The Forgotten Odyssey: Greeks in the Heart of Asia
"This article offers a window into the deep historical ties between Greece and Central Asia. It discusses how Alexander the Great worked to create a hybrid Greco-Central Asian culture through military conquest, strategic marriages, and the founding of cities."

I got a little stand to hold my phone to take a picture - it works well - despite the results here - this is a well circulated 2011 Australian dollar coin - but definitely easier than hand-holding the phone (Photographed on the tea towel just because it was there and looked a more interesting background than the bench).
What are your coin photography tips?

Ok #MysteryCoin fans, it's nearly #Newsletter time, so let's have a last look at this fortnight's #Coin.
A little less for you on this one than last time - 10.... in a great serif font! With a word underneath, and some interesting leaves and berries around the edge. But who issued it, and when? And from a series of coins which used broadly similar designs, why did I go with this one? It's not the lowest denomination... nor the highest, but there IS something about this one...

Today is the feast of the Assumption of Mary - and since I almost got it wrong, here's a quick clarification of ascension vs assumption:
Ascension: Refers to Jesus Christ going up to heaven by His own divine power.
Assumption: Refers to Mary being taken up to heaven by the grace and power of God.

So here is a "Miraculous medal - full info on that here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miraculous_Medal

It is the start of St Michael's Lent, a 40-day period of prayer from August 15 (the Feast of the Assumption) to September 29 (the Feast of St. Michael & the Archangels). I am doing the Exodus 90 program with my church men's group, which I recommend: https://exodus90.com/st-michaels-lent/
There are St Michael's Lent programs for all though!
To the #medallion, or at least that's what I called this similar-shaped Armor of #God piece: https://coinofnote.com/armor-of-god-medallion/ it features St Michael:
"often represented as an angelic warrior, fully armed with helmet, sword, and shield, as he overcomes Satan, sometimes represented as a dragon and sometimes as a man-like figure. The shield at times bears the inscription: Quis ut Deus, the translation of the archangel's name, but capable also of being seen as his rhetorical and scornful question to Satan": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quis_ut_Deus%3F

For those with an interest in ancient Egyptian history (and who doesn't?!), you may know of the Ptolemaic kingdom, an ancient Greek royal dynasty based in Egypt during the Hellenistic period. Founded in 305 BCE by Ptolemy I Soter, a general of Alexander the Great, it lasted nearly 300 years until the death of Cleopatra VII in 30 BCE: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ptolemaic_Kingdom
William E. Daehn has written a new book: Historical and Numismatic Timeline of the Ptolemaic Empire which looks quite interesting (though doesn't appear to be available outside the US yet). See this article in E-Sylum: https://www.coinbooks.org/v29/esylum_v29n32.html#article5

This Morini-type stater bears a horse so abstracted its legs dissolve into jagged strokes, while the reverse remains eerily blank. The crude engraving suggests haste—perhaps struck by fleeing hands under threat.
What does the absence of a chariot reveal about the urgency of its makers?

Recent #numismatic #news has been dominated by the European Central Bank's survey on proposed new euro #Banknote designs. But they aren't the only ones looking to update their notes. The government of #India has authorised the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to print an initial batch of 2 billion #polymer #banknotes for field trials, the government informed Parliament on Monday.
The RBI has recently floated a tender to procure material for polymer banknotes, reviving a proposal that has been under consideration for nearly two decades.More: https://www.coinbooks.org/v29/esylum_v29n31.html#article21

From the "Trad West" page on Facebook:
"More than thirteen centuries ago, Byzantine Emperor Justinian II made a revolutionary change to imperial coinage: he placed the image of Jesus Christ on the principal face of the gold solidus, where the emperor’s portrait had traditionally appeared.
Minted in Constantinople around 692–695, the coin depicts Christ facing forward, with long hair and a beard, a cross behind His head, one hand raised in blessing and the Book of the Gospels in the other. The inscription identifies Him as Jesus Christ, King of those who reign.
Justinian appears on the reverse and identifies himself as the servant of Christ. The arrangement proclaimed that the emperor was not the highest authority: above every earthly ruler stood Jesus Christ, the true King of Kings."

