There is a recent agronomic article that makes this case...

The conclusion as I recall was: we would save or generate much more power by putting the same acreage to use for solar. This is not desirable (IMO) on such a large scale, but the point is a good one. No reason not to start.

There are other proposals for "dual cropping" with #solar providing partial shade for crops that need it.

Then there is the obvious dual land use of putting solar over #parkinglots. Keeping our vehicles out of the sun and rain would be win-win! 🙂

I think the State of #California has already started to cover their miles of #aqueducts with solar. Again #dualuse since the shade cuts down on water loss thru evaporation. 💧

So much to do. So much that can be done once we make the societal paradigm shift. 👍

Just realised that installing #solar panels as roofs over motorways and railways would not only aid in climate protection, but might actually be a #DualUse technology.

In #Ukraine, russian drones have proven to be a grave threat to anyone moving across open spaces, so – as far as I have heard – some roads are now protected by giant anti-drone nets.

Perhaps photovoltaic roofs would make it quicker to install such protections and would aid in concealing movement of refugees and troops? #PV

The imprecision in these proposals is appalling. Chatbots and language models can be goaded into saying bad things. When they’re used by billions of people, even the most cautious developers cannot exclude that risk. Criminalizing their development based on whether they generate any proscribed content (per sec. 1) is a garish attack on fundamental research and consumer technology.

Governments can uplevel AI safety in many ways, some of which are represented in this bill. But this kind of theatrical overreach is setting back meaningful reform.
