I have never been on a cruise ship, but I expect that the attraction is not so much the destination. If you were really anxious to visit the Norwegian fjords as an English pensioner you can easily go there in other ways. Yet few do.
On cruise ships an attractive social setting is created to what public space used to be like before it got destroyed by the dominance of the car.
Just walking around and chatting to people has disappeared but is normal behaviour on a cruise ship. Wandering around aimlessly also. After a while you start to recognise and greet people. There are many options for chance encounters.
There is entertainment with a low threshold available, it is free to participate. All shops, restaurants, pubs and services are on walking distance from your nest.
Travelling by train or airplane is fundamentally different. The initial social code is that you do not disturb others. You are stuck in your assigned seat and can't easily escape if you get stuck in a casual chat with your neighbour. On a cruise ship you can.