So I'm not sure if I'm allowed to vote on the new Euro banknote designs (being not actually in Europe), so here's my unofficial vote:
H
J
I
B
D
C
F
G
A
EI do like the bird / city designs. Some of the designs are quite clever overall, and I certainly don't hate the lower ranked ones. The reason I liked H is because the design, but also it is a lot of solid colour, which makes them easier to distinguish, but also a little gradient in each note as well so they do have visual interest
Here is a handy overview of all the designs: https://www.ecb.europa.eu/euro/banknotes/future_banknotes/html/all-design-proposals.en.html

From this week's E-Sylum: " New Semiquincentennial Medal Commemorates the First Submarine Used in Combat"
https://www.coinbooks.org/v29/esylum_v29n30.html#article22
The first submarine used in combat was the US Revolutionary War submarine Turtle. A new medal honoring the Turtle has been created by Jim Licaretz.
And if you like submarine history, I wrote some, and shared some links in writing up the "2014 Centenary of Military Aviation & Submarines PNC":

Happy third birthday to the first post on the site! Posted on the 24th July 2023. It is about a medallion of Saint Eligius: the patron saint of numismatics! Very fitting. The post itself is short, only 116 words if you include the title. The image description for the three images is longer! (at 128 words): https://coinofnote.com/saint-eligius-medallion/
The other post I have on the site about Saint Eligius has a little more on our patron: https://coinofnote.com/saint-eligius/

Ok since I was a day behind yesterday, let's stick with that - here's a #TokenTuesday piece! (whatever day it happens to be for you).
TV Game Use, looks like: https://en.numista.com/534571 this one has 44 counterstamped on it. I had made a note to myself:
From Numista thread: https://en.numista.com/forum/topic97255.html China game token.
代用币:Token Before year 2000,play video games through the TV screen, so it's also called TV Game. - that thread has a couple of other variants.
Does anyone have any more info on these please?

Ok who needs some #MondayMotivation? Even those of us for whom it is already Tuesday? Here are two #MondayMedal pieces you can take your pick from:
A) I can do it!
or, if jumping between cliffs seems a bit much for this early in the week, how about:
B) Self-care is essential.
Are you team A) or B) today? I'm going for A (but with B in my back pocket just in case)

I am a fan of fonts, and it's not often they cause too much controversy in the numismatic world. But we're at one of those points!
The National Bank of Ukraine said on July 15 that it will change the lettering on its planned Hr 2,000 banknote after public backlash that the inscription too closely resembled a Russian typeface.

This piece is nicely tactile, and has one of my favourite bible verses - indeed a favourite of many people: The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want, from Psalm 23.

On a white sandy beach along the Seto Inland Sea, a giant sand sculpture depicting an ancient coin emerges from behind a pine forest.
The giant coin art has a circumference of 345 meters, a major axis of 122 meters and a minor axis of 90 meters. The sand mounds forming the characters stand over 2 meters high. When was such a big artwork created? By whom? And for what purpose?
The sculpture is considered one of Kagawa's mysteries, as there is no established theory that answers these questions.
And I'll add my own question: Is this the largest coin representation on the planet? And if not this, what is?

When you hear "Gaza", it's easy to only think of the modern context. In fact, Gaza city has been inhabited since at least the 15th century BC.

Why thousands of Roman coin hoards were never recovered, new study reveals
Before metal detectors and archaeologists found them, thousands of Roman coin hoards vanished beneath the ground. Many were buried with every sign of being temporary hiding places. Their owners never came back. A new study argues those missing owners were often caught in the middle of war, invasion, or disaster...

I posted an erroneous Saint Benedict medallion the other day. Here is a better example.
The Saint Benedict Medallion is a traditional Catholic sacramental used for spiritual protection, warding off evil, and seeking physical or inner healing. Believers carry, wear, or place the medal in their homes to invite God's peace and as an outward reminder to resist temptation
The phrase around the saint reads ""May we be strengthened by his presence in the hour of our death""
The text in the book translates to: "The Cross of the Holy Father Benedict". The initials for this, CSPB are in the reverse between the arms of the cross.
On the reverse, PAX means peace.
VRSNSMV is ""Begone Satan! Never tempt me with your vanities!""
SMQLIVB is "What you offer me is evil. Drink the poison yourself!"On the cross, CSSML is ""May the Holy Cross be my light." and NDSMD is "Let not the dragon be my guide".

Here's a uniface medallion, which I believe is an Icon of the (Pokrov) Intercession of the Theotokos (Virgin Mary, the Mother of God) holding an omophorion (veil) surrounded by angels.
Google suggests the text is in Church Slavonic and is a prayer for Mary's intercession, but the characters don't seem to match, so I was wondering if anyone can tell me what the text is please?
