#Carbondioxide levels in the atmosphere just hit a ‘depressing’ new record, in April. #CO2 levels averaged about 431 parts per million (ppm) over that month.
These data come from the #NOAA’s #MaunaLoa Observatory, which may soon be shut down because of proposed government budget cuts.
Even during interglacial periods, when #Earth trended toward warmer temperatures and higher CO2, amount of CO2 in atmosphere seemed to have topped out at 300ppm.

So, I have a CO2 sensor that usually runs for hours or days. I think this sensor was developed for indoor climate measurements in production or office environments.
It has a built-in calibration mechanism where I need to provide current CO2 concentration in fresh air. Factory value was 400 ppm. I do this once a year.
How do other, more precise/scientific CO2 sensors handle this problem? Run a script that gets the latest value from Mauna Loa Observatory, and use that to calibrate the sensor?

Since March the K-Cor coronagraph is finally back in action on #MaunaLoa - and at the #coronagraphs symposium in Boulder the value of a ground-based instrument was highlighted by Tom Berger: it catches a beginning #CoronalMassEjection almost an hour earlier than all existing coronagraphs in space which have to cover more of the surroundings of the Sun.

Mauna Loa has probably been erupting for at least 700,000 years, and may have emerged above sea level about 400,000 years ago. The oldest-known dated rocks are not older than 200,000 years.

I can't believe there is a possibility of #MaunaLoa Observatory shutting down.
For those who follow climate science closely, this place is iconic. Mauna Loa was the first place where continuous measurements of CO₂ were made. They started in 1958 and have continued to this day.

The rate at which atmospheric CO2 is increasing is now outpacing the pathways set out by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that limit global warming to 1.5C.
The third working group report of the #IPCC’s sixth assessment report (#AR6), published in 2022, presented a set of seven “illustrative pathways” that highlight how different mitigation choices across major economic sectors translate into future #GreenhouseGas #emissions and global temperatures.
In the three most-ambitious pathways, #GlobalWarming has a 50% chance of either staying below 1.5C, or overshooting it by only 0.1C (for up to several decades) before then returning to below 1.5C.
Yet, not only are atmospheric #CO2 concentrations still rising, the rate of rise is #accelerating.
The build-up of CO2 in the #atmosphere has been monitored at the #MaunaLoa observatory in #Hawaii since 1958.
As illustrated by the iconic #KeelingCurve below, the increase has been accelerating over the decades (blue line) due to ongoing emissions of CO2 from burning #FossilFuels and changing land use.
