  1. Gnome 3 (and derivatives) has some great ideas like extensions. Gnome 3 (and derivatives) also has some terrible ideas like breaking extensions if they don't claim compatibility with that version even if they'll work if you just modify the manifest file. That's what happened one time with CinnVIIStarkMenu (it wasn't updated for the newest Cinnamon version) and what fully pushed me away from Cinnamon.

  11. @3morereps I used Ubuntu for a very long time. It is so easy, I am sure if more people would try it they would like it a lot.

Personally, I switched to Linux Mint a few years ago because I didn’t like how Ubuntu installed some packages (for example, Firefox) using their “Snap” service. Other than that, it is a fine choice of Linux distribution.

Another good reason to use Linux Mint is that it is a community-owned operating system, as opposed to Ubuntu which is owned by the Canonical corporation. Even so, Linux Mint basically provides all of the Ubuntu software repository (except no “Snaps,” which is what I prefer). Also their “Cinnamon Desktop” is one of the nicest I have ever used.

  15. After the recent update on my Mint Cinnamon, I'm experiencing some trully annoying freezes in all gui apps at random moments across the system. Not really horrible but quite irritating

  20. Still getting used to Cinnamon as a desktop but already liking it well enough over gnome.

Main selling point - KiCad works properly again.

Completely fed up with all the weirdness wayland is causing. KiCad has a really good, and perfectly reasonable, write-up about why they aren't fixing wayland issues - most aren't in their control, nor are they writing distro specific workarounds as each distro implments different wayland feature sets.

still on fedora, and was planning a clean install for 44 (years and upgraded release cruft building up - most self-inflicted) and know which spin I'm going for

  25. Trying out the Cinnamon desktop with NixOS and I'm pleasantly surprised by how good it is! It's mainly x11 right now, but I can live with that.

One hiccup though, the online accounts tool wouldn't work until I added

    services.gnome.gnome-online-accounts.enable = true;

The official wiki didn't have any notes about needing to do that, so I added them. Now I'm wondering how much of my config could be extrapolated into fixing the docs for the tools I use.

  30. @Andreas_Sturm Ob nun #windows, #macos, #cinnamonDesktop, @gnome, @kde, @xfce oder sonst was... Es sind Buttons, Fenster, Leisten, Text, der dir sagt, was gerade abgeht und Texteingabe-Felder. Du hast einen Cursor und deine Maus / dein Trackpad, deine Tastatur und deinen Bildschirm. It’s the same shit as every day, James! Just use it!

  32. In Linux Mint Cinnamon, by default the notifications will be displayed on the top right side of the screen, which in Notifications setting, there is also an option to toggle show notifications on the bottom side of the screen but still on the right side.

I use a big monitor and I lean closer to the left side of the screen most of the time. I struggle to see notifications if it is displayed on the right side of the screen (either on top right or bottom right), so I would like to request a feature to enable displaying notifications on the left side of the screen.

I have opened a new thread in Github discussion in order to request this as a new feature.

  34. Well, that's the last of the leftover turkey done.

Also, #Linux #Mint is really nice. I guess I'm mostly talking about #CinnamonDesktop right now, but there's a lot of work done in the area of community, graphical tools, and… stuff that's worthy of praise.

Mint has always been about making Linux easier on the front end. I remember trying out their first release almost twenty years ago (fuck, I'm old…). It based on #Kubuntu back then with a KDE 3.x desktop. Basically, it was Kubuntu with non-free media codecs and some extra software out of the box.

    They grow up so fast…

  38. Today's top linux tip: when you have a laptop with an intgrated GPU and an external one, do NOT switch to the integrated GPU in Linux, then, at some point in the future, go to the UEFI and set it to only use the dedicated GPU.

Doing so results in using software rendering, which will upset you for *weeks* because you forgot about changing either of these settings, and 30 instances of "cinnamon --replace" showing up in htop will confuse you.

I thought I ruled out GPU issues because I observed the same behaviour whether I selected "Cinnamon" or "Cinnamon (software rendering)" as my desktop environment.

It would have been nice to have some kind of warning "Hey, you've opted to use hardware rendering but llvmpipe ain't gonna cut it!", but I think I definitely deserve the lioness's share of the blame :)

  43. Just tried out the new Agama installer for OpenSUSE Leap 16, and overall, I’m impressed. The setup process is clean and modern, but I did run into a small bug in the network settings — when connecting to Wi-Fi, the toggle that determines whether the system actually uses that network is broken. Clicking it eventually kicked me out of the session completely.

  47. Why in the hells does #CinnamonDesktop seem to lose the ordering of windows for keyboard-shortcut switching sometimes, or maybe do something else weird with some windows not being eligible for being saved on the stack or something, such that performing the switch gesture multiple times with gaps in between can go A → B → C → B?

  48. No, it’s not a re-post. That’s not KDE Plasma, nor is it GNOME. Hardcase is back on Linux Mint with the Cinnamon desktop, and I daresay he’s better than ever!

No, x11 isn’t as secure as Wayland, but #LinuxMint is faster, simpler, and easier to use on my old 2014 MacBook Air than #Fedora-based #UltramarineLinux. No more nags about a “tainted kernel.”

    P.S. - That’s not Plank. 😉
