  1. Endlich wieder zurück auf Fedora! 🎩

  2. Has anyone made the switch from #KDE Plasma to #COSMIC?

I'm tempted to rebase my #Fedora #Kinoite to #COSMIC Atomic now that COSMIC Files has scripting support: github.com/pop-os/cosmic-files

Things I discovered in a VM that I would be missing out on:
    - inhibiting screen blanking
    - wallpaper of the day

    Things I'd gain:
    - automatic tiling
    - a simpler, less cluttered desktop

    Things I'm concerned about:
    - stylus support

Has anyone made the switch and is (un)satisfied with it?

  3. Immutable linux is my second favorite operating system after FreeBSD. My secondary laptop is installed with Fedora Kinoite because I use this laptop only for lecturing. FreeBSD in my first laptop is the only one that handle hardcore and radical programming. #freebsd #immutable #linux #fedora #kinoite

  4. Alongside the Fedora 44 release, I’m happy to announce that we have sealed bootable container images ready for testing for the Fedora Atomic Desktops!

Sealed bootable container images include all the components needed to create a fully verified boot chain, from the firmware to the operating system composefs image. This relies on Secure Boot on UEFI systems.

More details at fedoramagazine.org/sealed-atom and github.com/travier/fedora-atom

  5. Any #fedora geniuses know (not speculation, I have lots of that already) why on #kinoite the battery charge limits get reset every few updates?

  6. Another release of #Fedora is coming up, and once again I see almost nothing for #Silverblue or #Kinoite in the changelog. TBH, Fedora Atomic has kind of a ghost ship vibe fedoraproject.org/wiki/Release

  7. I have been thinking about leaving the image-based (atomic/immutable) world and going with Ubuntu or Mint to easily get a signed kernel with the proprietary Nvidia driver.

But since #Bluefin and Bluefin LTS for AMD/Intel run so well, presumably b/c this 9-year-old laptop has a good-enough Intel GPU, I might be able to stick with the kinds of systems I've been running for the past few years, which include #Aeon Desktop and #Fedora #Silverblue and #Kinoite.

  8. Does anyone have an idea how I can install the printer drivers for a Brother DCP-115C on #Fedora 43 #Kinoite?

When I try to install the four RPMs from Brother with "rpm-ostree install bprint.rpm ..." I receive the following error message: "opendir(local): No such file or directory"

    #fedoraatomic

  9. Dear KDE Plasma Linux users,

say I have a laptop with a LUKS-encrypted file system.
Say this is a single user system.

The user unlocks the device (before or after the bootloader, should not matter in this discussion) with a safe password.

The user is logged in automatically in KDE Plasma.

KWallet is set to have an empty password, to not ask the user for a password just to enable WiFi or similar (which is the only thing KWallet is being used for).

The user still needs to enter the password after locking the screen, suspending the machine or similar.

Passwords are still in a locked password safe (think KeePassXC or similar), so this requires unlocking with a safe password.

Does anyone see major security flaws in this setup?

Due to #EndOf10 I have converted some users to Linux, and having to enter your password multiple times is the only thing they find annoying...

  10. I have been running a Fedora Atomic system for more than 2 years. It's been mostly Silverblue with a short detour into and out of Kinoite. I like the flexibility of being able to rebase.

I enjoyed Kinoite, but there were a few papercut-level things that sent me back to Silverblue.

While Silverblue hasn't always been as trouble-free as I'd like, I'm hopeful for calmer times ahead.

  11. and here it is, after asking on the matrix channel dev Tim Ravier pointed me here pagure.io/releng/failed-compos

    and logs kojipkgs.fedoraproject.org/com

Useful to see what is appearing in testing composes and when and why your testing branch box hasn't received anything in weeks 😆

  12. @abbra Sorry for the late reply, missed your toot.

Is there really no way to create a directory at runtime anymore? Creating and maintaining a container image where the only difference is a symlink seems a little tedious.

I already tried tmpfiles.d, but either I did it wrong or it runs too late in the boot process and the root filesystem is already read-only...

  13. I've completely reworked how I build the sysexts for Fedora Atomic Desktops, Fedora CoreOS and other image based Fedora systems.

