I just tried Sumatra PDF on Windows for the first time and it blew my mind how fast it is on PDF rendering! It's totally becoming my default PDF reader for that OS!

New blog post: This blog got a new favicon thanks to the Small Web
Thanks to the magic of the Small Web, a stranger I'd never met handcrafted a new favicon for this blog.

During my work hours, and with company resources, I made a simple but useful library to get logging very easily set up for FastAPI projects, using structlog and with integration with svcs.
I think that would be quite useful for many folks, so I'm going to try to Open Source it. I expect resistance and a lot of red tape, but still I want to give it a try. Wish me luck!

I'm failing to find a way to open a Mastodon post in a new browser tab (on the standard web client).
Why can't I just right-click and "Open Link in New tab" anywhere? Where is my hypermedia? :(

Does anybody know of an RSS reader that tries some experimental, uncommon, approach like https://www.terrygodier.com/current?
I steer away from Apple's products, so @tg 's creation is not an option for me.

I spent the weekend adding a bunch of microformat classes to my blog and registering it to https://webmention.io/.
I have no idea if I added the microformats correctly. They seem to be parsed fine, but I'm not sure I'm using them right "semantically". If anybody wants to check it out (https://sergiswriting.com) it is greatly appreciated!
I guess next weekend I'll have to start adding some JS (gasp!) to display comments and other stuff.

🖥️🆘 With only looking at this picture, can anybody figure out if that's caused by some screen/electronics defect, or is it caused by physically damaging the screen (like hitting it or something)? I'm trying to help my parents who live a few thousand km away from me.

I have a trackball where the rubber feet are partially falling of. I was thinking of removing them, cleaning the remaining glue and grime with "Goo Gone", and then re-glue the feet back. Is that a good approach? If yes, what type of glue should I use for the feet?

I have zero experience with Lua. I'm interested on learning it a bit to see if then I can start tinkering with LÖVE for some video game prototyping.
I'm going to try to run through some of the challenges of Advent of code 2025 to force me to learn the basics. Wish me luck!

Is there a way to create a hyperlink on a website that links to Mastodon, but in a way that it pre-fills the message box with a user handle?
I guess that what I am asking is the equivalent of a mailto link.

jinja2-fragments now has proper #Starlette support: https://jinja2-fragments.readthedocs.io/latest/framework_integrations.html#starlette-integration
If you are using #htmx with Starlette, this might be of interest to you :)

Does anybody know of a Mastodon web client that allows using markdown or HTML to format posts?
I checked the list on https://joinmastodon.org/apps (web section), and they either have 0 documentation and just ask to make an account, or their docs don't cover this topic at all. An I don't feel like connection through each one of them to figure out.

Are TRRS coiled cables really that expensive to manufacture, or is it a case of "these cables are mostly bought by keyboard geeks who don't hesitate to drop a good amount of cash for this stuff" that makes them overpriced?
If you know of a seller with good quality/price, let me know please! I'm looking for a cable for my Moonlander.

New blog post: How to fix a Pixel Watch stuck on Fastboot
https://sergiswriting.com/how-to-fix-pixel-watch-fastboot/
My Pixel Watch 2 started randomly dying and eventually got stuck on a Fastboot screen. Factory resets didn’t help, and Google Support shrugged it off (out of warranty, of course). Determined to fix it myself, I downloaded Google’s official OS image, used ADB via the charger cable, and successfully flashed the watch back to life.

Version 1.8.0 of jinja2-fragments is out!
Release notes:
- Adds support for rendering multiple blocks on Flask, Quart, Sanic and Litestar.
- Fixes deprecated Litestar import. -
I'm so pissed right now. I've had 2 Fitbits and 1 Pixel Watch, and they have all failed shortly after the US warranty (1 year) expired..
It's so frustrating. I'm done with devices of these brands.

Can I get follow recommendations for 3D printing? I just got a BambuLab A1 and have so much to learn and experiment!

