"For more than two decades, #PJLibrary has mailed free #Jewish #childrensbooks to families around the world. Today, it distributes roughly 670,000 #books monthly in more than 40 countries. According to #AlisaKoyrakh, the organization’s director of books, those stories have historically reflected a familiar slice of Jewish life.
“There are just a lot of #Ashkenormative #stories out there—a lot of stories about #Yiddish, the #LowerEastSide and immigration from Eastern #Europe,” #Koyrakh said. “Those are all really important stories. But we saw gaps. It was kind of obvious.”
The #Sephardic Stories Initiative intends to fill those gaps, bringing together Sephardic and #Mizrahi #writers for a year of workshops, editorial mentorship and critique from their peers."

fuck yes -- YIVO's new United Hebrew Trades collection still yielding some real gems. this is an ad in the back of the UHT's 40th anniversary journal (1928). Benjamin Greenberg (1882–1944) was, like Joseph Moskowitz, born in Galați Romania and apparently followed in his cimbalist-restaurateur footsteps.

In 1979, artists occupied a city-owned building in Loisaida to protest policies gutting the neighborhood. The city offered them 156 Rivington Street. After eviction threats and a decade without a building, ABC No Rio broke ground in July 2024. Back in fall 2026, owning it outright.

having been adding to this tally over morning coffee most days since this, and so far I'm at 165 Jewish musicians who lived along this strip ~1910-25, of which ~45 are known klezmer musicians and ~55 are Progressive Musical Benevolent Society members. (the organization's office was right here.) so really if there were likely many hundreds or low thousands of klezmer musicians (?) in NYC in that era, it's not at all the majority of them.

After getting confused by multiple appearances in directories I realized there were two Harry Loigsaltzes ... one being Harry Lubin👇

trying to just follow my curiosity for my summer research without any particular goal, and I'm intrigued how many klezmer musicians lived on this two block stretch of East 2nd St in Manhattan during the 1910s-20s. I've counted about 90 so far and now poking around in the 1915 census to see who else.

The Department of Homeless Services has a policy called “Code Blue” for winter nights when the temperature drops to 32 degrees or below, including wind-chill, between 4:00 PM and 8:00 AM.
What Changes When #CodeBlue is in Effect?
On these nights, Department of Homeless Services policies are relaxed to ensure everyone is warm and safe. This includes:
- Drop-in centers are required to take as many clients as possible, within the Department of Buildings restrictions.
- Anyone in need of a place to go can walk into single adult or family shelters, without undergoing typical intake and eligibility procedures, for the night in question.
- Clients can access any shelter, not just their assigned shelter, for the night in question.
- More outreach teams will be on the streets to offer services and shelter.
- No shelter suspensions or sanctions can be carried out on these dates. Clients who have been sanctioned can return to the shelter for the night in question, if necessary."Read more:

In those 1940s tax photos they stopped to try and centre the shot on every single address so you can often get many views of the same spot angled and lit differently. This is roughly around the same spot as the Blanks' store on E 2nd St but also Evenchick's shop at 188 E 2nd and possibly another one. By 1940 the founder Israel Evenchick had passed away and his sons were running it, but Shimele Blank was still alive & presumably running his shop.

"Filling in the Blanks" on my Progressive Musical Benevolent Society research about the Blanks/Blankleders family of musicians. There were about 10 of them in the P.M.B.S., most related to Shimele Blank AKA Yankel Blankleder, a klezmer violinist who owned this music shop at 190 East 2nd Street.