We now have a pretty website listing them: extensions.fcos.fr

This is still an unofficial/experimental project but it has been working well for me for a while now.

Next step: writing a manager for all those sysexts to make installing/removing and updating them easier.

  14. Upgraded my #Fedora #Kinoite to 42

When the upgrade begins, I was quite delightful that no #rpmfusion packages were broken.

But my joy didn't last long. I now find #Nix doesn't work well on Fedora 42. Hope this issue can be fixed soon

  15. The Fedora 42 Atomic Desktops are out! You can find all the details in the Fedora magazine article: fedoramagazine.org/whats-new-f

We also have experimental bootable container images for Fedora Asahi Remix.

  16. Since I'm all in on KDE Plasma in Fedora Kinoite, I'm dropping Tuba and picking up Tokodon as my desktop Fediverse client

  17. I recently did a "soft" distro switch from #fedora workstation to #kinoite, with a specific variant called #bazzite.

    bazzite.gg/

I already use containers all the time in my day job, so the Atomic desktop approach makes a ton of sense to me. I also recently switched from a Macbook Pro over to an #asus #zephyrus G16, so Bazzite is an especially good fit for that.

It's taken me a few days to get my head around the general approach for installing things, as it doesn't use dnf directly. But I think this morning, I finally "got it", and I am now fully on the atomic train:

For daily driving tasks, you can do everything you need to do with a combo of flatpak, brew, and Distrobox. (And automate my whole set of preferences with #ansible of course)
...which is actually pretty damn awesome.

For hardware related tasks, Bazzite ships with an extremely useful `ujust` CLI that handles a very sensible set of the essentials.

There's a few very minor tradeoffs. Example: #1password browser extension doesn't directly interface with the desktop app anymore due to the sandboxing. (Hopefully there's a fix for that as this approach to #linux matures)

All in all though, I think the Kinoite branch of Fedora might be my new distro home base.

  18. So…at first there was a little bit of friction, but now that I’ve been reading up on #fedora #Kinoite Im getting the hang of the differences between it and workstation. I installed #bazzite on my #asus #Zephyrus and I think I might actually end up preferring this. I’m gonna give it more time before I give a full recommendation…but so far, very cool.

  19. When finishing the install and booting for the first time I get
    ```error: ../../grub-core/kern/mm. c:552:out of memory
    Press any key to continue...
    ```
    Pressing a key does nothing.
Rebooting leads to the same thing. Interestingly each time I reboot, a new fedora entry is added to the boot menu.

Kind of lost with this, any ideas what the issue might be?
    Thank you 🙏

I've installed fedora kinoite on an older lenovo ideapad with 16gb RAM and 500gb disk. It has nvidia mx150.

I came from Windows, turned off secure boot and switched to AHCI instead of RAID. I've reclaimed all the space and used automatic partitioning.
I've also used fedora media writer, and passed the media test.

  24. As an update for anyone who's interested: I since rebased to #Fedora #Kinoite after some amazing people from the #Bazzite Discord found out that there something seems to different on #Bazzite / #Ublue compared to Fedora #atomic when it comes to #Huion #tablet drivers (1).

On Kinoite it works out of the box on #KDE #Wayland in system settings! 😘 ✨

  25. Manual action needed to resolve boot failure for Fedora Atomic Desktops and Fedora IoT.

Since the 39.20240617.0 and 40.20240617.0 updates for Atomic Desktops and the 40.20240617.0 update for IoT, systems with Secure Boot enabled may fail to boot if they have been installed before Fedora Linux 40.

  27. Besides introducing a new brand, Fedora Atomic Desktops had some specific updates to it in the Fedora 40 release.

As a refresher, we're talking about Silverblue, Kinoite, Sway Atomic (was Sericea), and Budgie Atomic (was Onyx) - all under one umbrella!

  28. If Fedora 40 had a headlining change, it might be @kde Plasma 6. The KDE SIG have brought over all the hard work from that community to give you a solid desktop experience from day 1.

We're also pushing technology forward by making this release Wayland-only, though X11 apps will still work!

Plasma 6 is also available for our Kinoite users. :kinoite:
