@happyborg I’m hosting my #Mastodon and #Matrix servers on an Asus PN42 with #n100. It’s a nice passively cooled box with nothing extra. Except the WiFi+Bluetooth chip, which can be easily removed.

Alright team, I am going to give #BSD another try. What is the best version of BSD that I can install on an Alder Lake #N100 Intel CPU?
I have a mini pc that is collecting dust at the moment and I gots the BSD itch.
Edit: Thanks for all the suggestions. I am trying out #NomadBSD which is based on #FreeBSD. Supposedly it is fairly new user friendly. The documentation is easy to follow.
If this goes belly up, I will try the other big three. At this time I don’t want to go through with manually setting up a desktop environment. -

Is it expected for #tailscale to use a lot of CPU when rsync'ing between clients? This is a humble #n100 but still

SZBOX DS156 is the latest take on a 15.6 inch notebook with an integrated 7-inch tablet
SZBOX has started selling a new 15.6″ laptop on its AliExpress store. The most intriguing feature of the SZBOX DS156 is the 7-inch tablet situated to the right of its keyboard and touchpad.
This isn’t a new idea by any means. Lenovo offered a high-end 17.3″ ThinkPad with an 8-inch secondary screen back in 2022. Just last year Topton introduced a much more modest take on the concept with the […]

Looking for a dedicated GPU for #transcoding purposes turned out to be the worst rabbit hole.🙈
So, I'm using a AMD Ryzen 4600G in my homelab featuring #ProxmoxVE. The hardware transcoding capabilities of AMD hardware is very much behind Nvidia and #Intel, even though it isn't half as bad as expected. Anyway, the best transcoding hardware (best quality at same size/profile) are Intel devices featuring #QuickSync. Setting up another dedicated transcoding device (featuing a low power Intel APU such as the #N100) device doesn't seem to make much sense for me. There are several Intel Arc GPUs on the market and they all have pretty much the same transcoding capabilities, so I'd like to get the Intel GPU featuring the lowest power draw, especially when idling. (1/?)

Next I run #syncthing on my laptop, and on my #homelab #intelN100 #n100 mini pc / server that runs in the cupboard and is very #lowpower I run #proxmox and this also has a #samba share which allows any other network devices to see the media.
With syncthing running, I always have two copies of the media, but for backup I was using #rclone to send an encrypted copy to #googledrive - which I am in the process of switching over to #nextcloud running on #hetzner

:blobthinking:

After bringing the new server (#CowServer) online, joined it to the existing to make a #Proxmox cluster, then remembered something...
Couldn't really turn it off, the cluster would lose quorum. Well, can set a machine to two votes, 'two_node' to on, it does work that way.
But not well, been down this road before ;P
Added a cheap little #N100 box from Beelink as a third node - good for that critical third vote, and unlike a qdevice, can also run some little things (pihole's).

Curious if others are experiencing #instability with #AMD processors or #GPU on #Linux or if this is #AlpineLinux specific. Opened an additional ticket that is focused on the AMD specific issue, since the last one appears it may have been generalized to the linux kernel overall. I do not see the same behavior on an #Intel #N100. https://gitlab.alpinelinux.org/alpine/aports/-/issues/16920 #bsod

Also, diesmal echt jetzt, gell?
(wieso ist die Grafik meines Alder-Lake-Intel-CPU-Grafik-Laptops so unbeschleunigt?)

OK I've got #Fedora 41 running on the cheap-o #N100 mini PC. It's been quite a long time since I last ran #Linux as a desktop OS. So far, so good. Fedora has come a long way.
This is my first time using #flatpak and it's pretty cool!
I'm going to have to more methodically figure out what I need a #Mac for and see how to translate it to Linux.
This effort sponsored by #TimCook's million dollar donation to #Trump's inauguration & related fascist boot licking.

I have an Intel #N100 board from Chinese "brand" KingnovyPC. It used to work well, but now, when power is unplugged, it forgets date/time and also #EFI variables. So on power-up, it boots into the BIOS setup, and I have to boot from a rescue Linux USB stick to re-write the EFI vars to boot from NVMe again... until the next power down.
The CMOS battery is dead, which explains the date/time problem, but did they REALLY also store EFI vars in CMOS-RAM, or is my hypothesis wrong?

