Today, 7 June 2026, marks the 248th anniversary of the birth of George Bryan (Beau) Brummell. He not only changed the face of male fashion forever and left us with a wealth of anecdotes full of wit, and indeed, sadness at times, but he also changed my own life. It was from him that I learned the true meaning of dandyism, and then began my journey into it in 2020, studying the Regency, the beaux who came before him, and the men who came after him. All of this helped me set my standards when seeking a partner and guided me in my own choices and attitude in life. His remarkable story has been told by Captain Jesse (his original biographer), who included Brummell's own letters and poems, as well as stories and facts about the people he knew. Many others followed, but the most important was Ian Kelly, who reexamined his story through the lens of modern science and knowledge and was the first to write that Brummell died of syphilis, as well as to give an estimation of his hight of six ft. two inches. This is a post I wrote some time ago about dandyism, but it contains an entire section on The Beau. He ought to be remembered, both for greatly improving fashion and for daring to live his life as he chose it and to carve his own path.
