration authorities waited for a criminal warrant to enter and arrest him.

"A neighbor, Richard Landsman, said an Ecuadoran family with two children had lived in the house for roughly a year. At one point in the afternoon, people helped a child leave the house; they were driven away.

"When the warrant came through after roughly nine hours, federal agents approached the front door with #TacticalGear and weapons drawn. They were supported by #VermontStatePolice troopers.

"Police wrenched away protesters blocking the front entrance and ICE agents broke down the door. Federal agents removed three people from inside, forcing them into an unmarked car. They attempted to drive off, but protesters linked arms and blocked the street. Confrontations ensued, and the agents eventually managed to drive off by running over a median and exiting via a driveway."

Following the temporary restraining order issued against federal agents’ use of teargas and other “less lethals” for 14 days, Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield has submitted arguments and evidence in support of a lawsuit brought forth by ACLU of Oregon on behalf of protesters and journalists that challenges violations of the First Amendment and the use of excessive force by federal agents outside the Portland ICE building.

The evidence shows that federal agents tear gassed protesters, including children, elderly folks, disabled people, and pets, repeatedly during the weekend of January 31.

They are urging the court to issue a preliminary injunction against federal agents' “unlawful use of tear gas, pepper balls, and other crowd-control munitions.”

The district court will hold a three-day hearing on the preliminary injunction motion, which will begin on March 2.

The feeling is excruciating, like your lungs are trying to kill you from the inside out. The sting in your eyes is painful, too. But oddly, after you’ve been tear gassed enough times, you mostly just resent the inconvenience of having to stand around and involuntarily gasp and sob. That summer, I learned the art of walking out of a cloud of tear gas — briskly, but not too briskly, lest you lose breath control and take in a huge huff of aerosolized pain.

"I thought about this five years later, as I watched Trump Attorney General Pam Bondi appear on Fox News after Customs and Border Protection agents killed Alex Pretti in Minneapolis. 'How did these people go out and get gas masks?' she asked, incredulously. 'These protesters — would you know how to walk out on the street and buy a gas mask, right now? Think about that.' "

She was just sitting there barely conscious, wheezing heavily, barely breathing through the wheezing…”

The medic told me that they had treated at least four children that day, adding "I’m never ever going to forget the sounds of those kids wailing in pain hacking up a lung in full panic mode. It was one of the worst things I’ve ever seen in my 8+ years of street medicine and EMS work."

"Both are signs that tension remains in the Minneapolis area after the departure of high-profile commander #GregBovino of U.S. #BoarderPatrol and the arrival of #Trump administration border czar #TomHoman, which followed the fatal shooting of protester #AlexPretti.

"'There’s less smoke on the ground,' Gov. #TimWalz said, referring to #TearGas and other #irritants used by officers against #protesters, 'but I think it’s more chilling than it was last week because of the shift to the schools, the shift to the children.'

ICE agents are changing their tactics

"Federal agents in the Twin Cities lately have been conducting more targeted immigration arrests at homes and neighborhoods, rather than staging in parking lots. The convoys have been harder to find and less aggressive. Alerts in activist group chats have been more about sightings than immigration-related detainments.

"Several cars followed officers through south Minneapolis after there were reports of them knocking at homes. Officers stopped their vehicles and ordered activists to come out of a car at gunpoint. Agents told reporters at the scene to stay back and threatened to use pepper spray."
