Since March the K-Cor coronagraph is finally back in action on #MaunaLoa - and at the #coronagraphs symposium in Boulder the value of a ground-based instrument was highlighted by Tom Berger: it catches a beginning #CoronalMassEjection almost an hour earlier than all existing coronagraphs in space which have to cover more of the surroundings of the Sun.

#Carbondioxide levels in the atmosphere just hit a ‘depressing’ new record
#Greenhousegases, such as carbon dioxide, are measured as a proportion of the total atmosphere. The numbers are presented as the number of molecules of a particular gas out of a million total molecules, or ppm.
These data come from the #NOAA’s #MaunaLoa Observatory, which may soon be shut down because of proposed government budget cuts.

The rate at which atmospheric CO2 is increasing is now outpacing the pathways set out by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that limit global warming to 1.5C.

The third working group report of the #IPCC’s sixth assessment report (#AR6), published in 2022, presented a set of seven “illustrative pathways” that highlight how different mitigation choices across major economic sectors translate into future #GreenhouseGas #emissions and global temperatures.

In the three most-ambitious pathways, #GlobalWarming has a 50% chance of either staying below 1.5C, or overshooting it by only 0.1C (for up to several decades) before then returning to below 1.5C.

Yet, not only are atmospheric #CO2 concentrations still rising, the rate of rise is #accelerating.
The build-up of CO2 in the #atmosphere has been monitored at the #MaunaLoa observatory in #Hawaii since 1958.
As illustrated by the iconic #KeelingCurve below, the increase has been accelerating over the decades (blue line) due to ongoing emissions of CO2 from burning #FossilFuels and changing land use.
So while the curve needs to rapidly bend in the other direction to hold warming to 1.5C (light red line), the rate of rising CO2 marches onwards and upwards.

Atmospheric CO2 monitoring continues despite Mauna Loa volcanic disruption

The ongoing #volcanic eruption at #MaunaLoa in #Hawaii has caused the Mauna Loa Observatory (#MLO) data series to be temporarily interrupted since November 29. But this does not mean that atmospheric #CO2 monitoring has not been interrupted.

"Humans have rarely had much success stopping lava and, despite the world’s technological advances, doing so is still difficult and dependent on the force of the flow and the terrain. But many in Hawaii also question the wisdom of interfering with nature and Pele, the Hawaiian deity of volcanoes and fire.

"[In 1881], "Princess Ruth Ke’elikōlani approached the flow, offered brandy and red scarves and chanted, asking Pele to stop the flow and go home. The flow stopped before the barriers were built.

"More than 50 years later, Thomas A. Jaggar, the founder of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, asked U.S. Army Air Services to send planes to bomb a Mauna Loa vent to disrupt lava channels."

"'Thinking you should physically divert lava is a Western idea rooted in the notion that humans have to control everything,' said Kealoha Pisciotta, a #NativeHawaiian cultural practitioner. She said people need to adjust to the lava, not the other way around."

“'We are not separate from nature,' she said. 'We are a part of nature.'"

#CopernicusAtmosphere forecasts also seeing increased sulphate aerosol optical depth in the #MaunaLoa 🌋 plume from the chemical conversion of SO2. This isn't ash and is only possible in the model due to the assimilation of 🛰️ SO2 obs - will be checking Aeronet sites for observed increases in AOD over the next couple of days.

In the linked video, #Scripps scientist Ralph Keeling, the son of Charles David Keeling who started to develop the CO2 measurement at Mauna Loa observatory, explains how the measurement is done. The keeling curve is named from C.D. Keeling.

Because of the #MaunaLoa eruption and lava flows, the #CO2 measurement equipment that maintains the famous #Keeling Curve lost power on Nov. 28 and is not currently recording data.

@srmullens yes, it's steeper closer to the #MaunaLoa caldera, but the lava flows should slow down as they approach the flats near Saddle Road.

Also I discovered last night that there is a lava flow diversion structure between #MLO and the caldera.

For those wondering today why locating a #CO2 observational #station on a flank of an active #MaunaLoa volcano:
1. It is remote from major pollution sources and located at a hight of 3.4 km above sea level - a perfect spot for sampling background air in the well mixed free #troposphere.
2. It is easily accessible and has a good local infrastructure.
3. It is also the longest #record of #volcanic CO2 observations.
A win-win situation for #science 😀
