Roland Rollins has released an updated reference book on "SECURITY FEATURES ON WORLD BANKNOTES 2026". Originally published in 2021, this new edition features 1/3 new features.

The oldest security feature is probably the watermark invented in 1282 by Fabriano, the same paper firm Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo used. Fabriano is still in existence producing new security features. The newest patented device is the TwinColors patch of 2025 by Giesecke & Devrient. All the known features for the last 743 years are included in the new Security Features on World Banknotes, 2026.

U.S. Mint launches special versions of two iconic silver dollars

The U.S. Mint is reissuing two collector favorites: the Morgan silver dollar and the Peace silver dollar.

Beginning at noon EDT Tuesday, Aug. 25, people can place orders on the federal agency’s website when both coins launch at $169 each.

They are composed of 99.9% silver and are part of a series of releases commemorating United States’ 250th anniversary. They, therefore, bear the dual date 1776–2026, and feature a Liberty Bell with the numeral “250.”

I got a little stand to hold my phone to take a picture - it works well - despite the results here - this is a well circulated 2011 Australian dollar coin - but definitely easier than hand-holding the phone (Photographed on the tea towel just because it was there and looked a more interesting background than the bench).

Recent #numismatic #news has been dominated by the European Central Bank's survey on proposed new euro #Banknote designs. But they aren't the only ones looking to update their notes. The government of #India has authorised the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to print an initial batch of 2 billion #polymer #banknotes for field trials, the government informed Parliament on Monday.
The RBI has recently floated a tender to procure material for polymer banknotes, reviving a proposal that has been under consideration for nearly two decades.

"More than thirteen centuries ago, Byzantine Emperor Justinian II made a revolutionary change to imperial coinage: he placed the image of Jesus Christ on the principal face of the gold solidus, where the emperor’s portrait had traditionally appeared.

Minted in Constantinople around 692–695, the coin depicts Christ facing forward, with long hair and a beard, a cross behind His head, one hand raised in blessing and the Book of the Gospels in the other. The inscription identifies Him as Jesus Christ, King of those who reign.

Justinian appears on the reverse and identifies himself as the servant of Christ. The arrangement proclaimed that the emperor was not the highest authority: above every earthly ruler stood Jesus Christ, the true King of Kings."

On a white sandy beach along the Seto Inland Sea, a giant sand sculp­ture depict­ing an ancient coin emerges from behind a pine forest.

The giant coin art has a cir­cum­fer­ence of 345 meters, a major axis of 122 meters and a minor axis of 90 meters. The sand mounds form­ing the char­ac­ters stand over 2 meters high. When was such a big art­work cre­ated? By whom? And for what pur­pose?

The sculp­ture is con­sidered one of Kagawa's mys­ter­ies, as there is no estab­lished the­ory that answers these ques­tions.

And I'll add my own question: Is this the largest coin representation on the planet? And if not this, what is?

I have bought quite a few #Christian themed coins off places like Temu - but you do need to be careful. Many now are designed with AI and nonsensical text, some are downright heretical, and some, like this one, just have random errors. Here is Jesus with sheep, which neatly fits the text from John 10:11 which accompanies it "I am the good shepherd, who lays down his life for his sheep" - all correct so far.... so why the attribution to Revelation 5:5? That passage reads: "5 Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”... Not QUITE the same meaning...

It's halfway day of 2026: At Midday on 2nd July, we're 182.5 days into the year with 182.5 days to go. To celebrate, I thought I'd find a "halfway" coin to share. Here's one:

a "HALF" Sol from Peru. Issued 1935 - 1965 so 15 years either side of halfway through the century - Mine was issued in 1944 (just over halfway towards halfway through it's run? Maybe that's stretching it a bit).
