"Growing up, most “#Jewish #music” classes I encountered were basically a teacher standing at the front of the room saying, “#BobDylan is Jewish,” then playing a Bob Dylan song. Then: “#CaroleKing is Jewish,” followed by a Carole King song. And so on for 45 minutes. People always seemed to enjoy it, but I’d leave wondering: OK, this person happened to be Jewish — but what’s Jewish about the art?
So, I started asking people: What is #Jewishmusic?
I heard every possible answer. Anything in #Hebrew. Anything from #Israel. Music based on the #Torah. #GeorgeGershwin. #LeonardCohen. A #Jew playing music.
Each answer contained some truth, but none felt complete."

interesting autobiographical music project in #Limerick by a friend, #klezmer #violinist Anna Lowenstein.
"Two sound worlds shaped Anna's musical blueprint: through one wall came Hasidic prayer, and through the other, her father's string quartet rehearsals. Anna’s knowledge and experience of traditional Yiddish instrumental music is explored through original melodies and her love for the classical string quartet."

Another of Kandel's #78rpm #klezmer repertoire that is somewhat unique. Aside from the opening prelude, the melody is a well known #CrimeanTatar folk dance Qaytarma (also recorded by other klezmers, such as Naftule Brandwein), somewhat klezmerized into a 3/8 hora pattern instead of Tatar 9/8 or 7/8 for this dance. The title "A Turkish Wedding" is pure orientalism😅

The daughter of oud-player Sol Basha, Madrid-based Regine Basha is an artist, curator, story-teller and founder of the project Tuning Baghdad. This is an audio-visual archive of music and stories recalling Regine’s Iraqi-Jewish upbringing, her father´s deep relationship to Arabic music and the lost Jewish performers of Iraqi Maqam. Posted on fb by Binyomin Ginzberg - a #Chassidic #nigun printed to be read from right to left🧐 his note: "This example is from Geshuri's 'LaChasidim Mizmor'."
not unheard of I think but not common either -- my friend and I were trying to prepare a zoom lecture during early covid and looked for an example like this and couldn't find one at the time.

"What happened to #Yiddish #theater, how it came to be, why it faded and how it made a comeback are among the questions explored in “Immigrant Songs: #YiddishTheater and the #American #Jewish Experience,” a #documentary #directed by #JeffJaneczko.
The 46-minute documentary, the first produced by the #MilkenArchive of #JewishMusic (where #Janeczko is a curator), traces the remarkable legacy of Yiddish theater in #America — from its Eastern #European roots to its extraordinary modern revival. The #film blends #archivalfootage, original #music and scholarly insight to bring to life a cultural legacy that continues to resonate today.
You don’t need to be a Yiddish speaker or come from an #Ashkenazi background to appreciate the charm of Yiddish music and theater. The two, in fact, are deeply intertwined and have gone hand in hand since their birth in Eastern Europe."

Portland OR folks, check out my friend Zoë Aqua's upcoming show with her band marrying klezmer and Transylvanian fiddle music. their album was one of my faves of last year.

in case you missed it, an excellent #klezmer trio livestreamed from the Center for Jewish History last night. including Andy Statman, who studied under Dave Tarras back in the day.

A thread of recent #klezmer albums worth checking out – Jake Shulman-Ment and Abigale Reisman's "Two Strings." Two of the top klez fiddlers of the US East Coast, IMO this collaboration displays their love of crunchy string ensemble rhythms, baroque melodies and nigunim.

A thread of recent #klezmer albums worth checking out –
Zoë Aqua's "In a Sea of Stars" recorded in two Romanian synagogues during a recent tour. Like a fusion of klezmer and Transylvanian fiddle music, the logical result of her several years of field work in the region.

"Beyond Joseph Moskowitz" .. I started writing this post in Brooklyn back in April, but I soon realized it would be a lot of work and would be a distraction from my archival research. But now that I've been back I've had time to finish researching it and typing it up. A look at some of the better and lesser known Jewish cimbalom players from the directories of A.F.M. local 802, 1922-50. A truly niche deep dive for my own interest!

glad this is coming together; a year ago when I was in NYC Pete Rushefsky met me and was telling me a trove of handwritten scores from cimbalom player Joseph Moskowitz had been uncovered in DC. I'll probably speak at this zoom about the old NY klezmer characters who appear in these scores.