Moved my #Jellyfin install to a fresh install on my #N100 machine.Works perfectly and #transcoding works well enough for 3 concurrent streams/transcodes.
I have now offloaded all VMs and Containers from my older #Proxmox server.
2025 will be my #YearOfMiniPCs I'm guessing! -
All VMs started up and worked 100%.. except for my #Jellyfin VM.
In the older server I have a #Nvidia card to assist with transcoding since the #Xeon #CPU didn't do a good job of it.
Testing things out now to see if I can run it without said graphics card or if I need to use my other #MiniPC that has the #N100 CPU instead. -
So, the other day I noticed a strap on my Honeywell RU6500 #FullFaceElastomeric had broken… this is one I was keeping around for parts, so not a big issue… but the thought of the same fate meeting my current one worried me a bit.
Looked around, found a new Sundström SR200 going for a bargain price (AU$250… normally they are >$550)… beauty. It's on its way south from Mt. Isa.
Today I ordered some filters (from a local supplier here in Brisbane), mainly some #P3 filters (my main concern is #bushfire smoke and #COVID19)… I happened to notice this little chart for the SR-510 particular filters.
https://www.allensindustrial.com.au/documents/Sundstrom%20SR510%20Brochure.pdf
Classes:
- P1: 80% | up to 20% leakage | Protect against Dry and Wet particles _except_ aerosols, carcinogens, radioactive particles, bacteria, *viruses*, spores or biochemicals such as enzymes or hormones
- P2: 94% | up to 6% leakage | Protect against Dry and Wet particles _except_ *viruses*, spores or biochemicals such as enzymes or hormones
- P3: 99.95% | <0.05% leakage | Protect against Dry and wet particles (all types)It was the exceptions for "viruses" in the #P2 and #P1 filters that surprised me. I thought #P2 was more or less equivalent to #N95 and #KF94. (P3 being equivalent to #N100) I hear people singing the praises of N95s with regards to COVID-19, and definitely it beats many common alternatives, but this has me scratching my head.
The SR-510 is a P3 filter, so no biggie… but I thought P2s were up to the task.

@reinhilde @jon_giraffe I think anything that is reusable will have cleaning requirements.
That said… I went the #Elastomeric route because the idea of generating a mountain of plastic waste from single-use masks did not sit well with me.
As an asthmatic, I also found unvented masks really gave me breathing difficulties. A vented mask worked better, and while there are single-use #N95 masks with vents, typically the vent is unfiltered and can't be easily retrofitted with a filter.
I went a Honeywell/North RU6500M (#FullFaceElastomeric) at first because I saw one going cheap … and it's been good, but it is a bulky option, so managed to find a Honeywell 7700 (#HalfFaceElastomeric) which uses the same filters (I have both #N95 / #P2 and #N100 / #P3 filters) but is less vulnerable to scratches.
Both I was able to reversibly modify to add an exhaust filter: typically I use disinfectant wipes to wipe down the mask inside and out… and if I fold one of those wipes three times over and cut it to size… it makes a passable exhaust filter.
At the moment I'm mostly masking during the winter months when cases are at their worst and the inconvenience is at its lowest. (Yes, I know COVID-19 is not seasonal, however behaviour and the immune system load from seasonal infection in winter months, raises the risks at that time.)

Here is the list of OSs that I have attempted to install (with a DE) on my Intel #N100 #MiniPC and have failed thus far (not in an particular order):
1) #ClearLinux (will try again)
2) #GhostBSD
3) #NomadBSD
4) #FreeBSD
5) #MidnightBSD
6) #HelloSystem
7) #ReactOS
8) #OpenIndianaHiptster*edit* I did successfully install #Haiku but I did not find it to be fun to play with.

I bought a laptop recently to use as a (nearly) disposable laptop for when I’m going somewhere it would be hard to keep an eye on it (like the ballgame). It’s got an #Intel #N100 chip in it, and I gotta say, I’m super impressed at how much better the extreme low end CPUs have gotten in the last ~8 years. The #Atom chips were basically unusable, but this thing is actually pretty nice. Obviously it’s nowhere near an #M1 or an #i7, but it’s definitely usable.
