A Tale of Two Flowers
May 1, 2025
It is May Day, and the daffodils are having their day in the sun as well they should on this festival of spring. Over the years, I have accumulated many different varieties, and I’ve learned to plant both early and late bulbs so that the bloom time is extended. The planting usually happens on a late fall day when I realize that I need to get them into the ground before it freezes solid. So, I scatter bulbs here or there and then promptly forget where I did plant them until they pop up in the spring. I know I could use markers, but they are some of the first green shoots to lift out of the ground. Anyways, it is always exciting to have an unexpected discovery. One needs this in late February and early March when spring is still just a dream.
This year’s new blooms are a late variety with creamy white ruffled petals and a lovely scent thanks to a special order from Johnny’s Selected Seed in Maine. I used to think all daffodils are basically the same until I did a little research and found that there are over 26,000 cultivated varieties. They are all in the amaryllis family (Amaryllidaceae) which also includes alliums like onions and garlic. I guess there is zero chance of collecting them all.
Daffodils are poisonous to deer, and that is why they avoid them. I’ve read that if you plant daffodils around a deer delectable plant, they will keep away from it. It is important to note that they are also poisonous to humans. The leaves, bulb and stem contain the highly toxic chemical lycorine. I have never heard of a daffodil poisoning because who would think about eating one? We have this wise sense about us. It may be part of the sixth sense which tells us: Yes, it is lovely to look at and the smell is divine… but don’t even think of eating it. Ironically, this plant also contains an ingredient which is used in treating Alzheimer’s. Nature seems to have this thing with medicine disguised as a poisonous plant.
The term daffodil is interchangeable with the name Narcissus which brings me to the second part of my tale. Long ago back in grade school, we learned about the Greek god Narcissus. Well, at least some of us did. That was something we skipped right over at St. George School; and yet, somehow, we learned about it anyways. According to Kew Gardens, “The scientific name of the daffodil genus, Narcissus, is believed to come from the Greek myth of Narcissus who fell in love with his reflection in a pool of water. The nodding head of the daffodil is said to symbolize Narcissus gazing at his reflection.”
That’s just weird right. No one in real life would do something like that. But the myth is meant as a cautionary tale that warns us of the danger of thinking too much of oneself. I am realizing lately that there are a few too many narcissists hanging around in high places. I would recommend that they study the ending of Narcissus’ tale where he eventually dies from a heavy dose of self-infatuation. If one doesn’t want to look to the Greek gods for advice then perhaps one of the many thousands of daffodil types can help. There’s the Rip Van Winkle from the Victorian Era or the Original Poet’s variety. There is even a Trumpet daffodil if anyone is interested. There’s just one thing to remember… they are poisonous!

“Did you have any orange juice today?”*…
… if so, it’s less and less likely that it was from Florida.
The canonical articles on the Florida orange juice industry are John McPhee’s two-parter from The New Yorker from the 1960s. But that was then.
Alex Sammon has picked up the baton, with an article on the brutal, unrelenting decline of that business…
Quiet fell over the room, which was neither full nor very loud to begin with, and the 2026 Florida Citrus Show began.
“It should be a great day,” began the event’s first speaker. “Rain should hold off today, even though we definitely need more rain.” No one laughed.
There was no need to say that things were bad. Everyone knew it. The mood wasn’t sour—citrus farmers could handle sour. It was something else. Postapocalyptic. Florida is in the midst of its worst drought in 25 years, but the dry spell actually ranked far down on the list of challenges these bedraggled growers were facing.
In 2003, the mighty Florida orange industry produced 242 million boxes of fruit, with 90 pounds of oranges per box, most of which went on to become orange juice. Now, not even 25 years later, the United States Department of Agriculture was forecasting a pitiful 12 million boxes of oranges, the least in more than 100 years, the worst year since last. A decline of more than 95 percent.
And everyone knew, more or less, that even that figure was not happening. “Twelve million? I would doubt it,” Matt Joyner, CEO of Florida Citrus Mutual, the state’s largest trade group, told me. There was chatter that even 11 million might be out of reach. Could the total end up being less than that, just seven figures? In Florida, the citrus capital of the world, you are today more likely to see the oranges printed on the state’s 18 million license plates than a box of actual fruit.
Rick Dantzler, chief operating officer of the Citrus Research and Development Foundation, took the podium. He was blunt. “It’s been a dumpster fire of a year,” he said.
On the list of immediate problems: the implementation of tariffs and retaliatory tariffs, then the government shutdown, then a stunning, historic freeze, days long, at the end of January and early February, that besieged the fragile orange trees.
And yet those, too, were just footnotes to the even larger problem. Already, Florida had lost about three-quarters of its citrus growers. The last of them, these spent survivors, these hangers-on, had trudged to the Citrus Show to talk about the real problem, which was the disease.
In 2005, Florida first got signs of a new affliction in its groves called citrus greening disease. It also has a Chinese name, Huanglongbing, or HLB, because it came from China, where oranges also came from in the first place.
Citrus greening disease is caused by a bacterial infection that is delivered by the gnawing of the Asian citrus psyllid. (It’s now believed the psyllid first turned up near the Port of Miami in 1998.) The flea-sized psyllid bites the leaves and transmits the disease, which slowly chokes out the tree’s vascular system from the inside, taking years to finally show itself. By the time a tree is displaying symptoms—three to five years, in most cases—it’s too late…
Read on for an explanation of how this catastrophe has materialized and for a consideration of what it means for Central Florida (and the other major supplier, Brazil, which is also suffering).
“Who Killed the Florida Orange?” from @alexsammon.bsky.social in @slate.com.
Other comestible news from Florida: “A deadly bacteria is creeping up the Atlantic Coast. How worried should you be?“

