Berkeley Animal Rights Center has run a public organizing space in Berkeley since 2016, office, campaign shop, and weekly meetups in one storefront. In November 2024, Berkeley became the first US city to ban factory farms. Voters passed it at 62%. ARC was part of that work.

Gainesville's Civic Media Center has been open since 1993. Volunteer-run, no institutional funding. Thousands of radical texts, the Stetson Kennedy archive, and the largest independent zine collection in the southeastern US. Their line: information is power, and access to that power is political.

Volunteer-run, no bosses, no staff. MKZ is a vegan community kitchen in Amsterdam operating inside the Binnenpret, a complex squatted in 1984 and one of the oldest autonomous spaces in Western Europe. Three-course meal, ~5 euros, profits go to grassroots causes the volunteers choose.

When Algeria privatized bookshops in the 1990s, six employees collectively bought this one. They kept it open during the civil war despite death threats. Today it remains a key space for political and literary life.