@hynek by any chance, do you know if the Beryl AX has any brother that it is even better/upgraded?
I think I'm going to get one in preparation of a long vacation, and I want to make sure I don't run into "oh you should have bought this other one instead which is slightly more expensive but way better".
-
I want be a bit more specific: I'm looking for frameworks that approach the idea of combining semantic classes (class-less?), with specifiers and utility classes. The attached screenshot gives good examples of what I mean.
I don't care as much as naming conventions, but how the classes are grouped on these 3 categories.

Any BEM CSS frameworks out there apart from http://bemskel.com/?

Is there a way of building two different Python wheels from the same source code, with one of the wheels not including some specific module/package?
I am using #hatch and pyproject.toml.
I could use two different pyproject.toml files, but it seems that it should be possible in some other way.

The Design Philosophy of Great Tables
https://posit-dev.github.io/great-tables/blog/design-philosophy/ -
I have a NAS that I use to backup my devices. Now I want to periodically backup that NAS to some cloud storage.
There would be many uploads and very rarely (hopefully never) downloads. So uploads and storage should be cheap, but it's OK if downloads are expensive.
What software and host/cloud providers do you folks recommend? I want to encrypt the data before uploading.
-
Well, the #SpiderOak client got confused with syncing a directory with caps with another with no caps, and I lost all the PDFs I had been saving for filing my taxes.
I've heard others complain how the software has not been updated in years, and it's obvious checking their website that they don't care for non-business users anymore.
Time to look for a better #backup alternative. Any recommendations?

I think some hardware on my #Pixel5a is broken.
This morning, it froze and then screen went blank. I've been able to reboot it a few times by leaving it unplugged for a few minutes, then plugging it in and pressing the power key for 30 secs. But after entering PIN, it freezes and dies again.
I managed to do a hard reset, but while downloading the apps it froze again. I'm discarding a software issue as it seems to freeze when it's doing "work". Any ideas?

A Deep Dive Into Python's functools.wraps Decorator
https://jacobpadilla.com/articles/Functools-Deep-Dive -
I would like to hear from people using screen readers. Do you prefer the hashtags to be intermingled in the body of the message, or separately at the end?
Example of the former:
"I did a #thing and after doing #AnotherThing I was happy"
Example of the latter: this post 😉
Please boost.

Uh, I'm quite disappointed about this future #Python deprecation: https://blog.miguelgrinberg.com/post/it-s-time-for-a-change-datetime-utcnow-is-now-deprecated
It will break some stuff in a few years when it becomes effective.

#Outlook can't do text search on an opened email. The functionality is not there. So much for an enterprise level software.
-
@FediThing that made me think... What would be a good hashtag for people to share their experience with long-lasting items?
It would be a celebration and recognition of these products, while at the same time work as a purchase recommendation for anyone interested.
Maybe #LongLasting? #BuildToLast? #AntiProgammedObsolescence?

How are you folks dealing nowadays with #dual_boot systems with #Linux and #Windows if you want some data to be shared between the two OSs?

The people from @[email protected] publish talks regularly. I recently saw "Full Domain Functional Bootstrapping Towards Practical Fully Homomorphic Encryption" by Leonard Schild #FHE #TFHE #FDFB #LWE and #RLWE; I like to share it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KuFCYme38g. Yes, there are maths behind and in the slides, but the fundamental concepts can be followed in the explanation without needing to understand the details.

I did a talk at #fosdem23, but unfortunately, the audio from the room (and the video) started at the Q&A. So I've proposed to record an audio track to cover this gap. https://fosdem.org/2023/schedule/event/security_elliptic_curves_in_foss/ It eventually would be the direct video, but until then, I've added a link to a peertube instance https://www.orion-hub.fr/w/6tF4HgfsqYbgmsRN3HqHPP I don't know if it will help, but at least will be better than soundless...

Step by step. First I've work in the continuous integration of #virgl and after some time work also in the CI of #mesa. Due to the work made and to do, I gained the developer chevron in mesa a few weeks a go. Now it is time to explore the #kernel used by #mesa. I'll do my best to make it easy to be as upstream as possible
