Durch das fortdauernde Überschreiten planetarer Grenzen ist die menschliche Zivilisation in eine zunehmend chaotische Phase eingetreten und nähert sich einem Scheideweg. Ähnlich wie zur Zeit der Kopernikanischen Wende im 16. Jahrhundert, als das geozentrische Weltbild zunehmend unhaltbar wurde, ist das heute weltbeherrschende reduktionistische sozioökonomische Paradigma dabei, an seinen eigenen Widersprüchen zu zerschellen. In nicht allzu ferner Zukunft entscheidet sich, ob die Zivilisation kollabiert oder in einen dem Erdsystem und dem allgemeinen Wohlergehen angemesseneren Zustand wechselt.

In dieser chaotischen Zeit können auch kleine Handlungen große Wirkung haben und Ideen materielle Wirkungskraft entfalten, frei nach Ilya #Prigogine, einem Pionier der Erforschung komplexer dynamischer Systeme: "Wenn sich ein System fernab des Gleichgewichts befindet, können kleine Inseln der Kohärenz in einem Meer des Chaos das gesamte System auf eine höhere Ordnung heben." #DonellaMeadows, ebenfalls Pionierin auf diesem Gebiet und Co-Autorin der Studie #GrenzenDesWachstums, hat in ihrem posthum veröffentlichten Werk "Die Grenzen des Denkens" (im Original treffender: #ThinkingInSystems) zwölf Hebelpunkte identifiziert, mit denen in Systeme eingegriffen werden kann, und diese nach ihrer Wirksamkeit sortiert. Die wirksamsten – aber auch am schwersten umzusetzenden – Hebelpunkte sind: Die Ziele eines Systems zu verändern und, die Paradigmen zu verändern, aus denen heraus die Ziele des Systems gesetzt wurden und sich kontinuierlich reproduzieren. Auf Grundlage dieser Erkenntnisse betrachtet Lent sozial-ökologische Bestrebungen auf der Ebene von drei Horizonten:

- Initiativen, die sich innerhalb von Horizont 1 bewegen, streben nach inkrementellen Verbesserungen innerhalb der bestehenden Institutionen.
- Bestrebungen innerhalb von Horizont 2 tun dies ebenfalls, durchbrechen aber potenziell bestehende Konventionen. Das gilt aber nicht für alle, manche sind nur Scheinlösungen, PR oder werden bei nächstbester Gelegenheit zurückgenommen.
- Einige der Horizont-2-Bestrebungen können jedoch Risse in konventionellen Logiken erzeugen und Wege zu Horizont 3 eröffnen, einem grundlegendem Wandel zu einem neuen Paradigma.

Lent betont, dass alle drei Horizonte wichtig seien, der dritte Horizont bisher aber nur unzureichend in den Blick genommen worden sei. Mit seinem Buch tut er genau dies und bezieht sich dabei auf inspirierende Weise zum einen auf die Fülle der Ideen und Aktivitäten von ökologischen Bewegungen, Projekten, NGOs, Allianzen und Denker:innen der letzten Jahrzehnte und zum anderen auf neuere Forschungen zur Dynamik von sozialen Transformationen.

Maundy Thursday Shadow Sketches

As part of a Service of Shadows for Maundy Thursday April 2, 2026, these sketches were drawn as each “shadow” of Christ’s final hours were read. I had a general idea before hand but for the most part each came together more or less spontaneously during the reading. I used a large flip chart in front of the congregation. As each candle was blown out, I flipped to a new page and once the reading began, started a new sketch. We then created a kind of gallery of the finished shadow sketches in the church.

Measuring Up to Jesus

The other day when I was on Social Media a quote I saw from sales guru hit me: “You become what you think about all day long”. It made me ponder on what I think about every day, which lead me to realize how much my thinking – and lifestyle – has changed over the years.

I used to be more selfish, helping and serving others with the end motive of serving my own needs and ego, and praying for my own needs – talking to God more than listening. St. Francis says [that] it is through giving that we receive, and I took it literal.

Today … when I give of myself I don’t look for what I receive, because the real gift is how God is blessing others through me .. which I may never see. My agenda has become God’s agenda. Said another way, I live my life as a prayer.

If we focus our attention on bad news and gossip, and distractions, we will miss God's incredible, visionary, optimistic purpose for every believer: to grow so much in our faith that we shine like beacons to everyone around us!

God's vision for each church is that we would grow so much in our love for God that we'd love people the way He loves them: unconditionally and passionately.

Another long day of study: manuscript edits this morning, referencing all afternoon, and Lent study tonight. I also had my first session with a new therapist—she seems good, more somatic-focused compared to my previous psychodynamic one. Different energy. I’ve also joined the Christian Union at Deakin. The Bible teaching is brilliant, though socialising is tough with all the noise—I can’t hear well enough to join in.
