Every year around March 1st for most of our lifetimes, we enter world record CO₂ season, from now until mid-May. Mid may is typically the record high for each year, as well as the all time world record Carbon Dioxide reading. May of last year, we hit 430 ppm. We hit that again just a couple days ago. Get ready for this years slew of all time highs, with 433 ppm within reach by mid May.

The curve produced by #MaunaLoa measurements is one of the most iconic charts in modern science, known as the #KeelingCurve, after Charles David Keeling, who was the researcher who painstakingly collected the data. His son, Ralph Keeling, a professor at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, now oversees collecting and updating data.

The rate at which atmospheric CO2 is increasing is now outpacing the pathways set out by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that limit global warming to 1.5C.
The third working group report of the #IPCC’s sixth assessment report (#AR6), published in 2022, presented a set of seven “illustrative pathways” that highlight how different mitigation choices across major economic sectors translate into future #GreenhouseGas #emissions and global temperatures.
In the three most-ambitious pathways, #GlobalWarming has a 50% chance of either staying below 1.5C, or overshooting it by only 0.1C (for up to several decades) before then returning to below 1.5C.
Yet, not only are atmospheric #CO2 concentrations still rising, the rate of rise is #accelerating.
The build-up of CO2 in the #atmosphere has been monitored at the #MaunaLoa observatory in #Hawaii since 1958.
As illustrated by the iconic #KeelingCurve below, the increase has been accelerating over the decades (blue line) due to ongoing emissions of CO2 from burning #FossilFuels and changing land use.

Mauna Loa volcano has cut power to the #KeelingCurve observatory from Nov28. This site contains one of the longest baseline measurements of #CO2 and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
Australia's #CapeGrim Baseline Air Pollution Station has been operating continuously since April 1976. No public daily stats but monthly average data points displayed - 15 October is most recent data point.

Because of the #MaunaLoa eruption and lava flows, the #CO2 measurement equipment that maintains the famous #Keeling Curve lost power on Nov. 28 and is not currently recording data.
Citing their post: "The Keeling Curve is considered the icon of scientific evidence that human activities are altering the planet’s #climate. It has provided incontrovertible evidence that the amount of [atmospheric] gas carbon dioxide has risen far above any levels experienced on Earth for at least three million years […] Researchers at #Scripps Institution of Oceanography, which established the Keeling Curve record at the site in 1958, are exploring options regarding the relocation of measurement equipment."
