I read on TechPowerUp an item talking about a change in one of Microsoft's Patch Tuesday updates:

I have to confess. After decades, I just installed #MSWindows. Into #VM off-course. I need to use some specific software that doesn't work in #Wine. My experience? It's terrible! I might be spoiled by #Linux, but the installation took forever. I had to skip several wizards trying to convince me to share my personal information. Then I met a dialog about creating a MS account. To skip that, I had to google and the answer was opening up a terminal and typing in some magic words. After finishing and skipping a few more adverts, I'm in. It is using 40G of disk space without having anything installed and whenever I open a start menu and search for some software that I have installed it displays search results and tries to sell me adds. So this is the #UX people are paying for? So they could avoid a nightmare of having a fully functional system with an office suite and compiler in 20G without any ads and that can be installed without using a terminal (like most of Linux distros out there)? I knew that the UX will be unintuitive to me, but honestly, this is objectively bad, it isn't just me being picky and having some strange preferences.

Imagine this in a computer that is running microscopy equipment that runs 24/7. Why scientific equipment vendors continue to use Microsoft when Linux and other operating systems are an option is beyond me. Inertia? Stupidity? And their closed-source device drivers force us to keep their provided computers.

My (Win10) computer just waited for me to take my coffee break to do a forced restart. No asking, no warning, didn't care that I had unsaved documents opened and Matlab running.
I am sick and tired of this. I have already tried all the tricks to pause updates that cause restarts (can't pause forever) and reduce the "active hours" (can't reduce them down to 0).I want a program that completely stops forced restarts - does that exist? 🙏

My last try to acclimate with a #MSWindows OS was years ago after I left IBM when I bought a #SurfaceGo tablet. It didn’t work. Even though I liked the hardware, I didn’t use it.
Now I’ve given it a second life. I set it up with #Ubuntu #Linux using the #SurfaceLinux project.Everything works fine but the pen. But Ian not sure if the pen still works at all.

Org set up and pushed out keyboarded layouts in several languages. #ESOL classes, so many people with many languages, so great! Students can easily switch to French, Arabic, Chinese, etc. input. Wonderful.
But, it took 20 minutes to find out how to add my dvorak back to the list - in "Advanced Keyboard Settings".
Next day, #dvorak is gone from the list. But, still applied in advanced settings.
BUT, suddenly the lock screen IS dvorak!
#WTF Microsoft??

2) switch to dvorak layout
3) lock screen
4) when unlocking, keyboard is switched back to qwerty
5) after unlocking, desktop keyboard is qwertyWhy can't it just stay dvorak? If someone clicks "other user", is it that hard to switch to qwerty then?

@Pikapods You make a drama of a typical #Microsoft bug. They even broke the start menu button recently. You know the one thing that should always work.
#MSWindows is getting worse and worse. Nadella said that 30% of the code is #AI generated, so you know that there are no professionals who contribute to quality anymore.

@vowe Was man alles bei #Microsoft so tut, um das Endgerät grundsätzlich benutzbar zu machen, ist schon erstaunlich.
Viele Leute behaupten, dass #MSWindows installieren sehr einfach ist. Ich denke, dass wir deswegen viele unsichere Installationen im Umlauf haben.

In the last week or so, #Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella announced that they were going to pull back from doing new feature work for #Windows for a bit, and focus on bug fixes and other quality-of-life improvements for users and administrators. Windows' already shaky reputation has taken a beating over the last year as it seems that every monthly rollup #patch, and many out-of-band #patches, introduce new problems at the same rate as they fix previous ones.
Is this giving you deja vu? It should. Remember a couple or three years ago, when the same guy announced that Microsoft was going to focus on security? They were in the middle of a long spell of brutal security holes found in all their products. Remember how they told their #engineers "If you have to choose between doing a feature and doing security, choose security"?
Remember how you never heard about that initiative again?
It's the same thing here. #PR garbage in service of a narrative that no, Windows' horrible security, usability, and #stability aren't actually that bad, so that MS can focus on their core competencies of buzzword promotion, stock market analyst manipulation, and monopoly abuse.
Perhaps someone in Microsoft management actually believes these refocusing efforts are genuine - but if you don't change the incentives, they won't actually take hold.

Just for fun: my friends and I used to get together for StarCraft LAN parties. I was on #Linux (probably Mandrake?), most of my friends were on #MSWindows (probably 98), maybe one or two were on Macs. Guess who had the fewest network / LAN issues? Yup: me and maybe the Mac guys. Pretty much without fail, we would waste an hour while the MSWin guys tried to figure out why they couldn't see anyone or join a game.
That said, I miss the LAN parties. In person is much more fun.

A few things about the new #Windows11 #Notepad --
First off... WHY IS THERE A PROFILE ICON IN THE TOP RIGHT, WHAT ARE YOU LOGGING INTO IN NOTEPAD*
Second... Notepad getting #Markdown support is a pretty rad evolution.
Of course, Microsoft had to botch the implementation (lack of support for fairly common features, for example `preformatted text`); that's to be expected, but it is still frustrating. #Microsoft just can't get anything right! 😠 -

Introduced me to so many new and interesting things for me! 🥰I guess I would have not discovered #VivaldiBrowser without it, and I would have probably been an #avid #gamer or a guy who thought he knew much, when he actually doesn't.
Now, I at least know how much I don't, and I'm interested in more advanced things I would have not known about in #MSWindows! -

Really? I heard #Microsoft does this to be able to run its #AI on people's #computers. The idea is, make sure people have the necessary resources to be #tracked.
There was a great #interview/#discussion about privacy, including this #topic. It was between a #woman and a #man, done #remotely. The man was the one who taught the woman about the importance of #privacy, and in that interview they were discussing various topics in general. IIRC, the man's name was #Megan or so. 🤔 If anyone knows the #video and has the #link, please #share it, I need it. :tony_smiling:
