Was googling the New York Jewish musician Matus Lichtenstein (c.1865–1940) whose name came up in my research and I found this 1928 recording I'd never heard before by his Matus Lichtenstein's Kunst Orkester. Interesting. Sort of #klezmer, sort of #Hasidic #nigunim played in a mainstream orchestral style.

Another of Kandel's #78rpm #klezmer repertoire that is somewhat unique. Aside from the opening prelude, the melody is a well known #CrimeanTatar folk dance Qaytarma (also recorded by other klezmers, such as Naftule Brandwein), somewhat klezmerized into a 3/8 hora pattern instead of Tatar 9/8 or 7/8 for this dance. The title "A Turkish Wedding" is pure orientalism😅

"Beyond Joseph Moskowitz" .. I started writing this post in Brooklyn back in April, but I soon realized it would be a lot of work and would be a distraction from my archival research. But now that I've been back I've had time to finish researching it and typing it up. A look at some of the better and lesser known Jewish cimbalom players from the directories of A.F.M. local 802, 1922-50. A truly niche deep dive for my own interest!
