Este #ViernesDeEscritorio les comparto que va muy bien el proyecto de educación tecnológica en casa con mi hija. Hace unos 6 meses, nos cedieron una #iMac de 2011, atorada en #MacOS 10.13.6 (ya no se le puede instalar #Chrome, sólo admite #Firefox ESR, #LibreOffice 7.4.5 y un montón de limitantes más).

Hasta el fin de semana pasado, mi hija de 9 años, usaba esa máquina para tareas y juegos, con MacOS. Recientemente, obtuve un dock para discos duros, rescaté uno de una computadora que desechó mi papá, conecté ambas cosas a la iMac y le configuré su propio #EliveLinux en modo live usb con persistencia (única forma en que consigo preservar MacOS y usar #Linux ahí).

El domingo pasado, con una sencilla pero elocuente explicación, le di su iniciación como hacker, sensibilizando sobre la importancia de explorar la tecnología más allá de lo evidente y buscar alternativas más privadas, seguras, personalizables y sustentables:

✅ Revisó su primer correo NO-Bigtech
✅ Hizo su primera tarea en #LibreOffice (v. 25.8.5)
✅ Concluyó una serie de ejercicios de inglés en plataforma mediante Firefox (v. 147)
✅ Envió su primer documento a imprimir
✅ Eligió su primera lista musical en #Audacious

Estaba extasiada con todo lo que se podía hacer mejor en Linux en comparación con MacOS, pero no tanto como yo 🤩.

Raspberri Pi5 experience

• neofetch is still alive on the SBC Pi5 distro
• screenfetch install works
• hyfetch is not in the standard repositories
• I want hyfetch here too so I'll go to the home page

• the command add-apt-repository does not exist > I will check that out in MX Linux for the SBC Pi5

Mi #elivelinux en una USB con persistencia, funcionando en una #imac de hace década y media, con #macos anclado en Sierra por la política de obsolescencia programada de #apple. Comprobando que #gnulinux revive hardware.

Continúo, a paso lento pero constante, con mi proyecto de escritorio #steampunk. La principal novedad esta vez es una configuración de #fastfetch mejor adaptada al escenario.

Me gusta lo transgresor que es seguir dando vida a hardware entrado en años, MacOS no me permite actualizar Firefox más allá de su versión ESR, ni LibreOffice más allá de la 7.4 (ya archivada); mientras que en Elive Linux instalo y uso sin problemas las versiones recientes de dichos programas.

Que ninguna multinacional sin escrúpulos (perdón por el pleonasmo) nos diga cuándo debemos deshacernos de nuestro hardware.

Finally figured out how to make #fastfetch look good on a #light terminal:

fastfetch is aliased to `fastfetch --logo-color-1 0'

Needs more testing, but it looks good on #FreeBSD for now. ;)

Hyfetch was updated to 2.0.1. It was rewritten in rust and they added support for macchina. Also a bunch of other updates.

Since I have been playing with #GnomeOS, I went back to my main distro (#Nobara) to change things up a bit on my desktop (aka tweak the top bar and dock).

I think I am gonna stay with a light themed desktop for awhile. In addition, I am trying to see if I can comfortably get away with a minimal doc; maybe eventually move to no dock. In my head, the idea of mono tasking seems like a noble effort.

Anywho, here is a quick screen grab of my Nobara Gnome DE setup along with the cursory #fastfetch info displayed like the good ol #Neofetch layout.

Actually I love #fastfetch more than #neofetch , much faster, less dependencies. Not to say the latter is not actively maintained anymore. But I don't know it can only show what neofetch would show in the screen.

I just knew before even trying that such an option would be available lol, I know #Linux/#FOSS devs too well - to those who've been reluctant to replace #Neofetch with #Fastfetch just bcos you prefer the shorter, simpler output of Neo rather than the busy defaults of Fastfetch, you could run the following to have Fastfetch display outputs similar to what Neofetch offers OOTB:

fastfetch -c neofetch

alias neofetch='fastfetch -c neofetch'

Damn, I love GNOME's screenshot tool.

Linux App Release Roundup (Feb 2025)

February was a bumper month for Linux app updates, bringing new releases of Mozilla Firefox, LibreOffice, ONLYOFFICE and more — as well as a slew of smaller app updates that didn’t get a full-length article on this blog. Rather than skip over them entirely I thought I’d resurrect my Linux Release Roundup thread1 to provide a monthly (perhaps twice-monthly, if there’s a lot) run-through of some of them. After all, for those of us on fixed-release Linux distribution like Ubuntu may find one of these smaller updates fixes a flaw or fleshes out a feature to make it worth upgrading :sys_more_orange:

Yesterday I wrote about Neofetch which is a tool that I have used in the past on Linux systems I owned. It was an easy way to provide a good snapshot of the distribution I was running and some other pertinent information about my computing environment. One of my readers replied to let me know that the project was no longer being maintained. It was last updated in August 2020. The commenter suggested that I check out Fastfetch. I thanked the reader and followed the link he provided to the Github repository for Fastfetch.

The project maintains that it is, “An actively maintained, feature-rich and performance oriented, neofetch like system information tool.” It is easy to install and provides much of the same information that was provided by Neofetch. However, it does supply your IP address but the project maintains that presents no privacy risk. The installation for Fedora and RPM based distributions is familiar by entering the following command.

$ sudo dnf install fastfetch

If you are a Ubuntu based distribution like my Linux Mint daily driver then the installation requires the download of the appropriate .deb file. Once the package was installed on my system I decided to try it.

Fastfetch can be easily installed on a MacOS with Homebrew. I decided to try it on my MacBook.

% brew install fastfetch

Fastfetch is written in C with 132 contributors. It is open source with an MIT license. In addition to Linux and MacOS systems you can install Fastfetch on Windows with Chocolatey. The project states that Fastfetch is faster than Neofetch and it is actively maintained. Fastfetch has a greater number of features than it’s predecessor and if you want to see them all enter the following command. For more information and examples be sure to visit the project wiki
