Watched The #FantasticFour: First Steps last night. After the super-entertaining #Thunderbolts, my expectations for the #MCU were a bit higher again.

Unfortunately, I found this one to be a bit boring. While the look was slick and Galactus is a great villain, the whole story felt not very exciting. I never felt like anything was really at stake. But the worst part was that while the threat of Galactus was built up nicely, the character was completely devalued in the showdown. The cosmic threat turned into a big dude walking through the streets. Silly and sad!

Let's see if #Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars can still deliver.

+ not bogged down by lore
+ good chemistry
+ lovely retrofuturistic aesthetic

Negatives:

- seemed generic in some ways
- stretched disbelief even for a superhero film
- little underbaked/rushed
- dull villain
- iffy motherhood plot
- global scale, extremely American tone
- related: two major plot points
- bunch of minor ones I noticed that didn't bug me

So. I saw the new Fantastic Four.

Honestly, not bad, but not exactly a classic (as a movie or as a Marvel movie). About Ms Marvel level - a smidge more generic but also more charming.

Back to basics, a bit by numbers (in a general sense, not MCU-by-numbers as such, but breezy and fun.

I guess overall I enjoyed it and liked it even though I've more negatives to note than positives?

Oh, that's funny, I didn't know Walter Simonson (and Sal Buscema) originally came up with the comical Time Variance Authority bureaucracy (that was used in the TV series Loki) for Thor and then Simonson's excellent run on Fantastic Four (issues 335-354). I guess I assumed the TVA went back further than 1986.
