My partner brought back some #sunscreen from a trip to #Greece. I was looking at the directions on it, and they're quite a bit different from what I'm used to on North American brands. They included this:
> Apply at least 2 mg per cm^2 of skin.
My first thought was "You have GOT to be fucking with me."

TIL some interesting things about the metric system…
1. Over centuries there were multiple attempts at standardizing a measurements system. France pulled it off during the French Revolution. Two chemists (husband and wife) devised it.
2. The base units were built to be realisable. Meaning based on and provable with nature.
3. The meter was realisable as one ten-millionth of the distance between the North Pole and the equator. Later is was converted to 1/299,792,458 of light speed per second.
Bonus: Marie-Anne Paulze Lavoisier is one of the two aforementioned chemists. She was instrumental in the standardization of the scientific method.

Current Calendar is like the American metric system.
Complicated for no reason 🤡This is the International Fixed Calendar.

For everyone outside the U.S., five feet is 1.5 meters, :)

🚨 ALERT: #Groundbreaking revelation! 🎉 Points aren't consistent! Who knew? Two apps, two point sizes—what a shocker! 🙄 If only someone had invented a consistent measuring system! Oh wait, they did. It's called the metric system. 😂

A few inches is still a couple of centimeters.

I actually hear my (Dutch) child now discuss milliards, as if they were billions, since he heard about this from US based news sources. He doesn't even know there is a difference.
This needs to be standardized, because this will lead to confusion.
Once again the US forcing false measures on the rest of the world. :-P

@signs One of my coworkers stomped into work one April morning, angry at a radio show announcement and declaring he would never give up *his* clocks for new ones with 100 minutes in an hour.
"Um, Grant? Do you know what day this is?"

In another sign of how stupid this #timeline has become, apparently #centibillionaire has come to mean more than 100 billion dollars instead if the correct #hekabillionaire. #Murica taking the L on the #MetricSystem. Again!

I wish altbot had a sibling, unitbot maybe?
So when a barbarian informs that: "I caught a fish 3.5 lengths-of-a-bodypart long!11", then civilized people could ask the bot to please translate. 🙂
Many posts here start good, but then gets weird with units (and I'm sure it works both ways). The post is not quite interesting enough to start actively wondering how to perform the conversion by myself, and so the mild interest turns into mild frustration.

Good morning. 😴⏰☕

Wow—it's in the 60s this morning. My phone says 69°F, my computer says 66°F. Both are, of course, Fahrenheit readings, because for some reason the metric system never quite took root here in the United States—except in scientific circles, where logic still occasionally prevails.
Honestly, it wouldn’t surprise me if someone tried to ban the metric system outright for being “un-American.” (That’s sarcasm, in case it wasn’t obvious.) It’s the same kind of thinking that leads to renaming international geographic features by royal decree—pointless and performative.
But maybe that’s the point. In a time when up equals down, light equals dark, and absurdity passes for virtue, it’s clear the lunatics have taken over the asylum.
“Tell people there's an invisible man in the sky who created the universe, and the vast majority will believe you. Tell them the paint is wet, and they have to touch it to be sure.” - George Carlin

Still find it funny how the United States hasn't adopted the metric system... but...

As a USian, I date the earliest modern sign that we were determined to destroy ourselves to 1975, when we rejected conversion to the metric system.

The Metre Convention: a milestone that's changed modern life immeasurably.
This week marked the 150th anniversary of the Metre Convention, signed in Paris on 20 May, 1875 by 17 nations eager to bring order to a chaotic patchwork of global measurements.
The treaty established a universal system of units – ushering in consistency, accuracy, and international cooperation in science, industry and daily life.
