  5. “There are other reasons to be bullish about #compute #standardisation. Chips from Nvidia’s Hopper range, which includes the H100, have held much of their rental value even as next-generation Blackwell models entered the market.

This flies in the face of a comment in March 2025 by Jensen Huang, Nvidia’s boss, that “when Blackwell starts shipping in volume, you couldn’t give Hoppers away”. It also suggests that #computed erivatives’ underlying #assets will not suddenly become worthless, the risk of which would slow adoption”

  9. The task given to #NFDI from the federal and state governments: “The NFDI shall set standards in data management.”
Today, 17 experts from all scientific subject areas, took a giant step forward in the workshop “NFDI-RFC Standardisation Concept” at #KIT in Karlsruhe. Here are two of the questions that we discussed:
    * How can we use the #RfC standardisation method for NFDI?
    * How should NFDI adopt and apply standards in RDM?

  28. My favourite simply-typed #functional #programming language was, is, and will always be, #ML#StandardML '97, nowadays.

To my knowledge, SML is the only modern #FP language that has a defined standard with a mathematically sound semantics, due to Milner et al.

In the 1980s and the 1990s, when the #CS and the #IT world were dizzy with #OO, the stewards of SML exercised their judgement with considerable vigour and valour to shun all pretences of OO. This makes the language simpler and lighter, compared to FP-OO hybrid languages like OCaml, F#, and the like.

While SML is by no means a simple language compared to say, C or Python or JavaScript, it is arguably the simplest among the descendants of ML, especially compared to modern Haskell. By "simple" I mean not only to use the language but also to teach it to the undergrad #CS students. ML's immense collection of textbooks and academic papers dating back to the early 1970s unburdens the teacher.

Yet, I usually recommend #OCaml to my clients who want to transition to FP, especially those clients whose "business" is creating large, robust, adaptable, maintainable software in science and engineering. My reasons are manifold, but the main one is that SML'97 is "dated", whereas OCaml is "modern" in all the venerable senses of that word.

Programming language #standardisation is a double-edge blade with a stiletto point. Without standardisation, the semantics of the language is squishy. After standardisation, the language is dead, unless the standard is kept up-to-date, like C, C++, JavaScript, etc. With or without standardisation, language longevity is hazardous, like the piercing point of a stiletto.

In any case, I feel like a traitor to my bloodline.🤦‍♂️

  29. Tomorrow we'll host a webinar on the GNU Name System (GNS) and the road to publishing an RFC.

    Thursday Feb 22, 13.00 CET.

GNS provides a privacy-enhancing alternative to the Domain Name System. It was published as an #rfc. RFC authors Martin Schanzenbach & Bernd Fix will explain GNS and how the RFC process works.
Stephen Farrell advises on working with #standardisation bodies.
The #webinar is open to all. You can find the link to the BBB platform here: nlnet.nl/webinars/

  30. Join the #webinar on the GNU Name System (GNS) and the road to publishing an RFC.
GNS is a decentralized and censorship-resistant domain name resolution protocol providing an alternative to DNS. In 2023 the GNS was published as RFC 9498. The authors of the #RFC Martin Schanzenbach & Bernd Fix will talk about GNS & the road to published an RFC.
Stephen Farrell of Tolerant Networks will talk about getting advice with #standardisation processes.

  31. So a gigabyte is unfortunately a terrible way of measuring bytes because giga* is base10 (1000 bytes/decimal) and bytes are base2(binary) , so the standard was changed to gibibytes because it would be base2 (1024 bytes) but we got so used to the word "gigabyte" (probably because of the metric system) that we still use it to mean base2 despite it technically meaning base10.

Because of that, storage makers advertise their products as gigabytes because it makes it seem bigger than it actually holds (in gibibytes) and it is legally true.

How can society switch to using the word gibibytes so computing data is less confusing and more readable. It probably starts with retraining ourselves to use gibibytes even if it feels weird.

    What are your thoughts?

  32. It's disheartening that 25 years after the Web Standards Project (WaSP) was established, and 10 years after it was shut down with @Aaron's famous "Our work here is done” post, standards still have to be fought for with violence in order to be adopted.

  33. Nothing being properly specified, the cardinality of the different `X-Forwarded-*` headers when used in combination, is also entirely undefined. Which values go with which when several `X-Forwarded-Host` and `X-Forwarded-Proto` are specified, for instance? How do you pair them up? Who knows! 🤷🏽‍♂️

However, the most important problem is that these headers impose a large security and privacy risk. Not having a common, evolving specification in which these security and privacy risks are discussed, and mitigated, is a major threat to the security of server infrastructure and the privacy of the users of that infrastructure.

  34. It’s sad to see Microsoft Azure reenforcing the entrenchment of the non-standard, unspecified, buggy and insecure `X-Forwarded-*` headers:

    learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azur

…instead of the standard `Forwarded` header specified in RFC 7239:

    rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc7239.htm

What's the problem with the `X-Forwarded-*` headers, you may ask? Well, for starters, there isn’t a specification in existence that tells implementers what to expect of their contents.

There's sort of a least common multiple of allowed values adhering to a sort of familiar HTTP header syntax, but no specification laying out "this is supported, period" exists. This is an interoperability nightmare in itself. Should the headers support one or multiple values? Who knows! 🤷🏽‍♂️
