The Farmer’s Word: Winona LaDuke, a False Etymology, and the True Root of “Colonization”
A reader sent me a video clip. In it, Winona LaDuke opens a talk on colonization by reaching for the dictionary, and the first thing she says is wrong. LaDuke is Anishinaabe, from White Earth in northern Minnesota. She trained as an economist, ran twice for vice president on the Green Party ticket, wrote All Our Relations, and has spent four decades on wild rice, pipelines, and land recovery. Rooms fill when she speaks. So when she tells an audience that colonization "has the same root as the word colon" and that the root "means to digest," that line travels. It is vivid, it is anatomical, it is easy to repeat, and it is the sentence people carry home. It is also folklore. This is a claim about the history of a word; no lexicon supports it, and it collapses the moment anyone opens a Greek dictionary. The rest of her argument is largely sound and in places understated. That is exactly why the false root matters. An argument this strong should not be walking around with a demolition charge strapped to its opening line. […] -

Today was mainly a work day for the students- and for me-
I got the bombarder table in place, and the bombarder coil wired into the tiny, very short trolley line system. I do hope they are able to lengthen it one day by suspending the aluminum frame from the roof.

The turquoise tube is for Tommy's Diner. I am gonna ride my bike to the studio, grab the neon and walk over to the diner to meet my students for breakfast, coffee and a neon install demo at the diner. FUN!
Tomorrow the students will bombard- everyone has done it once or twice now, some students are amassing a few tubes to be bombarded and filled.
I hope they get to make more tomorrow and am really excited about some of their designs. Its been fun teaching the first weeks #class here at Columbus Glass Art Center. Here are my whiteboard drawings for how a variety of bombarder/ choke systems are wired, and how the neon torches work.
Katie, my amazing scientific glassmaking TA is upgrading the pump arm. She was going to do more, but the art center has not gotten the usual grants, so no funds for glass valves. We will just make do with what we have :).
I just hooked the manifold up to the vacuum pump and have it sucking down overnight. I believe we have hermeticity. It looks like the neon pump line is looking good. We repainted and resurfaced the pump table to make mercury spills super obvious. They couldn't afford the $225 worth of glass and machined teflon for the dribble proof, retractable mercury injector that Katie could make. I guess stainless steel and glass syringe it is... and the big bucket of mercury absorbent powder.
Next weeks bending class has space in it if your interested.
