  1. Today is the feast day of Saint Dymphna: Patron Saint of Those Who Suffer From Anxiety. Depression. Nervous Disorders. Mental Illness.

Born in Ireland in the 7th century, and by 14 consecrated herself to Christ and took a vow of chastity. When her mother died, her father's mental health declined & she fled to Geel, Belgium where she built a hospital. Her father followed her & killed her.

A church was built in honour of her & so many pilgrims arrived in need of treatment for mental ills, that it was expanded. The expanded sanctuary was eventually overflowing again, leaving the townspeople to accept them into their homes, which began a tradition of care for the mentally ill that continues to this day.

Numista lists one coin, a 100 Ghela, from Belgium, picturing the interior of the church of Saint Dymphna, Geel: en.numista.com/438684

  11. On the edge of the Roman Empire and at the end of it, someone was buried with a purse of coins which has proved to be quite an interesting find: coinbooks.org/v29/esylum_v29n1

Grave A-104, was discovered in the 1960s in one of the late Roman cemeteries linked to the coastal fort of Oudenburg. The small objects once carried in the purse could help explain how people in northwestern Europe adapted after bronze coinage ceased arriving around A.D. 400.

  26. Today is the 100th Birthday of naturalist and broadcaster, Sir David Attenborough: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_At

I think we've likely all seen at least some of the well over 100 documentaries he has made and hopefully appreciate the planet we live on and the amazing variety of life we share it with that little bit more because of the knowledge he has shared.

Here is a 2019 £2 coin featuring the Royal Research Ship (RRS) named in his honour. Image of the coin from Numista:

  36. Michael Zachary has published an updated, second edition of the Ten Cash Commentary book. I have the first edition of this and it is excellent. I now have the second edition in my Amazon cart :) If you are interested in early machine minted Chinese coins, this is an excellent resource. He also has one on the twenty cash coins.
