I was bullied to join the Ukrainian Folk Orchestra in Strathcona😵🇺🇦 their tsymbaly is ROUGH it hasn't been played in 20 years and all 130 strings were a full tone flat🥲 after being tuned three times it was passable, but I'm not sure it'll ever keep in tune well

I was looking for upcoming concerts in the area, and was saddened to see a January 20th concert at Ram's Head in Annapolis billed as "Celebrating the Life of Maggie Sansone". https://www.ramsheadonstage.com/events/detail/1255599
Apparently she passed away in November from Parkinson's.
Sansone played the hammered dulcimer and started a music label for folk and Celtic music. She also was a regular at the Maryland Renaissance Festival for several years. Here's a 19-minute performance from 2016:

Gladys Andreas, who I met when I first moved here in 2009 but never got to know well, was kind of like an ambassador for the tsymbaly (Ukrainian hammered dulcimer) in the lower mainland. she used to teach the instrument in Surrey in the 90s, I think, I've occasionally come across people who took lessons with her. RIP

I've been deleting my tracks off of Soundcloud and wanted to share this track one last time, even tho it's kind of cringe-y and I hear all the mistakes. But it's also kind of nice to hear how much I've improved since then.

Flying to the US today, weather permitting 🫣 not a great day for it politically. I tried my best to wrap my cheapest functional dulcimer and will beg to bring it carry on but not expecting to (it's almost double the length of allowed musical instruments). Hoping it's not pulverised by a thoughtless luggage handler 🤞😵
