There was an uber-serious question posed in ex-punk rock circles back in the day: “who was greater . . . #TheVelvetUnderground or #TheStooges?” Now I'm guessing if Men & Volts heard this, they would’ve responded by gleefully shouting “#CaptainBeefheart!” Indeed M&V once worked up an entire set of Beefheart covers, even playing them live to Boston’s befuddled underground music types a few times in 1979. If you’re a lifelong fan of the Magic Band you probably already know about this lo-fi archival wonder. But everyone else? Get your priorities straight and start digging this as much as I do.
