An old professor's epigram, tested against the monuments, the forts, the flag, a Supreme Court ruling from this spring, and the counterfeit history of emancipation now spreading online. An old history professor of mine once offered a sentence that has outlasted most of what I learned in his classroom. The South lost the battle, he said, and won the war. He meant that the Confederacy was more alive in the present than it had been on the April morning when Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox. The claim sounded like provocation at the time. It reads now like a weather report. Army forts carry the names of men who took up arms against the United States. The Supreme Court has just rewritten the rules that protected Black voters in the states most determined to suppress them. A battle flag the rebel armies never managed to carry into Washington was paraded through the Capitol in 2021. My professor's epigram deserves a hearing, and it deserves a harder examination than its admirers usually give it, because one half of it is true in a way that should alarm anyone who wants a working democracy, and the other half is false in a way that can disarm the people who would defend one. #FunFact #OTD 1776 the Continental Congress had declared Friday, May 17, 1776, as a national day of “Humiliation, Fasting and Prayer” the proclamation specifically referenced seeking forgiveness in the "merits and mediation of Jefus Chrift".
The text drafted by a New Jersey delegate stated “it becomes the indispensable duty of these hitherto free and happy colonies, with true penitence of heart, and the most reverent devotion, publickly to acknowledge the over ruling providence of God.”
While proposed by a New Jersey delegate, in Massachusetts numerous copies were printed for distribution to every congregation, replacing the British “God Save the King” with “God Save This People.”
Congress was framing the war as a divine test, asking for aid of the Lord, and believing national repentance could secure God’s protection. This reflected the covenant theology common among New England clergy: nations prosper or suffer according to their obedience to God.
George Washington himself apparently observed the proclamation, enforcing strict troop observance as colonialists were urged to humbly #confess sins, and #repent amidst the surging Revolutionary war movement. Efforts were made to ensure the American colonials spent time engaged in seeking God’s assistance in the quest for #liberty from the British #monarchy.
The British, who'd soon ban the slave trade, generally refrained from authoritatively affiliating with God, or claiming religious right to their colonies, while American revolutionaries heavily used #Christian rhetoric to justify resistance. #Colonialists invoked God as an ally in their quest for territorial independence, oft found ways to interpret bible passages as justification to continue importing and owning #slaves.

There is absolutely no reason to trust US statements in any way, not even head counts. If anything the working assumption should be that, unless and until otherwise identified, they are all US citizens guilty of no crime. This situation is reprehensible regardless of their actual nationalities, and compounded by the regimes actions in court we shouldn't at all dismiss the possibility that the US has gleefully deported it's own citizens, and sold them into slavery

In the history of the #revolts against #slavery, enslaved #women must not be reduced to the role of passive victims of colonial violence. This is particularly evident in the case of Carlota #Lucumí, who heroically defended herself against her oppressors with a machete in her hand and is still considered a revolutionary #symbol of Cuba today.
Long before the Cuban Revolution, the so-called #Triunvirato #Revolution shaped the history of the island, during which numerous #slaves rose up against their owners. It was a large movement that took hold of several plantations. For once, the rebellion was led by a woman who is now revered as a hero and #resistance fighter in #Cuba: #Carlota.
