  2. @rysiek

For awhile now i've been wanting to switch my phone OS to Linux, like Sailfish, but i wouldn't even know how to do so

    my goals are #Resist #BreakTheOligarchy & become 💯 #magafree to create #MyBlueWorld , so i'm working my way thru as i learn

    i'd love to see more migration from #Windows & #Apple to #Linux

no one should be using #MSOffice anymore w/ #LibreOffice

hopefully we move from #youtube to #peertube soon

i really hope to see more activity on #Mastodon & the #Fediverse

  3. @tinker

    Yes! 💙

I used to put Made w/ #LibreOffice on the bottom of all my #memes the free alt to #MSOffice that doesn't steal your data (like #Google docs does)

We need more usage, promotion & funding to open source software

Still waiting for libreoffice to release a version for tablets or 2in1s so i can use my pen. i do a lot of sketches & on the fly notes in powerpoint & notes

i need libre to make this 💙

  4. Cuffed at my first crack at adding colour to my MetOffice Site-Specific Hourly Spot Forecast. #trmnl is really making this easy, coupled with the Pico-W’s RTC that sleeps the device for the update frequency so running it off battery power won’t kill it.

Plotting what to do with my eventual purchase of the 13.3” colour ePaper display. Likely will need to spin up my own server to manage all the displays.

  5. The promised plots.
I'll show data since 2003 only because only then did real measurements really kick off. Before that, measurements were so spotty with 1 in January in one year, then 3 years nothing, then 5 measurements in for example August and so on.
Data source for measurements is #NOAA ncei.noaa.gov/access/world-oce

The other plot is from a #ReAnalysis called EN4.2 metoffice.gov.uk/hadobs/en4/do
It is based on the same NOAA data, and goes back to 1900. EN4.2 has better quality assurance than my download. And EN4.2 is able to calculate the likely values in adjacent coordinates and adjacent months.

Among other Reanalyses, EN4.2 has also been used in the newest preprint by the Dutch team around #vanWesten. It sees AMOC tip in 2065 in RCP8.5 and in 2085 in RCP4.5. But it is based on biased Reanalyses and known-to-be too stable #CMIP6: arxiv.org/pdf/2407.19909

Whereas the first new preprint by van Westen's team, which tips AMOC 2037-2064, uses only real measurements of the 3 dedicated monitoring arrays in the North, tropical and South #Atlantic. arxiv.org/pdf/2406.11738
Here, the caveat is: very short data series.

With measurements being so spotty, I only show monthly salinity 2003ff in down to 10m depth. And only from the area in the South Atlantic. Averaged on a 2 by 2 degree grid from Argentina's coast to longitude -48, and latitudes 40-48 South.

Sorry, not sorry: neither dataset shows a smoking gun. 😁

A new #MachineLearning model for weather prediction – FastNet - developed by the partnership – is showing comparable results to @metoffice Global #NWP system.

This represents the next step in weather prediction.

  7. I see that the Met Office web site had fallen prey to make-it-good-on-a-phone syndrome and produced a public beta site that on a PC looks crude, cheap, unprofessional, Teletubbyesque fork-the-user lazy code.

  9. The rate at which atmospheric CO2 is increasing is now outpacing the pathways set out by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that limit global warming to 1.5C.

The third working group report of the #IPCC’s sixth assessment report (#AR6), published in 2022, presented a set of seven “illustrative pathways” that highlight how different mitigation choices across major economic sectors translate into future #GreenhouseGas #emissions and global temperatures.

In the three most-ambitious pathways, #GlobalWarming has a 50% chance of either staying below 1.5C, or overshooting it by only 0.1C (for up to several decades) before then returning to below 1.5C.

Yet, not only are atmospheric #CO2 concentrations still rising, the rate of rise is #accelerating.
The build-up of CO2 in the #atmosphere has been monitored at the #MaunaLoa observatory in #Hawaii since 1958.
As illustrated by the iconic #KeelingCurve below, the increase has been accelerating over the decades (blue line) due to ongoing emissions of CO2 from burning #FossilFuels and changing land use.
So while the curve needs to rapidly bend in the other direction to hold warming to 1.5C (light red line), the rate of rising CO2 marches onwards and upwards.

  10. This was a great exercise for me. I've never done VBA in Word before. I'm probably going to automate a bunch more of the laborous actions I need to do in Word frequently.
