Dear Reverend Mother,
Today I would like to express double and most cordial thanks to you: for the wonderful gift you intended for me, the most essential requisite for a choir nun, and for the loving reception afforded to the poor protΓ©gΓ© [Dr. Ruth Kantorowicz] whom I entrusted to your goodness.
The breviary has not yet been ordered. Our Reverend Mother Prioress wishes to wait a bit until she can order several sets at once, because that will mean a larger discount. You need not fear that I am in straits. I have an old breviary, with a Proper [the Carmelite supplement containing the Orderβs proper liturgical texts], and am well able to follow everything.
You see, I am already permitted participation in all of the spiritual exercises in the daily schedule, with my prie-dieu in the sanctuary set right next to the grille [beside the grille separating the sanctuary from the nunsβ choir]. Of course, it will be even nicer once I may stand on the other side of the grate, in the choir. But even now, it is a superabundant grace.
The first Mass I attended here was for the Vigil of the Feast of Carmel. The Introit begins: Induxi te in terram Carmeli, ut comederes fructum ejus et optima ejus [βI brought you into the land of Carmel, that you might eat its fruit and its good thingsβ (cf. Jer 2:7), the Introit for the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, July 16]. And every day supplies me with a generous portion.
But the best part is that the spirit of Carmel is love, and that this spirit is very much alive in this house. A breviary is not necessary to commend your intentions to me daily. But it will always remind me how many there are who would love to stand in my place, who would be more worthy of it than I am, and how much I must try to learn to respond adequately to such a high vocation.
You will surely have seen from the first visit how greatly Frl. Dr. K. [Ruth Kantorowicz] is in need of help. I know I have laid a heavy burden on you. You cannot do more than open your hospitable house to her, and you have made her that offer. I intend to encourage her to accept the invitation when her time permits.
My mother is now beginning to suspect and to fear [Edithβs intention to enter Carmel]. I commend this most urgent intention to your prayers again.
