@thepwnicorn following a bit too many feeds, and using it also to lower the amount of #rssfeeds I follow, #newsboat

I set a macro (Newsboat function, not from an external macro tool) to open 10 posts of a same feed in a row. Helps getting stuff quickly, getting reminded of the general style of posts of a given source in case it's something I don't want to follow anymore, generally avoiding timeouts if used within reason, and posts opened in a row being from a same context, I don't need to make micropauses to process the change in topic after each tab.

Catching up!

And this after a few feed reloads pulling a few (dozens of) hundresds of posts from #RSS, and from trimming stuff from my urls file on #Newsboat!

Even if the total posts yet unread is close to the last one of note, I am ever more sure I am on the right path. =)

Using RSS to debloat my digital life, I'm finally seeing progress!

Peak of total feeds I think that was around 4.4k about a month ago, when I brought a lot of #RSS feeds into #Newsboat's urls file, and converting a bunch of Twitter and Youtube links to RSS added a lot of unread ones, thus the hanging < 2202 unread feeds.

Also keeping track of how much gets pulled, I noticed usually around Tuesday to Friday are the peak daily posts, my reader receiving around 2k~2.5k posts per daily reload.

And tested today, and smart reading, I think that's the term, does seem to help at quickly tackling new posts. Not as many micropauses to process the change in topic if opening e.g. 10 posts of a same feed instead of 10 random ones.

Another thing I noticed, since there are a lot of legacy feeds I don't care for anymore, the more feeds I remove, the easier it gets to evaluate which I'd rather keep and which not. =D

@vintagerancher I use #Newsboat on Termux on #Android with root. Not the most practical, but it lets me copy the needed files back and forth between PC and Android, so no need to keep two separated #RSS reated instances.

Since stable #ytdlp is sometimes broken while nightly already has the fix, like right now, I've updated my #newsboat (rss) - yt-dlp - mpv - python spaghetti to quickly be able to grab the nightly build and for it to check whether the system binary or downloaded nightly binary is fresher (parsing the --version output) and use it automatically.

Regarding #Newsboat, first reason, the original one, is for debloating my online life, as I can open the feeds en masse with in-built macros from the tool, so I can go through the posts more quickly, or evaluate if I want to continue following a given person or place (though I do try to avoid opening too much at once, ~10 posts at once being generally enough). So I just need to get the links of everyone and every place I follow that could have some form of #RSS feed, direct or indirectly, and slap in a new line of the urls file.

The second reason is that, as things start debloating, and thankfully they have even if it took me some two years for that, I can get back to the habit of reading, as posts are pulled without images, and feeds like Nitter's pull the whole text body.

Third, it works on phone through Termux with a small amount of work (and root helps btw), so I can carry the Newsboat's instance's files with me even as I'm not on PC.

@PsySal for Linux, I use #Newsboat. It's purely terminal-based, but adding a feed is pretty simple. You just need to paste the link in the urls file, the default path being $HOME/.newsboat/urls

Then, on Newsboat itself, you press lower-case r on a feed or while selecting it to load/reload it, or upper-case R to reload all feeds.

Alternatively, if you have Android, you can share your feed link to #Feeder (F-Droid link) and it will open the form for adding the feed.

i really like #rss and #newsboat for reading/exploring articles. been using it for years but never took time to theme it out for myself. was able to #hack together a nice theme that's easy on my eyes. theme works well on #freebsd and #linux with various terminals (ie #kitty #alacritty )

this is really nice and easy to read (at least for myself).

Tips for avoiding time-outs with Newsboat

First, apparently Newsboat always checks lines as they are placed in the file, so shuffling them helps not pinging feeds from a same domain all at once. Some programs have shuffle features built in, like Sublime Text with Edit > Permute lines > Shuffle, so no need to do it manually.

Second, if using auto-reload, remember to set reload-time too, else Newsboat will keep cycling updating the feeds without breaks.

Third, if using a repeating next-unread ; open-in-browser macro, try not making it too long. Macros don't have a throttle feature (actually Newsboat generally doesn't), so commands in the macro will run as soon as they can. And by consequence, the more a macro repeats, the more likely anti-bot features are to trigger.

Fourth, leveraging feeds slower to respond with one of the few throttling functions from Newsboat, download-timeout, can help lowering the aggressiveness of the reader too. When reloading the feeds, download-timeout 90 for example should make Newsboat wait 90 seconds for a response of a given feed before giving up and going to the next, giving some space for anti-bot features to cool down.

Fifth, keep an eye for redundant feeds that aren't needed. The less you ping a domain without need, the better.

#Miniflux server that a friend hosts, combined with #Newsboat on the terminal and #CapyReader on Android.

Oh, and the web interface itself is great. Very basic/brutalistic and fast.

I also used #newsboat a decade ago, and it's quite nice. These days I just read #RSS feeds from the Epicyon newswire column, but if I wasn't doing that I would probably still be running newsboat. I am tending to prefer TUI based things, because they're a much simpler interface with no distractions.

Konfigurationsdateien lassen sich mit #Git einfach zwischen #macOS und Kubuntu #Linux synchronisieren.

Das ist ganz nützlich für den RSS-Readers #Newsboat, wenn man die gleichen Nachrichten auf unterschiedlichen Clients lesen möchte. Nutzt man macOS- und Linux-Gerätelassen sich einzelne Shortcuts zum Starten von Apps nicht mehr verwenden.

Der Grund: Die Startbefehle für Apps unterscheiden sich bei den beiden Betriebssystemen. Aber es gibt eine einfache Lösung. 😀

@primeapple Every Youtube Channel/Playlist automatically has an RSS feed. I just add them to my RSS reader #newsboat. This way I get a notification and a link to the video.
