  3. This tiny, blue #octopus is new to science
Nearly 1,800m beneath surface of #Pacific, an ROV was creeping along slope of a #Galápagos seamount when its camera caught a tiny, dark blue octopus perched in sediment — an animal no human had seen before.
Researchers have named species Microeledone galapagensis. Small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, it is also fully grown — a combination that may help it reproduce faster than larger relatives.

  13. Given a choice between a complex, difficult-to-understand, disconcerting explanation and a simplistic, comforting one, many prefer simplistic comfort if it's remotely plausible, especially if it involves blaming someone else for their problems.

The Galapagos Bullhead Shark, a small and elusive species endemic to the Galápagos Islands, primarily inhabits rocky reefs and prefers cold waters rich in nutrients. Notably nocturnal, it forages for small invertebrates at night. This species, described in 1840, remains under-researched despite its unique ecological role in the region.

  24. Knowledge gained through experience of plants and animals is not an inferior substitute for proper scientific knowledge; it is the real thing. Direct experience is the only way to build up an understanding that is not only intellectual but intuitive and practical, involving the senses and the heart as well as the rational mind. Scientific investigations can illuminate and enrich this direct practical knowledge, but they are no substitute for it; indeed, they depend on it themselves.

  29. The current search for new educational funnels must be reversed into the search for their institutional inverse: educational webs which heighten the opportunity for each one to transform each moment of his living into one of learning, sharing, and caring. We hope to contribute concepts needed by those who conduct such counterfoil research on education—and also to those who seek alternatives to other established service industries.
