Improvised attacks are when a character attacks with a weapon in a way it was not made for. For example, swatting a monster with a bow, or throwing a club.

Improvised attack rolls do not gain proficiency bonus and always do 1d4 + the attack type's modifier in damage.

Sometimes dice rolls have advantage ⬆️ or disadvantage ⬇️. Advantage causes you to perform the roll twice, taking the higher value. Disadvantage causes you to perform the roll twice, taking the lower value.

Example of disadvantage: attack roll when attacking a flying monster with a melee weapon.
Example of advantage: attack roll when attacking a monster vulnerable to the damage type.

Some situations may call for you to make a decision whether to attack first or wait to investigate. If you attack first against an enemy, they will be surprised and skip their first combat turn. If you misplace your trust, you risk losing your first combat turn instead.

Mistakenly attacking a non-enemy will often lead to less than desirable outcomes as well.

The character may dual-wield two weapons at once, but they both MUST be Light weapons (denoted by the L in the shop).

During combat, the character utilizes both weapons to make attacks. However, only the weapon that is not disadvantaged gains the ability modifier bonus to damage.

(Note: "Crossbow, light" is not a capital-L Light weapon, but a "Crossbow, hand" is.)

Note that some classes can only wear certain types of armor; most spell casters cannot wear armor.

When you level up, your maximum hitpoints and maximum hit dice always increase.

Depending on level, you may also learn new spells, increase an ability score, or increase your proficiency bonus.
