  1. LXQt 2.4.0 released

LXQt, the desktop environment which is effectively to KDE what Xfce is to GNOME, has released version 2.4.0. Quite a few changes in this release are further refinements and fixes related to LXQt's adoption of Wayland, but there are also a ton of small fixes, improvements, and small new features that have nothing to do with Wayland at all. There are also a few layout cleanups to make s

  2. Fixing a 20-year-old bug in Enlightenment E16

The editor in chief of this blog was born in 2004. She uses the 1997 window manager, Enlightenment E16, daily. In this article, I describe the process of fixing a show-stopping, rare bug that dates back to 2006 in the codebase. Surprisingly, the issue has roots in a faulty implementation of Newton’s algorithm.

  3. My new #Cosmic desktop environment is making me work in a slightly different way to my norm. More workspace usage in particular. And you know what? It works well and I'm really enjoying it.

Yes there are one or two very minor niggles. I have had to go back to keyboard print screen as the Screenshot app that came with Cosmic isn't working for some reason. As I say, minor stuff. Overall very pleased with Cosmic.

  4. I don't distro hop much these days. For the last 6 years or so I've been on @pop_os_official with it's Gnome DE. Its a system I'm comfortable with. Today I successfully upgraded to @system76 new release, 24.04 LTS with a Cosmic DE. This was a painless upgrade for me.

Have to say, its a very clean and fresh looking desktop environment. I like it. Nowhere near the amount of customization that KDE has, but at first glance its going to suit me well. I prefer things familiar and simple. Thanks to the developers.

Budgie has fallen a bit by the wayside in recent years, but it's still in development and making steady progress. The project's just released Budgie 10.10, the final release in the 10.x series which also marks the end of the transition to Wayland.

  14. Want to Upgrade to Xfce 4.18 on Xubuntu 22.04? Here’s How

Want to upgrade to Xfce 4.18 on Ubuntu 22.04 or 22.10? Packages added to the Xubuntu QA Staging PPA mean you can now do exactly that. Not that you’re supposed to, though 😅. See, while the Xubuntu QA Staging PPA does enable you to upgrade to Xfce 4.18 it’s not a repo meant for regular folks, and usage of it is at users’ own risk. Packages distributed through this PPA have no guarantees or promise of stability, and they may be removed or replaced at any moment, without warning. That said, you can choose to use this PPA to install :sys_more_orange:

  15. Regolith Desktop 2.0 is Out with Various Changes

A brand new version of the Regolith desktop is now available. Regolith desktop 2.0 aims to meet the needs of those who seek a fast and efficient desktop Linux experience controlled (primarily) from the keyboard. Regolith pairs the i3 tiling window manager with GNOME Flashback, and adds in an assortment of other open-source components to deliver a curated, keyboard-driven UX. And are some big changes since the Regolith 1.6 release from last summer. For one, devs have replaced the rofi “launcher” with a new “desktop executor designed specifically for Regolith” called ilia. 16. How to Upgrade to MATE Desktop 1.26 on Ubuntu

Users of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and 21.04 can now upgrade to the recent MATE desktop 1.26 release through a dedicated PPA. The ‘Fresh MATE PPA’ is maintained by Ubuntu MATE developers, and is aimed at existing users of Ubuntu MATE who want to install MATE desktop 1.26 on their systems. However, the PPA (and the packages within) are compatible with all Ubuntu flavours, meaning you can add this PPA to install the MATE desktop experience alongside whichever DEs you use at present (just, be careful). 19. IceWM 3.9.0 released

Another small release for the IceWM window manager - one of the staples of the open source world. IceWM 3.9.0 seems focused mostly on cursor-related changes, as it adds libXcursor as an alternative to XPM cursors. This means IceWM is no longer dependent on libXpm, and gains the benefits that come with Xcursor. There's the usual few bugfixes and translation updates as well.