As we contemplate the consequences of climate change and contagion, we might consider an alternative to orange juice on this, National Raisin Day. But while raisins are richly nutricious, they are not so strong on Vitamin C, so we’ll have to keep looking…

One reason this is dangerous is because they weaponize their student group status to invite fascists on campus to speak. They want a showdown that makes universities a freeze peach battleground that draws traveling show fascists to descend on the community. It is a way of both gaining publicity and putting higher ed under fire. #Fascism #HigherEd #Canada https://mastodon.social/@AnnaAnthro/116546620918744042

"I cross over the promenade and that’s when you notice me. You freeze, just staring at me. I don’t look away, walk straight over to you. Excitement rushes through me, sharp with the edge of desire. And I’m desperate to know which version of you is about to meet me."

"The mass drowning of #emperor #penguin chicks as #sea #ice is melted by the #climatecrisis has led the International Union for #Conservation of #Nature (IUCN) to declare the #species officially in danger of #extinction... #globalheating has led to record lows in #Antarctic sea ice since 2016. When sea ice breaks up early, entire colonies can fall into the ocean, leaving the chicks to drown. Even if some penguins escape the water, they are soaked & will freeze to death."

HNL Alert from the Oahu Department of Emergency Management
Issued: 11:05 AM 03-10-2026
Severe Weather Update 1: March 2026 Kona Low Storm
Details
Weather conditions are expected to worsen over Oahu tonight (Tuesday) and continue through the end of the week as a Kona storm impacts the state. A combination of heavy rains, high winds, and the potential for thunderstorms will create dangerous conditions. Heavy rains may cause flooding. Be aware of nearby streams, drainage channels, roads, ditches, and other areas known to flood. High winds can cause downed trees and power outages.
A Flood Watch goes into effect tonight through Saturday.
A Special Weather Statement has been issued for the state highlighting the threat of flooding and concern about severe thunderstorms. The City and County of Honolulu began preparation for the storm and coordination with partner agencies late last week. Mayor Blangiardi has issued an Emergency Proclamation ahead of expected impacts. City crews have been clearing stream mouths and checking for blockages. In anticipation of the storm, there may be schedule changes or closures of City services and facilities. Monitor for updates.
Residents and visitors are urged to use caution when outdoors and to prepare for potential power outages.
Turn around, don’t drown! Do not attempt to walk, swim, or drive through flowing or rising water. Floodwaters can rise rapidly. Just one foot of moving water can sweep away a vehicle. If your vehicle is caught in rapidly moving water, stay inside. If water begins to rise inside the vehicle, get on the roof.
Protect your home: Secure outdoor items so they do not become projectiles in high winds. Clear gutters and drains around your property to help prevent flooding.
Drive carefully: Roads may be blocked or partially closed due to fallen trees, rocks, or debris. Use caution and watch for first responders and crews working in the area. Be aware of officers directing traffic. If a traffic signal is out or malfunctioning, treat the intersection as a four-way stop.
Use extreme caution outdoors. Limit outdoor activities. High winds can cause falling rocks or branches and dangerous ocean conditions. Do not cross flooded streams. Streambeds that appear dry can quickly flood due to rain upstream, even if it is not raining where you are.
Prepare for power outages: Keep back up batteries for flashlights, cell phones, and medical equipment charged and ready. Fill water containers. Turn your refrigerator and freezer to their coldest settings.Stay Informed
Additional updates will be issued as the situation develops or if there are significant changes to the weather forecast. Follow DEM on social media, encourage others to sign up for HNL Alert, and monitor local TV/radio. Help keep lines clear for first responders. Call 911 for emergencies only. Do not call 911 for general information updates.
Learn more about emergency preparedness and how to protect your family at honolulu.gov/dem.
Mahalo and stay safe!
